I think bo3s weapon kits were ok, maybe shouldn’t have had fast mags, so that speed cola was the only way to speed up reload, but what’s good is that the only way to get more ammo in game was through pap, but in bo4 you could increase mag through upgrades, but I think laser, optics, grip, stock, and Quickdraw are all nice to be able to have through a grind, but the most important things like damage increase and more ammo could only be earned in the game itself. Just a thought

I think bo1 had the best pack a punch. They heavily experimented with attachments and made the game more fun and unique. They made it so PAPing wasn't just simply a damage and ammo upgrade for a lot of guns

I think BO2 did a good job as well. The Python got a speed loader, the War Machine exploded on impact, and various other weapons had interesting and tangible changes. Though I do agree that BO1 did it best by FAR!!

The whole concept about Pack a Punch fusion is brilliant and the amount of replayability would be endless. Especially if they are also map specific. My biggest complain about the recent zombies games is that nothing is unique anymore. PAP, boss fights, some perks and especially weapons. The way we got to use the same weapons on every map in Bo4 made them more forgetable, compared to a map like Zetsubou for example. Maybe that would be an idea for a future video? - How Zombies lost it's uniqueness? Anyways that was a great video Reed and the whole mainframe series is really amazing. Can't wait for the next one!
@Doughnuts4 жыл бұрын
I'll give my two cents here... You mentioned weapons in Black Ops 3 & 4 are less important due to Alternate Ammo Types being introduced. I will wholeheartedly agree for that in Black Ops 3. It no longer matters what gun you have, rather what AAT you are running. And because you can get Dead Wire or Blast Furnace or Turned on a wall weapon, you can use the worst gun in the game, and still be fun. For example, my most used gun is the Shiva, why? Because I used it to get to round 100 on Ascension with Dead Wire. However... I believe Black Ops 4 did a really great job in trying to alleviate this uniformity. First things first, they nerfed AATs pretty heavily. They aren't as effective, and usually have longer cool-downs to their BO3 counterpart. But that's not a real fix, the real fix, in my opinion, is the new zombie health cap. Zombies no longer become infinitely strong but rather stay at the health they are at around round 40?.. Some people say 30, some say 50, I'm too lazy to look up the real number right now, but that doesn't matter.. anyway! This zombie health cap means that the weapons you choose actually matter in high rounds now! LMGs are now really good for damage and ammo capacity, but suffer from their slow mobility, and SMGs are great for mobility but bad for damage, and so on and so forth. This is a wonderful change in my opinion and fixes the issues we had with the BO3 system. ... but... then they had to go and make the Hellion Salvo infinitely useful and wreck this beautiful balance, and ultimately it just deteriorates any and all high round strategies into "get the hellion salvo and shoot it at the ground"... but... the idea is really well designed, just needs better execution, in my opinion. While I still think PaP'ing your weapons 5 times is stupid, as @Steampunkpuppy pointed out, it seems Treyarch added the golden PaP on Tag almost to say, "Yea, you're right we need to change that." So I think that's encouraging from Treyarch. LOVE talking about Black Ops 4 Zombies, and love this series, keep at it man, do what you love!

i really love the fusion idea and the video in general, great points. i had an idea to maybe rework p-a-p and the attachments system on weapons. what if your weapon attachments are only “attached” or “equipped” upon p-a-p them? you start off with barebones guns, and you p-a-p to get your attachments you selected for that specific weapon, on top of more damage. you still have to level up the weapons via xp, but the only way to have the attachments in game is via p-a-p. thoughts?

This video is why I love this series: a topic you wouldn’t necessarily think about but is flushed out and examined. What a great video Reed. Also, here’s two ideas for the next game to change up pack a punch: 1. Like MW2 multiplayer, just make everything overpowered. When very fun is upgraded, they are all viable to a certain extent, like maybe a starting room weapon (M14 lets say) can kill pretty well up to round 30, but after round 30, you’ll need a box gun (Galil let’s say) that will kill pretty well til round 40. Something like that, it’s just an idea. This gives everyone a reason to try every weapon because they will help you get higher rounds. With this, buying wall weapon ammo should cost more if it’s going to be stronger, and maybe the box even costs more, as well as pack a punch. The only downside is that people could say getting to high rounds is too easy, but maybe they can do other things to make it not so easy. 2. Like tag der totem had the golden pack a punch, have there be two pack a punches in each map. You have the first one, which will help your guns be fine to round 30 let’s say, then you have to do a small quest for the second pack a punch, which will help your guns be more viable until round 40 or so let’s say. So you have an average gun like the MTAR from BO2, it does ok to round 25 typically. In this system, you’d upgrade it like usual from BO2 and other games, but then at round 30, the zombies health takes a jump. You still want to use the MTAR, but it doesn’t kill nearly as well, so you have to do a quest to get the second pack a punch to give the MTAR a boost to do ok in the 30s. This adds replay ability for you to see how each gun behaves on both levels, but doesn’t make them too good. Typically, in BO2 for example, after round 20/25, guns like the Galil or the LMGs or the Scar are relied on, while the Chicom is discarded after round 15/20. This system would let it be so that the Chicom could be used again for rounds 30-33, to help give it more life and use. Essentially, what you’d be doing is taking a gun’s normal behavior and performance on lower rounds and just duplicating it on somewhat higher rounds. Like I said, typically the last round of use for the Chicom is 15-20, so take what it does there and let it do that on round 33, but you have to do a quest for this to be possible. Sorry for rambling but these are just some quick thoughts on different things that could be done.
@bryanbirrueta69024 жыл бұрын
How does a tower defense type of upgrade system sound? Let’s say we pack-a-punched our fun for the first time and got the 100% damage increase from before. Then, we can continuously upgrade different features of the gun (as opposed to attachments). For example, have to choose between more ammo, more damage, or faster fire rate for the next upgrade. Then, the price for that specific path increases so it’ll be harder to keep upgrading. I THINK that’s what I want to see for the upgrade system.
@SSlash4 жыл бұрын
Bryan Birrueta it’s a good idea on paper but how do you handle that within the gameplay? Does a menu get pulled up? Do you hold X or Y for different outcome at the machine? Do you do it before the match starts deciding how a weapon gets upgraded, taking away the freedom to choose on the fly?
@bryanbirrueta69024 жыл бұрын
Superslash yeah, I should’ve made it more clear 😅 I was thinking you would double tap the upgrade button (square or X depending on console) on the pack-a-punch to switch the attribute you want to upgrade. That way you’re playing and deciding what to upgrade as you go.

I think a Bloons Tower Defense type of Upgrade system would work wonders. Each weapon gets a traditional PAP (increased damage, ammo, etc). After this initial PAP, there are two or more different upgrade paths for each weapon that add special effects/attachments to suit different playstyles. Take the Ballistic Knife as an example. One upgrade is suited to melee combat, increasing a player's mobility, and melee speed/damage letting them mow through hordes as fast as they can mash the melee button. Another upgrade suits a medic, the original ballistic knife PAP use intact to revive players, but can also be shot on the floor to have monkey bomb effect (minus the damage). The third upgrade path allows players to set traps for the zombies. The knife can be shot into a zombie for a handful of uses. It can be detonated explosively on its lonesome. If another knife is shot at the floor, it grapples the zombie to the floor, tripping other enemies that walk over it. A second knife can be shot into another player grappling the zombie to them giving them an effect like In Plain Sight. Two zombies with knives in them creates an electric wire that kills zombies that pass through it. (You could grapple two zombies to opposing walls then knife the two of them again to create a stationary wire). Upgrades like these give each weapon a unique use in the mid-late game, and allows for any weapon to be viable due to its ability.

Ultimately the goal of pack a punch would be to tie it into a progression system. For example the higher the prestige you are the better the stats on your PAP gun is. Running into a max prestige player with max PAP gun and a one of a kind camo, that adds an element of notoriety, that makes you want to grind.

I like weapon kits, and would like them to say as long as they aren't damage based(or don't give too much of a damage boost). Let me have better aiming, hip fire, reload speed, mags, etc, but not damage boost(BO4 did it well in the sense that the only damage boost was only applied to heavy enemies(for all weapons besides the Mozu, and Mog, but the fire didn't do much extra damage). I'd like to see PaP evolve more, but I have no idea how.

An idea for pack a punch to be good again is to migrate weapon perks from MW and tie them to pack a punch. Different weapons could have different perks when upgrading and possibly be upgraded again for higher tier weapon perk.. That way attachments can still be tied to player progression and it gives players who survive and incentive to pack their weapons. Examples for weapon perks could be FMJ, Frangible-Wounding/Disabling, Fast Melee and Melee Stun.

Absolutely agree. I was kind of on the fence regarding BO3's Double-Pap (as I and anyone I knew used to call it), because it was decently fun and made any weapon viable. Though ultimately, you are correct on that front about the end result and it'd definitely be better if an array of indiscriminate mods weren't applied, especially ones that greatly outweigh the wonder weapons, all variables considered. Great topic !

Imagine if a Pack-a-Punch would take about a minute, but it will boost the weapon to an Ascended state (or just Max power), it would lead to making a risk-reward choice of powering something up but having less fire power whilst you do. Giving a few weapons even an Exalted (double pap) state, would allow for even more "How much is this worth" estimations. To avoid a cheap loophole of just holding 1 last zombie, you could even put it in an Area 51 like zone where zombies never stop coming. Ofcourse, the upgrade has to be something worth the wait. I think we lost that too. It used to cost time for a good upgrade, now it costs time (or even less time with the right perks) for a minor upgrade. Making upgrading an exciting but risky progress, and you can make the guns feel more unique with new mechanics being added to the gun's behaviour.

In BO1 I would randomly pack-a-punch guns to see how they changed. It was one of my favorite things to do and changed how I played the game. I really appreciate it. Playing BO3, PAP is pretty boring (I don't re-PAP if I get the wrong speacial ammo). All that exploration is moved into pregame menu, and unfortunately I'd have to grind those guns to be able to fully customize it. I miss BO1 PAP.
@sneakyshiekah87804 жыл бұрын
Here’s my idea for a new weapon upgrade system. When you first pack a punch your weapon for 5000 points, you get the “upgraded” variant of that weapon, which consists of a 100% damage increase, bigger gun clips and reserves, higher rate of fire, the usual stuff. But after that, you have the “bizarre” weapon variants. These upgrades cost 3500 points and fundamentally change the weapons. Crazy stuff like a rocket launcher becoming dual wield, a pistol shooting shotgun shells, or a grenade launcher having a random elemental effect when shot. However, since these “bizarre” variants would basically turn the gun into something completely new, it’s optional. You can go up to pap, upgrade your gun, and leave it as it is. Every single bizarre variant of a weapon would be absolutely unique, no two bizarre variants would be the same. I think this would add a lot of replayability as players would go through all the weapons and see how the bizarre variants change every gun.

tbh #1 source of entertainment for me rn. PaP was never an issue in my eyes besides the aforementioned lack of distinction between weapons. I wish they let us in Bo4 select what type of boost we want on specific guns to guarantee it with PaP instead of it being an rng roll especially since some easter egg steps required using certain ones.It also added variety if you were to add maybe Brain Rot to a shutgun to give you a safety net if the zombies get into close range
@CrowAtNight4 жыл бұрын
I'd like to play devil's advocate and argue that BO4 had better PaP upgrades compared to BO3. Now, that's not to say that I think the *system* of PaP in BO4 is better, because I don't like that you have to pack 5 times to max out damage. However, I'd like to argue that BO3 gets a huge pass for the upgrades the Pack-A-Punch gives. For almost all of the weapons, a simple damage buff and ammo increase was applied to the gun, with little to no bonus features applied (a la the weapon now has explosive rounds, becomes automatic, etc.). If you used PaP'd in BO3, you weren't surprised by the changes. Looking at BO4, however, there are some guns that are changed. For example, the Paladin, an extremely powerful sniper, basically becomes a huge joke when PaP'd because it's given explosive rounds. In contrast, the Hitchcock also gets explosive rounds when PaP'd, but is much more viable to use. Players actually had to think before PaP'ing a gun, because a certain gun might be useful for some early rounds, but wouldn't be as useful later (going back to the previous example, the PaP'd Paladin's explosive rounds make headshots less deadly). Furthering this example, these explosive rounds could be very beneficial on certain maps and not so much on others. On Classified, this upgrade is basically a deathwish, but on IX and Ancient Evil which have heavy, tanky mini bosses, this upgrade could prove quite useful. So that's my argument. BO4 PaP required players to consider what to use for a high round strat due to weapon modifications that BO3 PaP didn't have, and I think the game was all the better for it. BO4 brought back PaP weapon variety some, but not fully, kind of like BO1 did.

What I think would be cool is keep leveling weaponry in but keep them per game. Kinda like Ratchet and Clank. Each level would add an attachment then at V5 or V10 it would get a unique upgrade like regen ammo or every 50th shot summons a singularity.

This made me think... What if all Wall Weapons had pre-set attachments when pap'd, meaning that when you upgrade a wall weapon, you know exactly what you'll get every time, while all box weapons have the freedom of choice of attachments, this would allow people who like to grind to shell out the exp necessary for the best non wonder weapon, while allowing those who simply want a predictable and reliable weapon whenever they please to have such.

I would prefer a pack a punch mixed between black ops 1 and 2. Having attachments that are guaranteed and some that can be changed. But this is obviously counter acted by the customization in the menu. I remember in black ops 1 it was "What reticle did you get for your sight?" In black ops 2 it was "Are you going to get the iron sight on the DSR?" In black ops 3 it's "Do I get blast furnace for points or fireworks for that AoE effect?" Pack should be more creative. We need PAP fusion.

I like how BO3 is designed. You can camp for a long time or train indefinitely, you can’t do this and have an exciting game if Wonder Weapons were the key because you’d be invincible. The alternative is taking away camping to prioritize Wonder Weapons which is less replayability to me. High rounds get boring when you’re doing the same strategy regardless of Weapons you’re using, Weapons only provide so much to me. Changing my scenery/tactic does much more for me.

Just a thought from a vet zombies player. Until bo3 you generally wouldn't get attachments on guns before pap and then after you'd recieve the same pap weapon with the same attachments each time . Some people prefer this which is fine but what if in the next game you could still grind attachments for weapons and customize them to how you want like in bo3/4 , the only change being that you only gained attachments after you pap. That would help in game progression and give an incentive to the player to pap. Personally through bo3/4 I never really felt the upgrade from pap was an actual upgrade . Also another thought . People are normally put into 2 categories . EE or high round players . However , some players are only EE players because it is a good way to finish off your game when completing main quest and it feels boring to go hours and hours on a single game to get to a high round . So what if we keep the normal pap like it was in bo1 and upgrade the players weapon significantly but change pap so for a cost players can continuously upgrade the damage of their weapons and each time pap is used the cost will go up . This will put the spark back into getting to high rounds like in the WAW days cause people know they don't have to spend hours and hours to achieve high rounds . Just a couple of thoughts on how to make zombies better in my opinion.
@jdon64844 жыл бұрын
I think what would be a cool idea is to build off AWs system. But instead of just arbitrarily upgrading 20 times for no real reason, have the ability to upgrade over and over again with round limitations. You can get your first pack a punched weapon on round 15 with a certain camo and sound effects. Then on 25 you can upgrade a second time for 15000 points with damage scaling up so you can still kill the zombies but this time have a new camo and sound effect. The points should also scale up pretty high. 5000 points is a lot on round 15 and the cost for upgrading should always feel like something you have to earn and grind for. This wouldn’t be like repacking because it wouldn’t just do infinite damage for 2500 points, and I feel like it would actually be pretty balanced. You could have one final upgrade on round 65 or so and still have high rounds be difficult to obtain with zombies health skyrocketing and your guns not being able to keep up eventually. The rounds and point restrictions could change too, just spitballing ideas.

Great video as always radster! 15:28 That’s really the root cause of all our “problems” with zombies huh? In every single treyarch game zombies has ALWAYS been an afterthought in terms of designing mechanics. Zombies always borrows from the mechanics of multiplayer/campaign but it never creates any brand new mechanics specifically for itself. This only makes me wonder what treyarch could accomplish with zombies if they had full creative control (and a budget to back it up). But unfortunately that dream will never come into fruition, at least not in the foreseeable future.

Another great episode Reed, hadn't thought about it but you are right. The elemental upgrades turned every game into the same. Best point though is about the futuristic guns.. they dont belong in zombies, period. Give me guns from WWII era plz

the essence of what cod zombies always needed, an endlessly increasingly difficult infinite wave based survival game, I love zomboid for this but something that slowly and gradually making the game harder would be perfect, eventually I should expect to be 1 hit down, hope the world record team makes this a new mode, no damage taken record or something, makes training almost feel more like doom than cod. I LOVE IT

For me at least, I hated the implementation of Speed Cola and Double Tap being included in the PaP and not perk stations, it kinda killed everything for me, so now not only can you pack a punch twice and get the effects but now you can double your damage and speed if you spend 20,000 points to PaP 5 times for one gun. If anything I love BO3's PaP and Armory, BO2's Perks and BO1's Maps. Combine them I say they'll make a amazing zombies experience

(I wrote this before watching so I know it was touched upon, but regardless, I feel this idea alone could be touched upon and discussed even further) Here’s a topic I would like to pose: Weapon Kits ruined the individuality of weapons (mostly in bo3) because we all eventually get each weapon to harbor the some attachments and maybe even camo for the most part. It detracted away from the curiosity of wondering what each gun would get on it when coming out of the PaP, and thus the progression of your weapons throughout the game and finding out what you like best, when you can just make pretty much any gun function the same way, especially with double PaPs involved in the mix.

I personally liked bo2’s way of pack a punching the most but I felt like it didn’t go far enough. Getting more attachments and abilities from double pap would add personality to the guns. I also feel like there should be (unless you have already made a video about it) something said about whether or not level upping your weapons should stay in zombies. I myself thought that while it gave you new things to do at the same time it too took away the guns’ personalities and made me avoid new weapons

(edit1 unfortunately only after the game most of us could think on that but...) (edit2 ow my gaw, i just commented the same thing before watching the video huahuaha) ...i think the bestway to keep both things, PAP and Elemental ammo, would be through a complicated EE os similar, giving the weapon exactly what they lost: importance

SOOOOOO happy to see this talked about. PaP has bugged the living crap out of me, cause personally (writing this at the start of the video) I feel PaP have got HORRIBLE compared to its original self.

I was going through some of the mastercrafts I had collected for BO4, and honestly, why don't they have some guns BECOME wonder weapons when they pack-a-punch? Like, the Koshka in BO4 has a mastercraft that is called the 115-Wunder(something) and it looks like a wonder weapon. They could've just imported that model, along with other mastercrafts, into zombies and have given us a wonder-koshka after papping. I feel like this could give weapons more of an identity and change how we view papped weapons and wonder weapons.

Good thoughts my dude! I do sorta miss the personality of some guns (bo1, bo2 examples), but I also like having to grind and upgrade guns and get attachments. Maybe a mixture of both, I dunno! Lol🤣

I'm almost curious how many people would enjoy the idea of still having weapons attachments but lock the attachments on the guns only to after PaP... that way, you still have the gun you want the way you want it, but you can then get the goals of a single PaP instead of what BO4 kinda felt it needed to do with the x5 PaP hits for max effect...

Personally I liked the Pack a Punch in Bo3, granted that was the game I played the most. I do understand that it is flawed though. I never find myself settling for turned or even blast furnace, I always seek out dead wire as the elemental upgrade. I think having a way to upgrade the PaP machine in the map could be one way to solve it. Have a base system that gives you your upgraded gun after putting it in once, and then after an upgrade to the machine, you can get elemental upgrades. But I think the upgrades should be either specific to certain guns or specific to maps. It would create a ton of different elemental types, but could help you choose which guns you wanted because they’d have a specific upgrade that you would want to use. It would help bring back the different identities for the guns too. I would just split it up by class mostly. Give lmgs one type, smgs another, and then because pistols are practically useless, give them upgrades like a mixture between Bo1 and Bo2 with different attachments that can’t be selected from the weapon load outs. There could be any other combination of guns like that in the other categories, but because they are used much more than pistols the different “attachments” probably wouldn’t be as great. I would love to see the ability to get the mustang and sally and then just only have the mustang with a double pack a punch, but it has a new feature that makes up for the lost gun. I feel like the possibilities could ultimately be endless, especially with all of the wonder weapons we’ve seen in the past and the effects they’ve brought to the game. It wouldn’t necessarily bring guns up to the same level as a wonder weapon necessarily, but it could be just under them so that the wonder weapons always seem like more of a must. I know this is a pretty long comment but I like brainstorming new things like this after hearing the ideas and opinions of someone else.

How is dead wire better than blast furnace, blast furnace can kill a whole horde while dead wire cant do it Also turned is good for camping
@railking26654 жыл бұрын
Lambdaxian I don’t find myself camping much so turned never feels like a good option for me. Dead wire is very close to blast furnace on a kill level I think, but what makes it better is that activates more often. Each of the upgrades have a sort of cool down time between each activation, and dead wires is faster than any other upgrade in the game. So even if blast furnace is stronger, I prefer having something that occurs more commonly. Ultimately it’s just personal preference.

I like any good game. But i do enjoy story and grinding.I play w my wife and son on bo4 and i personally love the menu. The co op experience i receive from this game is too great. Blood of the dead story/dialogue. makes my family feel something amazing. And the Rpg mechanics. I feel like they did it right w the gameplay loop. I wish u coulda enjoy it but they disappointed you. I understand . Good video

I know this is a zombiez channel but is it possible to do this kind of video on other games? This critique of games in an intelligent way is really good and I would like to see what Reed can do with other games for this format. If other people want to see this maybe Reed would make them. Also love the retro music. No idea why I love that music style so much.

I say go back to basics. Ditch weapon attachments in the armory other than cosmetic choices like red dots, ditch elemental upgrades, etc. Each gun gets it's own upgrade to make each one unique, only wonder weapons get a traditional PaP. WaW and BO1 dabbled in it but never committed fully to wacky PaP abilities like the Awful Lawton and everyone's favorite 1911 duo. PaP suffered the same issue as perks did in BO4 where Treyarch tried to make them feel like an extension of the player and not an extension of the map since it had essentially become the new Double Tap. I think PaP needed to be more of an ornament for the maps than it was used while also displaying how powerful it can make any weapon. Look at it's original spot in Der Riese, it looks like it *belongs* there. Very few maps really took advantage of it being part of the map personality. How cool would it have been to see the American and Russian versions of the PaP in Five and Ascension? Tranzit actually did something right by making the PaP feel as if it was some broken down, ripped apart, salvaged model that we had to reconstruct, which really added to it's map presence. Also, eating bacon and eggs while watching this.

In relevance to your End Game video, should the elemental pack a punch been a reward for doing the easter egg? or a reward for reaching a certain round?
