Here’s a quick version of one of my favorite tunes “The Groove Merchant” by Jerome Richardson and often associated with the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Big Band. I recorded this tune on my latest album “After Dark” on Cellar Music: chrishazelton.bandcamp.com/al...
By request, this one was filmed from an overhead view. Enjoy!

I have a '62-63 A100 as well, they seem to make the best B3's out there. This song in particular really gives me vibes of someone walking down a street to go to their favorite shop.

There’s a good reason why the Hammond sound is timeless, and this is a great example why. Thank you for such a lovely swinging groove. You’re definitely a master of this instrument.

amazing. I haven't heard such a groove for a long time. I'm tired of monotonous songs and tired beats. I was lucky to find this video. great job!

I use to play this song in my jazz band in college (Thad Jones/Mel Lewis/Jerome Richardson). Great job! Jerome Richardson use to come and 'sit in' with y band back in the 80's when I was just doing bebop. His Mother lived down the street from me in Berkeley, CA and I would see him all the time.

Seriously nice groove Chris! I'm also an organ player and had to start snapping my fingers on the 2 and 4! Not overplayed, very melodic and tasteful, thanks.

I tried the switch on the side of the swell pedal some years ago, but just couldn’t get with it. Half moon on the rail for life!!

I did simple swells on my song. But there was nothing like a full size Leslie blazing behind you.

Nope, all 4 beats. Specific places are accented by actually playing pedal notes too.

Awesome playing Chris! Is that a ‘63 a100 through a 142? Who’s your Ham tech in KC, it’s dialed in! Wax caps, Red Mylar, or aftermarket?
@ChrisHazeltonB3
@ChrisHazeltonB3 4 ай бұрын
This rig was maintained by the late Steve Santee. The A-100 is a 1963 and fairly stock overall with wax caps still. The Leslie is actually a 145 that he swapped in a modded 22H amp for 3-speed operation. I love it! After Steve passed a few years ago, his protege Nate Evans (Revival Audio) took up the mantle, and he does incredible work! He just completely redid my 1969 B-3 and 122. Defoamed the manuals, recapped the AO28 and 122, replaced the crossover network, and a few other things. It is a dream now!

@@ChrisHazeltonB3 The A-100 sounds great with its wax caps intact, every Hammond/leslie combo has such a unique sound, I love those early CV/BV ones too for their unique grit! I’m sure the ‘69 has a brighter tone with those elements rebuilt, the AO28 is often neglected but does soo much taking that tiny millivolt signal from the TG and producing a hot signal…. I love the sound Dick Sims would get on Clapton albums! Such a great player!
@inversemedia

I forgot why they switched to Foam instead of Felt, hard to believe it was a cost savings and oh man what a killer that was, glad you have a patient tech and you invested to saving your ‘69

Why do you have the 1' drawbar pulled out. It doesn't work with the percussion on ?
@ChrisHazeltonB3
@ChrisHazeltonB3 4 ай бұрын
Correct. I just leave it pulled out in case I want that texture (888000008). That way it’s just flicking off the percussion rocker tab, and I’m there!

As a guitarist, I played keyboards, and I got to play a Hammond Oregon on my song called "Playing it Up." You can hear it on my youtube channel by clicking my profile. It was like riding a chopper!
