Something to bear in mind with Japanese horror versus western horror in general: The idea that you can find a way to put a restless ghost to rest does not exist in J-horror the same way it does here. Finding the ghost's unfinished business, seeking justice, burning down the place they haunt -- not a thing, will not fix it. The spirit world is so much bigger than the living world, and once a restless spirit, especially one that's been corrupted by whatever was done to them, decides it wants you, that's it. No escape. You're dead. This was a major point of interest in the early 2000s, which was why American remakes of J-horrors were so popular for a while -- it was super different until it was the only thing Hollywood was making in the horror genre. It's nice to go back now and look at it with fresh eyes now that the market isn't so saturated with it.

Kayako was Obsessed with Peter because he was her son Toshio's teacher and he was nice. She idealized him where as you saw her husband was abusive. And on top of being abusive, when her husband found the diary, he became convinced that she had and an affair with Peter and Toshio was actually his son and thats why he killed both Kayako and Toshio. I actually wish you had watched the uncut version because it showed a bit more in the flashback. The husband was hanging but he was hanging by Kayako's hair. He was her first victim. And the banging was Toshio swinging his legs into the wall. Also, it actually showed that when he broke Kayako's neck Toshio saw it and she was still alive when he stuck her in the attic. Its why she was so angry because she was paralyzed and couldnt save her son from her husband. The sound she makes is her death ratttle from her neck being broken. Itts also why she moves and crawls the way she does.

One thing I like about this movie is that they show you that once you are cursed by going in the house the ghosts can do pretty much anything to you. Invisibly stalk you, manipulate technology, teleport your body. . .anything.. Despite that the primary method the wife and son use is to literally just terrify you to death. I also like that in death the wife and child's ghosts seem to be stronger. While the husband's ghost is just mindlessly consumed by rage and he just physically kills you and doesn't seem to leave the house the wife and son are toying with people until they are at the height of fear and then taking their souls/spirit/life energy to grow stronger.

@Cau_No
@Cau_No Жыл бұрын
@@tonyyul703 Yes it's basically a continuation, as they are made by the same director, but with American actors. I personally even like the original movies more, as they are more effective with less special effects. "Ju-On", "Ringu" and "Dark Water" (by the same author as The Ring) were the main movies of the Japanes Horror hype. There's also a series of movies "The Eye" from China I'd recommend, plus "Silk" from Taiwan.
@robertyeah2259
@robertyeah2259 8 ай бұрын
@@tonyyul703Well, it’s definitely not a continuation of the originals. They are remakes for sure. “The Grudge” is a remake of both “Ju On: The Curse” and “Ju On: The Grudge”. The Curse was a made for television movie that chronicled the story of the teacher who discovered the dead family, and how the curse began to spread to the police, neighbors, and friends and loved ones of anyone who entered the house. There are actually two The Curse movies. The Grudge was the first theatrical Ju On film in Japan, and is a direct sequel to The Curse 1 and 2. The Grudge is more or less a collection of short films that show different interconnected characters in the house at different times. With the main point showing that it’s approaching a contagion level spread, with the film closing on the streets of Japan empty and thousands of missing posters. The American Grudge is a remake of The Curse and The Grudge. The story of the caretaker, the old lady, the old ladies family, and the sister being followed all the way home is from Ju On: The Grudge. But everything about the teacher, the mother’s secret obsession, and how her husband murdered his whole family, plus the story of the police officer who tries to burn the house down, are all from The Curse. The American Grudge just makes some tweaks so that the caretaker is the lead character (the originals really have no lead character) who can discover the mystery of the Saeki family. The original Grudge contained the most iconic scenes but did not contain the necessary backstory, so the American Grudge bridges that gap between the made-for-TV Ju On movies and the theatrical ones. In the directors cut of The American Grudge, you can see the husband hung from the ceiling by the wife’s hair and his legs banging against the wall. That’s a scene from the original The Grudge 2.

It made so much more sense watching it with you guys. Thanks for the reaction. There's so much to unpack in this movie -- but I think the main thing is the corruption of one's psyche/soul/mind that can happen to an individual in this physical world, and how it goes with you (as it's your soul's corruption, not your physical corruption) when you die. Some heavy stuff.

And they're more ghosts of the anger the victims felt as they died rather than ghosts of the victims themselves. It's the reason why it doesn't matter how polite or respectful you are to the ghosts (like how Karen introduced herself to the ghost boy and asked for his name in return). If you make contact with them, they WILL kill you.

Much preferred the original Japanese version, same with The Ring and Tales of two sisters. The way they are filmed, the suspense without major jump scares and gore is very unsettling. But that might b coz I watched them first before the remakes. There’s also a film “Sadako vs Kayako” it’s the woman from the grudge and the woman from the ring. It was directed by the same man that made “the slit mouthed woman” both films are on KZbin to watch. Not masterpieces, but if u like Asian horror, they’re worth watching. If anyone likes disturbing, body horror and Asian horror; I’d recommend “Gozu” one of the weirdest film I’ve ever seen! And “Oldboy” the original is truly one of the best films I’ve ever seen.

There are two franchises I wont watch - The Ring (i have seen 1 a looong time ago) and the Grudge. Regarding the Ring, Im so bloody terrified, I cant even look at moving gifs or pictures of her. I do have the DVDs but they are unopened. I was planning on watchin it last weekend (we had 3 days of rain) but seeing a gif and instant fear talked me outta it. As for the Grudge, I have the movies on DVD and still have not watched them. Why? Because I know the sound she makes. And my sister made that sound in her sleep. I was scared shitless.

You should do the original (Juon) & the original Ring (Ringu). Ringu has Hiroyuki Sanada (Ujio from The Last Samurai - Scorpion from the new Mortal Kombat).

Yes there are original version so The Grudge and The Ring. That's why it's hard to follow the logic at times even in the American remakes.

When I first saw this movie I was in HS but my bedroom was in my parents' attic ( they made me an apartment from my old room and the attic cause the attic stairs were in my old room so they finished the attic and turned it into an apartment to give me more room) it was heated with electric baseboard and every time it turned on it would groan like the grudge. Needless to say I woke up multiole times thinking I was going to die

The American sequel is completely different than the Japanese version. In the Japanese version a reporter is investigating the disappearances from the first movie. She goes into the house and the fun ensues…please watch the Japanese versions. You can find them subtitled.

When I first saw this I wrote it off as a wannabe The Ring, but watching scenes of it now, I probably should give it another chance. The creepiness factor is plenty high.

Saw this one in late 2004 when it first came out. Had no experience at all with Japanese horror films and was thoroughly terrified. I slept with the light on-no blanket haha-for about two weeks. Good memories.

If you are interested in the original Japanese version, I'd recommend do the same to The Ring. The Japanese horror cinematography focuses much more on suspense than jumpscares because of the lower budgets and you guys seem to appreciate that from Halloween and Friday the 13th. There is some sort of cultural dissociation for many people though, since the Japanese movies kind of require you to understand some aspects of Japanese culture. Then again, everyone that watches anime nowadays have _some_ semblance of knowledge of Japanese culture.

In the Japanese version the husband kills the wife and son because he finds out the kid isn’t his. The actress is named Takako Fuji. She’s a contortionist. She did the stair crawl herself. I read an interview where she said they ask her to crawl on the floor like that at parties. 😂

There is a sequel (it has Joan of Arcadia in it), and the Asian version has several sequels. Some better than others. At some point, they almost start getting annoying and frustrating, because there's no way to stop the Grudge from spreading.
