You should've been there in the theater during that final fight. Sherlock had barely narrated any of his mental fights in this movie unlike the first one, but when he started speaking the whole theater cheered. Until Moriarty started speaking too... The last few lines in Watson's book are actually how the novel ends. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle intended that to be the death of Sherlock Holmes, he only created him to inform people of that mental scientific method that he had learned from his mentor. But he grew weary of the character because that wasn't the only thing he wanted to write, he never thought he'd catch on so well while writing he put a lot more passion in didn't. So he gave Holmes a definitive end, sacrificing himself to stop objectively his greatest adversary, and one of the best adversaries in fictional history. But due to public pressure, quite a while after Sherlock's death Doyle resurrected him by having him beat Moriarty in a fistfight on a cliff by the waterfall using Baritsu, a misspelling of Bartitsu. Moriarty fails here because he, being a complete psychopath, doesn't even consider Holmes would sacrifice himself for the greater good, as Moriarty himself only uses his intellect to look out for himself no matter how many others he has to kill. While people think of Sherlock Holmes as just a cold calculating machine, he actually holds his own morality and ethics above his own well-being. The writers did a great job capturing that. More Guy Ritchie. You'd love The Gentlemen and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

An interesting thing about the final “brain-fight”, both Sherlock and Moriarty didn’t anticipate Watson coming outside to them. Which means it wouldn’t have mattered about the first fight, Watson would’ve been there to help Sherlock fight and defeat Moriarty. That’s why Sherlock had that look in his face the moment he saw Watson come through the door. He realized he didn’t have to leap off the balcony with both himself and Moriarty. But it was too late. Thankfully Sherlock still survived. On another note, if you see the expressions on Sherlock’s and Moriarty’s faces as they’re falling you will notice how calm Sherlock is as opposed to Moriarty’s screaming face. It is said that in the moment of danger, if you remain calm you actually have a higher chance of surviving rather than panicking. It’s a subtle hint that explains how Sherlock was able to survive the fall. He managed to find a way out whereas Moriarty was too busy panicking that he probably at that moment didn’t think to look for an escape; thus also referring to Sherlock’s psychological analysis on Moriarty where he said Moriarty is a narcissist and is insane.

@billbill609417 күн бұрын
True but I think it's more that he's super neglectful instead of that he had a really weak plant. Maybe the soil was dry or the plant was in a spot where no sunlight could reach it with the buildings around it, so that it's dead is a clue instead of happenstance. Also weird for a dude who constantly carries a horticulture book to simply not notice a dead plant, only have 1 plant, and not have replaced it.

So, short history of the ending. After writing 2 novels and two collections worth of short stories, Arthur Conan Doyle was tired of Sherlock Holmes, so he wrote The Final Problem. The story introduced Moriarty as a foe equal, if not superior, to Holmes. After dismantling Moriarty's criminal empire 'off-screen,' Holmes led him to Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, where he and Moriarty threw each other over the falls in a final death for the character. Unfortunately for Doyle, the public clamor for more Holmes wouldn't be sated with just another novel (Hound of the Baskervilles), so Doyle eventually brought Holmes back in The Mystery of the Empty House and all the stories that came after. The words you see on Watson's typewriter are actually the last lines of The Final Problem.

When they finally decided to make the movie, COVID hit and the pandemic halted everything again. Both Jude Law and Robert ended up working other movies which further complicated the matter. To my understanding it isn't cancelled, but it isn't a movie we're expected to see anytime soon. There is a general framework for the movie and both Jude and Robert are eager to film again, but the studio isn't ready to make it yet.
