His first Minardi outing was slightly hilarious. His engine failed in free practice so Lavaggi did the sensible thing and parked it on the side of the road (this was the old Hockenheim layout) The car started to burn but Lavaggi took his time getting out of the car. Once he realized it was burning he was really quick to get away. I read about Lavaggi on other sites (which are now defunct unfortunately) and the author stated that Lavaggi was just too late in F1. A few decades earlier and he might have had more success as early F1 also had it's paydrivers (or as they were called then gentleman drivers). Heck i hasve some F1 yearbooks from the early 70's and apparently drivers had to pay to be team leaders or even had the chance to actually race (at least for some teams though teams is a bit misleading as for example Lotus and March sold their cars to different teams which meant you had a lot of their cars on track)

Yea, starting racing at 26 wasn’t a death sentence in F1 until around the 1980s. I think that even though the likes of him and Rosset were bad, the fact they got as far as they did was incredibly impressive. Also that first outing, he must’ve been fire out on track! 😂

I don't mind pay drivers as long as they have the ability to drive the car.Even in F1 today, you still need financial backup regardless your achievement in junior formula.

I am pretty sure, it was him in Hockenheim 1995: he was not aware, there was a dummy grid, and wanted to park the car in his starting position, instead of going further down the road and go to the dummy / show grid ... He eventually was helped by his teammate.
