In regards to the stigmata, my question is *why* was all sacred art incorrect in the nails placement? Wouldn't at least some of these images get it right? I'm not arguing the authenticity of the shroud, and I don't doubt the stigmatists either. But how on earth did literally every artist get it wrong?
@powerlessburger Жыл бұрын
Because the image is more powerful likely. Just like he said. We recognize the wounds in the hands to be the wounds of Christ. Not to mention anyone who doesn't know how crucifixion works (early artists in the church) they might just assume that the nails would be placed in the hands.

I just also remembered that psalm from David about how "they have pierced my hands and numbered all my bones" the second part referring to how while He was distended and torn none of His bones were broken apart, but what about the hand part? "God is love." 1. John 4:16 Love is not only what God is like, Love is who he is. Love only exists in communion, in relationship. Therefore, God by his very essence must be something like a relationship of love. The love between Father and Son. And since God is beyond our human intellect and reason, love can be what Christian theology calls the Third Person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit. One in being/essence, three in person. In our human experience, perfect love seems to manifest itself when we give to others willing the good of the other. It is truly unconditional. Unconditionally giving. And here is God becoming man, living the perfect - sinless - life, taking all punishment upon himself and dying the most dreadful death one can possibly imagine sothat we might be saved. What more could one give - how could one give more unconditionally? Love is who he is. In Thomas Aquinas' words God is 'ipsum esse per se subsistens'. Being itself subsisting. The sheer act of being. God is to be. God is Love. Love, which offers itself by its very nature/essence without diminishing, exists of its own. In other words: It subsists - unconditionally giving. Being itself subsisting. The sheer act of being. Existence itself. This is what we see in the first books of the bible to our salvation in Jesus Christ. From the God who gives by creating, from the burning bush which was not consumed by its flames of self-giving love, to Pentecost: Then, "what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on their heads" - the Holy Spirit. God is love. :)

No one was there, it's all theories based on some archeological evidence of like one crucified victim's remains they found. One historical document said the Romans crucified people in many different ways after the Jewish Revolt. Also victims weren't just nailed, they were sometimes tied. I think Jesus was tied and the nails were added for pain, not to support him.

I still do not quite understand nor accept why the Stigmatists would have their wounds in a different place physically, to The Christ. If they were in the right place, for mine, it would still be adequately noticeable and fully identifiable. It is only a couple of inches away. I have to say that this arouses something of the skeptic in me and doesn't help me in my apologetics with Heretical protestants and atheists whom I encounter. Lord have Mercy
@edwardjones2129 Жыл бұрын
I believe that God gives the stigmatists the wounds in the palm because he's merciful. Wounds in the wrist would be so much more painful, Padre Pio wouldnt have been able to live long with that type of pain. Remember Fr Dalton says that nails through the palms wouldnt have held Jesus for more than a few minutes. The Romans were experts at crucifixion. The wrists were more practical for fastening and a far greater punishment in terms of pain.

I also wonder about that, but I think they will end up showing it in the end. It's essential after all. Same thing with the Last Supper. It's impossible to shy away from the fact that Jesus teaches that eating and drinking the bread and wine is to literally eat and drink of his body and blood. That's why it's a hard saying. That's something they could also end up compromising on due to the general evangelical non-denominational slant. Hopefully though Jonathan's presence influences it.

You can't. And I've read for how many people were crucified and the lack of archeological findings of nailed crucified victims there are, some even think nails were rare and victims were mostly just tied. I sometimes feel like many so-called experts falsely push the idea that Jesus couldn't have been nailed through the palms in order to discredit the Catholic Church and stigmatas. It's so annoying how they will ignore the nails and rope theory all together just because of one archeological finding of a victim that was nailed in the wrists and ankles. Josephus stated that when the Romans crucified a large group of people during the siege of Jerusalem that they crucified victims in all different kinds of ways, sometimes even putting nails through private parts. There wasn't just one format followed for crucifying people.

A lot of nonsense here. First he says the blood flow happened when the nails were withdrawn from the wrists. Later he says the “bifurcated” blood flows on the arms show the two positions taken by a living person on the cross. Which is it? Actually, it makes little difference. The rivulets of blood seen on the shroud could only have been transferred to the cloth if the blood were wet. But Mt 27: 57-60 and Mk 15: 42-46 indicate that considerable time - probably a few hours - would have elapsed between the death and the burial of Jesus. Father Dalton inadvertently supports this by claiming he can see evidence of rigor mortis on the shroud. By this time the blood (even postmortem blood) would surely have dried. And there would have been little postmortem blood in any event. Blood would have pooled in the lower extremities, so there would been little or no bleeding from the head, arms, or torso. Dead people have no blood pressure, so they don’t bleed. Even if we ignore this argument, those neat rivulets of blood on the forearm are pretty much a showstopper for me. If anyone had touched the arms prior to burial, the blood patterns would have been smeared. I don’t see how someone could take Jesus down from the cross, and extract the nails from his hands or wrists, without grasping or even brushing his arms. Furthermore, those “bifurcated“ blood patterns on the arm would have been smeared, since that part of his arm was touching the wood of the cross. Even more unbelievable is the idea of placing him in the shroud - being careful to position his arms so that his inhumanly long fingers would cover his genitals - without touching his arms, and without leaving streaks, smears, and bloody handprints on the shroud. The blood from the “crown of thorns” is another serious problem: precise trickles of blood, not realistically matted into the hair, but clearly painted onto the outside of the hair. For many reasons, including Father Dalton’s use of unfounded innuendo against scientists who get results he doesn’t like (see my comment on the video “The Shroud of Turin is REAL”), I don’t consider him a credible source of information. However, many believers in the antiquity of the Shroud of Turin are able to explain their beliefs with more respect and responsibility than Father Dalton is able to muster. I would be appreciative if any readers can point me toward references that address the issues I describe here.

"...and knowledge shall increase.” Daniel 12:4 I think it would be instructive if the life of Jesus is turned into a series to capture the full effect but in a cartoon accurately rendered and dubbed in Aramaic, Hebrew, greek and latin faithful to the dialogue of the gospels. a cartoon can more accurately recreate all the scenery and context than what can be achieved live. archeology and science have advanced enough to faithfully recreate the events of Jesus life. for example, only in the 20th century did we discover that the narrative of Peter eavesdropping on the mock trial of Jesus at the house of caiaphas, where he stood watching Jesus from the door outside the 31x22 feet hall where the trial was happening. it would be a great catechism tool to show the proper context of the land such as the magi traveling past Beth peor and the roman camp down to shittim and seeing the columns of smoke from the settlements of Jerusalem, Jericho, and Bethlehem, etc.

Keep in mind Christ was whipped and beaten almost to death prior to enduring the cross. For us. The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world: “Yet it was our pain that he bore, our sufferings he endured. We thought of him as stricken, struck down by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, all following our own way. But the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all…It was the Lord’s will to crush him with pain. By making his life as a reparation offering, he shall see his offspring, shall lengthen his days, and the Lord’s will shall be accomplished through him. God became enraged because no animal could be acceptable after God's own Son gave His life to save His people.Jesus is the one and only and final sacrifice acceptable to God The Father. When the Jewish people sinned God would have them dragged off and enslaved. The last time that happened was the Pagan Roman invasions. When God destroyed the temple he had them dragged off all over the world but He let them begin to come back in 1948 because Christianity was being taught all over the globe. There has not been any animal sacrificed by the Jews in over 2000 years .
