Damn, this is much more advanced than the ASHLY lx308 8 channel I thought I was being a genius for getting! Thank you for doing these breakdowns!!! I love seeing what guys like you are up to! As far as dry goes, guess it helps to have two linked DBX 160As, one going directly into the mixer for a touch of dry, the other into chorus for splitting. This is one of the reason why I love (80s) racks, there are so many ways to route to emphasize different effects or tone. Even putting something like the stereo chorus through the fx loop of something like the TC2290 can help to mix the right levels into the tone. Just another way to control the delay/chorus balance. Like your setup, from the mixer I go either into the DAW or into the Torpedo studio, which is the only Torpedo with the balanced stereo in.

I've got one of the fabulous Hughes & Kettner Access preamps (rare!) 100% midi controllable: three preamp channels, an external preamp loop for your Marshall JMP-1, followed by its progammable Graphic EQ, and then three effects loops. In its mono effect loop, put your favorite vibe pedal, in the second loop put a TC-2290, and in the third loop put a stereo reverb unit (I used a Lexicon LXP-1) To control it you need a programmable midi foot-controller. The only thing it lacked was Gilmour's hands and talent !!

Great demo Michael! The opening song sounds really great, stellar playing, relevant examples on possible usage of the unit & cool vibe as usual; that is a very nice illustration a great complement to the user manual. And it's always much fun to see those old classic rack units being used properly!
@Yupppi2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Michael and his rack are back! I'm always surprised by how expensive the stereo line mixers are. I asked a local DIY kit shop if they could have a kit for stereo line mixer, and they told they could but it would make no sense, because it would cost the same or more than the units currently available (like Samson SM10) even though they're hardly available to purchase even. To me it was just like a couple of regular components and wire and a chassis, some buffering and amplifying, but apparently they're more convoluted units (haven't opened mine). But having a good, practical line mixer is a bliss. It's like the power supply for the pedalboard. It's one of those very unsexy, relatively expensive purchases that are core in making everything work and sound good despite not really producing anything themselves. The best part about keeping the dry in the mix to the output is that you sound "less" 80's soundtrack (if that's a good thing to you). Like you get all the percussive, rhythmic punch in your playing like riffs, and they don't become mushy. But you still retain all the beautiful effects and atmosphere around. I guess the best example, ironically from the 80's, is Warren DeMartini. You'd be hardpressed to find a player with more tightness and staccato like, very jumpy and percussive playing style with the emphasis hard on the front of the note, yet at the same time he has that lush spx90 juice around the notes. Now, if you have functionality like remote engaging channels and having send/receive and effects loops in the line mixer, that's when you really get going. You always get in trouble with not having enough parallel loops and ways to arrange them in chain or parallel, even worse if you want to engage one unit at a time in the same place of the chain. That's probably the biggest reason people loved moving into digital simulation realms. Like just doing the whole thing inside MPX-1 is so much easier, you just basically announce what kind of chain you want instead of trying to configure it with cables and stereo mixers. And you still might not have the possibilities of a switcher in the analog system. In digital it's just swapping a patch. The thing I like about units like SM10 is the way you can set your rack so that everything sounds great individually, driving maximum clean signal into the mixer, and then control the volume (the mix of the effect) with the channel level knob. Then you got everything so neat and tidy that any change in the mix is done purely from the mixer. And it's also a great way to have decent range in your power amp as well, having its volume opened up and perhaps if it's a 2x mono power amp, you can balance the chains for different cabinets (like I have a 1x12" wgs version of Celestion 65 and 4x12" marshall with g12t-75) and control the master volume from the output of the mixer. From bedroom to gig without any hassle in balancing things out. It was really difficult to find a place that sells this Red Seven, or a price for it in general. Ended up finding one, $1500. So for a man who already has everything.

Hi Michael, Thank you for the heads up! This is really useful, and you're right, this Red7 is unparalleled! I wonder though if there is any real life practical advantage of the Red7, opposed to a switcher and a line mixer? Can you please explain? I have a switcher and a line mixer. All effects that go series before or after the guitar are switched by the switcher. (Rocktron Patchamte) The output of the switcher goes into the line mixer, that has 2x FX sends (don't need more FX units in practice, though I have more). The effects are added parallel via aux sends, and "turned on and off" by a zero volume program on them. They are always on, but those programs don't give out sound. I just use those programs then to "turn off" the FX I don't need. My mixer has two separate stereo outputs with their own volume control, so I can mix for the stage and for the front of the house separate volumes. Is there anything I miss out with this setup? Can you do something important with the Red7 whir can not be done with my current setup? I am willing to learn and improve, hence the question :) Thank you, Greg.

This is pretty slick. I have about a dozen rack preamps and another bunch of rack effects processors that I want to be able to leave cabled up and ready at all times to have instant access to whatever sounds I may need and still haven’t gotten the switching element sorted quite right. I’m using two voodoo labs gcx units and a ground control and have been trying some line mixers, but I just can’t seem to kill feedback and ground noise. This unit looks promising but it doesn’t have quite the I/O I need. Thanks for bringing this to my attention though!

Ground noise, I feel your pain. I'm about to refit all my rack gear isolated from the rails.🙄
@neonether Жыл бұрын
If you're in a house/apt with shit electricity like mine, it can definitely be a pain. If you haven't isolated it from gear, I recommend a power conditioner to plug everything into. This way you're connected to only 1 power main outlet to reduce loops. From there, I would connect and run 1 effect unit at a time nice and wet with lots of gain from your preamp to detect if there is 1 offender. Hopefully some of those rack units have ground lift to help troubleshoot. Good luck!

Two things: #1 PLEA SE for the effin love of God turn that intro piece into a full song & release it. #2 Michael‘s rack wants a 1210 and a 2290. #3 I‘m garbage at counting #4 Assume you‘ve used a decidedly ancient & increasingly frail Rane SM 26 as your rack line mixer for ages - does the Red 7 hold up sonically? I.e in not colouring your sound _at all_? I have been looking for a backup / replacement for my Ranes for 7? 10? years and haven‘t found a (payable) rack mixer that isn‘t either thinning/fizzying or darkening/dulling the sound. Thx mate & keep up the great work - much appreciated.

Hi Michael, great playing, great production, great piece of gear! Glad your back with all thing rack! I have a similar system and I figured that you can tame some of the noise by putting the IR after the preamp and using the XLR outs on my Cab-M+ to the XLR in on the dbx. Speaking of noise, I‘d live to see a video about your aporoach to noise treatment. Keep up the good work! This is hands down the best YT channel!
@neonether Жыл бұрын
You could, but then you are coloring everything else down the chain instead of letting the chain color the tone and adding an IR that compliments your goal. For example, you want to modulate the hot guitar tone from the amp, not the darkened signal from the cab. Landau actually even used an EQ after the compressor to brighten things up before the chorus for this reason. All the wet fx muddies it up already.

Hi Michael, great video! But why is the dbx compressor put AFTER the preamp and not before? Was it the way to go back in the 80's? Tnx
@neonether Жыл бұрын
The compressor was after the preamp on 80s session racks. One reason so you can slam the sound from the preamp without losing dynamics from technique, e.g. fingerpicking. Downside is you might lose a bit of tone if you over-compress, which is why Landau used EQs after the dbx.

Sounds legit. I am using a Silver Jubilee 2525H, or a nice Plexi build. I am running it into a Freyette PS-2A and a Two Notes Pete Thorn Greenback IR. I use a Belle Epoch Deluxe in the loop for echo and the Sunset Sound plugin for reverbs. I had been thinking about how to add outboard effects to my little Audient interface. Something like this might work I do not get results like you though. You IR tones sound quite real. No matter the IR, mine sound like the engineer put a condom over the SM57 and hung a Covid mask in front of the speaker cone. I must not know what I am doing, rather than it being a case of me needing to spend even more money to get a tone I like.* *That had been my plan A for 25 years or more, but it never seems to work and I still think the tones I got jamming just using pedals and amps in the 80s were better --- e.g., I got on a Randy Rhoads mission trying to learn all his parts and recreate his tones. I got a Sandoval style V made by the guy who made some for Zakk, the Randy pedals and a Marshall 1959RR that blew up in short order. Then I noticed some guy on KZbin get much closer using some kind of Blackstar amp -- his playing may have been better too -- grrr lol. That's when I learned same gear does not always mean same tone. I learned that lesson the very expensive way I may not have fully learned, because I find myself looking at OC81D Tone Bender MKII copies on Reverb thinking it will give me Jimmy Page tone -- who I just found out is my cousin in law when my Dad passed away a few months ago, i.e., my first cousin in Australia who i have never met married Jimmy's cousin, so now I share close blood relatives with Jimmy Page, but I am not cheeky/rude enough to try to make use of my cousin to meet him (I have thought about it though -- who wouldn't).

Flock Audio or Sound Sculpture Switchblade? I mean c'mon...so many other better options. Or if you're just trying to get parallel effects mixing, you have the RJM or the Ground Control mixer...or just any sh*tty little mixer.
