Your a fine player and I like a lot of your videos. But not this one. You obviously have never had tendinitis, which can be quite common with this kind of activity. Older people be wary of this advice. And stretch before playing, always.
@Guitargate
@Guitargate 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have, both in my hands, wrists and feet and knees from running etc. It’s absolutely essential to stretch, listen to your body, and adapt. any athlete that pushes themselves will find themselves facing these challenges if they don’t stretch and take care of themselves. I found the proper shoes and changed my gate to alleviate my running issues, and I’ve had to change my posture, picking angle, guitar strap height etc to deal with my guitar playing issues. For sure - this isn’t for everyone. Just like training for a marathon isn’t. But you can do anything if you want to. For me, pushing physical boundaries gives me the strength to push mental boundaries. And that’s why I train as a lifestyle. It’s why I get up before dawn and run before the kids get up. It’s not for the body. It’s for the mindset of conquering the day. Start with a huge win, then execute one thing after another. Great comment brother. Thanks for this! Also - Remember to always stretch afterwards so your body remembers the stretch!!

@@Guitargate what a well written response to what could be considered somewhat of a rude comment. I wish you did a little more lessons on music theory on your KZbin channel. I know you have the lessons on your site, I just have been a little broke recently. I did ask for a lifetime or yearly subscription from my family on my birthday, but I guess I’m a little old to get gifts like that now. Lol. (27). I have loved watching your reaction vids, and you talk about the EXACT things that I have wanted to learn. The theory... the intervals and number system. I’ve been in a rut and that’d help so much. Even just the occasional theory lesson? But thanks so much regardless! I understand you have to make a living and I want to support that as soon as I can.

I'm not a guitar player, but rather a harmonica player. I've had 8 major throat surgeries the last several years and after every one it required pushing through a lot of discomfort to be able to play again. If its in your soul to want it, you find a way.

Correct posture and hand placement wont cause any tendinitis, which is why professional/classical pianists and guitarists can practice as advised, with tenacity over long periods of time, and never develop any injuries.

I find I need to push myself mentally with improving at guitar. Training my mind not see the underlying major scale as home base when I’m trying to play modes. Being able to recognize the different scale degrees as I’m playing so that I can hit target notes. Things like that.

Hi Michael, while I do think it's a great idea to always push oneself, when it comes to playing guitar especially as we age I think it's also important to keep in mind that if you push too much you could be looking at developing some tendonitis. So it's always important to listen to your body and make sure that soreness is good soreness and not bad soreness. And if it gets too intense take a break.

I've just started the course - at 59 - first time playing guitar. An ex-wrestler who played ultimate for 20 years, my hands are bulky and tight. I can tell that the practice is going to take some getting used to and that there may be some things I'm not able to do... especially as an overworked faculty member with a teenage athlete, but I figure I'm going to learn a ton along the way. Started paying before I realized how long the free sessions are but, then again, I've gotten a lot of joy and learning from the Reacts videos... :-)

I agree with so many things you said in this video. However I want to add one thing that I think you should consider and maybe mention in the future. I grew up playing sports at an elite level and training hard with a sports nut dad who had gyms in our home lol anyway I always had that “work hard, push yourself” mentality. Frankly I’m glad because I was very novice but ended up able to somehow study and pass a music school audition and get through music school. Anyways, in my last semester of college as a music major, practicing hours and hours on end, cramming a 4 year program into 3 years because I auditioned and chose my major way late after two years of college. I was also working on weekends waiting tables so there was no doubt I was over doing it to my body physically and mentally. I just kept pushing and pushing and practicing and practicing. Right before graduation and all my performance exams and recitals, while playing a pit orchestra gig for 24 dollars a night, my hand gave out. My ring and pinky finger of my fretting hand just stopped working and went numb. Ended up seeing a specialist who works on musicians hands recommended by a professor and I developed ulnar neuropathy and carpal tunnel along with tendinitis. In such a short time the over use and abuse is what hurt me. While I agree with your work hard mentality one should mention that some can injure themselves and to take breaks and actually do those stretches and be mindful of this. I can’t work professionally as a musician now because of this and it’s all good but it’s something I battle daily still just so I’m able to play for my own enjoyment. I love your videos and watch them often! Keep doing your thing man your great and I love your stuff. I tell myself I should subscribe and join your crew I just have not got around to it due to busy life getting in the way. Hopefully I can change that soon. Stay well and stay safe brother!

Kenny I thank you so much for this. I had the same thing happen at least 3-4 times in my life during super high frequency periods. Our bodies aren’t machines, but our minds can be. As important as it is to grind the gears, it just as important to oil and calibrate them. In my experience, when I adapt so does my body. Listen. React. Change. But never waiver from the commitments you made to yourself unless you have to.

It’s true. Pushing yourself is the only way. A lot of people see the masters shedding on stage for an hour or more but sometimes forget how many hours of relentless practice it took to get there. Watch Stevie Ray’s face when he’s soloing and bending on 13’s or Eddie Van Halen’s face at the end of his solo of Live Without a Net. He starts the tap slow and then builds up the speed and you can tell he’s really pushing himself to finish the run. You’ll never reach your full potential just going through the motions. Speaking of endurance, you should do a video on a Shawn Lane. He could solo at top speed for hours. The guy was like a robot 🤖

I want to encourage everyone to before powering through, please make sure you learn how to not injure yourself. You don't need to play until it burns, because if you are focusing on technique then you shouldn't have burn anyways unless you're doing hours and hours. Build up to playing for long periods. Athletes don't start training for a marathon by running a marathon the first day. If it hurts, that's your body telling you it needs rest to do that. Look at what's feeling sore, if you're holding tension, and how you can relax into the playing.
