Finally completed! This video traces the contributions of every guitarist who played with Tom throughout his recording - and touring - years.

He sounds like no one else. But it's not merely that voice. It's the whole soundscape he has constructed around his characters, with the help of many outrageously original musicians.
This week I'm digging deep into the history of Tom's recording and touring careers in an attempt to fathom where he found such wonderful, quirky, genre-defying artists with whom to create albums the likes of which we've never heard!
Errata:
The wonderful Duke Robillard joined Tom for the Orphans Tour in 2006. And I'm mortified that I didn't include a mention of the great man!
Mike Knowlton plays the melody heard at the beginning of First Kiss. Source - Mike Knowlton
Brett Gurewitz plays on The Return of Jackie and Judy which was originally recorded for the Ramones tribute album We're a Happy Family. Source - Album liner notes (Thanks Jorge Farah for bringing this to my attention.)
Apparently Dave Alvin actually plays on Sea of Love (Not All the Time, as I had proposed). Source - commenter Richard Haslop - thanks Richard.

Danny! Wow, what an extraordinary video, and not just ‘cause you said nice stuff about me. BEAUTIFUL work on your part! It’s funny - I’ve worked for guitar mags since roughly the Pleistocene, and I’ve interviewed more guitarists and transcribed more of their music than I can remember, so it’s a bit surreal to see myself subjected to the same treatment. When people cover “Goin’ Out West,” (as Queens of the Stone Age did, for example), they usually split the opening figure into two parts, as in your transcription and performance. But, as you note regarding the Arsenio version, I played them simultaneously. (It’s not hard - it falls right under your hand. Plus I almost never use a pick, so that fingerstyle stuff comes naturally.) The distorted part happened to be recorded as a separate take, but you never hear more than one guitar at once, so you can totally play the entire song on a single guitar, clicking on the fuzz as needed. (KIller fuzz tone in your video. BTW!) You quoted me accurately, but I was wrong when I said I plugged straight in an amp, ‘cause obviously I clicked on a fuzz for the heavy parts. But the clean part actually is guitar and amp only.) I loved your comments about Larry Taylor. Besides being a great player, he was a lovely, kind man. I really miss him. Same too with your words about my old pals in Primus. Tom generally hates bass guitar - I’m pretty sure that Les’s performance on Bone Machine is the first time Tom recorded with electric bass. FWIW, Les was my connection to Tom. Believe it or not, Les was a roadie for a band I was in in the ‘80s. I’ll always be thankful that he recommended me to Tom. I learned so much from your video! Now, I’m off to watch it for a second time. Thank you!

Well! This has made my day - nay, YEAR! I'm stupendously flattered that you found time to watch and especially to write this great response! All those guitar mags that I still have, hoarded around my home - and here's the man himself, sharing more glorious insights! You know, when I saw that Arsenio performance I knew instantly you'd recorded it that way. No idea why it didn't occur to me at the time. That's a great insight about Tom's dislike for electric bass. It totally fits, of course. One question - was I on the mark regarding the solos from Lie to Me and 2:19? That's your work, yeah? Thanks again for your generosity here, and for ALL the amazing beauty you have shared with the world through both your playing and your editorial endeavours!

Ribot strikes me as the authentic version of who Tom Waits' artistic character may have as a close friend. in case anyone is interested, Ribot with John Zorn (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooDHc5-IpM6mnZI&ab_channel=MrLiodKiller) and his own trio doing Fat Man's Blues are ridiculous. It's the magic or emphasis, not repetition.

As a metronomically-obsessed drummer, I really appreciated that at times we can hear you tapping your foot as you played something that had A LOT of space in it. Because you were RIGHT ON it. And I've always thought if you can hear an actual metro one or a tapping foot, that you can REALLY visualize how the beat exists in space. Idk, I guess that's obvious, I just thought in this particular instance I could totally see Tom's guitar part just floating out in this 3D image, where I could see how it all lined-up with the beats. I just realized how stoned I am, because what I just wrote is such a stoner thing to say. Sorry guys... I'll just... I'll just go...

Kudos for taking this dive. Tom and His Sideman deserve a doc of their own, in depth -- but you nailed the guitar guys very well. Ribot always sounds like Ribot, Tepper always sounds like Tepper, Richards always sounds like Richards. Why else ask them to play? They all play so distinctively, creatively, and kind of imperfectly perfect. It's hard to sound like yourself. Tom digs that and I dig him for it. Also, Ribot w/ Lounge Lizards For Life YO

Goddamn. I’ve been waiting for this video since the late 80s, when I first heard Franks Wild Years. From there I went backwards through all of Tom’s albums and have remained a fan over the decades. I even got to interview Tom for the release of Mule Variations. But as a guitarist, I could never sort out who was doing what and how they were doing it. A few years ago I spent two months trying to figure out Ribot’s solo on Jockey Full of Bourbon, since everything tabbed on UG seemed wrong. (Which should tell you I’m kind of a crap player.) Anyhow, this is all just to say how impressed and slightly overwhelmed I am at how much work you put into this. Add to that your technical ability, to be able to demonstrate all these riffs so fluidly. And finally just that YOU GET IT! You get the feel. You appreciate the crazy. You celebrate the “wrong” notes. All the things that have made Tom’s music so dear to his fans. So many write him off as a novelty act, but you pull together (or maybe unravel) all the threads that make his music such a tapestry. Thanks, mang. PS. More thanks for dropping the phrase “antipodean” in there. Doesn’t get used enough on the side of the equator. Maybe you’ll give us a Split Enz video in the future!

For what it's worth, I own the Ramones tribute album We're a Happy Family which "The Return of Jackie and Judy" was originally recorded for, and Brett Gurewitz is mentioned in the liner notes as playing guitar on that one.

Back when we were going to WWU Omar used to come over to my place and show me how a guitar should be played. We'd throw everything we could at him and he'd bust it out by ear nearly perfectly repeatedly. Then just to make us look like idiots he'd sit down at the keyboard and do the same. Lotsa natural talent there.

Sorry! You're right, this song is SO beautiful. And it's a wonderful example of Tom's playing. I believe Tom is playing the main guitar part that begins the song and is in the left speaker. It sounds like his guitar tone and is played with fingers. Whilst Shep Cooke plays the thinner sounding steel string acoustic guitar heard in the right channel after the first verse. It's a bit more decorative and played with a pick.
