How is it slavery they are providing for their families making more money than they could ever hope to at home in Nepal. Nobody forces these young men to to join the British army they do it to provide a better life for their families and to continue the tradition of serving the British empire. I have a profound respect for these soldiers and their military achievements over the past 200 years.

LeCrazyCanuckEh The one thing it is not is slavery. There is huge mutual respect now and historically between the British and the Gurkhas, hence the symbiosis. This is a partnership that has stood the test of time, not someone standing on someone's neck, the British value these guys and the Gurkhas aspire to live up to their corps d'esprit within the British army, that they earnt through treaty not conquest.

They get paid exactly the same rates as their British counterparts for doing the same role and have done so for some time. Admittedly it took it's time, but the world turns and since the mid 90's their pay rates have corresponded to normal army rates of pay accordingly. They are valued both by we who have worked with them, and finally monetarily by the government who hires them. This is an old documentary (at least 20 years old), you can tell by some of the uniforms being worn by those being interviewed and by much of the equipment being used. Even during the documentary at 19:55 onwards it mentions that Hong Kong will not be united with China until 1997; that is a bit of a clue wouldn't you say that much of the information that is within the documentary simply isn't current and hasn't been accurate for some time. I suggest not relying on youtube videos as the be all and end all of your education or research.
