Lenny lost many fights. He was simply a big man who learned the basics of boxing. Back then it was one known tough guy against another. When you actually speak to people who were close to these guys like Frank Warren you really understand that Lenny and Roy were nothing more than a couple of fellas you’d see with a reputation in your local pub for being able to handle themselves. That’s it! The way people have blown their reputations up is laughable.
@ifiwas1952 жыл бұрын
@Darth Pepe you’ve gone off on a tangent about professional boxing and wrestling, two things I don’t watch simply because one is corrupt and the other is fake. I imagine both of them would have done well in wrestling because neither of them would have made it as pro boxers. Lenny and Roy were tough men, I have no doubt of that. They were men who didn’t give a shit in certain situations but they did care about who they faced on the street, and don’t believe they were anything more than pub brawlers. Lenny wasn’t a professional fighter in any way. That was proven when he went in the ring with professional fighters and got hammered. Cliff fields knocked him out twice, he got KO’d by George “pappy” Langley, lost to Shaw and it’s well known he refused fights with Bartley Gorman and Lew Yates. I could reel off more names that beat Lenny but what’s the point. I actually think Lenny would have beaten Gorman simply through size alone. He was double the size of him but Lew Yates would have destroyed Lenny. Lew was a professional standard heavyweight, McLean wasn’t. And let’s not forget Jonny Waldron who smashed Lenny to bits twice. Their reputations got blown right out of proportion in the 70’s because of the London gangster scene at that time. The Krays had put that scene into the celebrity limelight in the 60’s and everyone grasped it with both hands. Joey Pile saw a way of making serious money by staging fights (something the travelling community had been doing for years) and the public lapped it up. The 70,s and 80’s were ablaze with stories of bare knuckle fights in every town and city in the country but two names kept cropping up simply because it was London. I even saw people comparing Lenny to Mike Tyson and asking the question “A prime Lenny vs a prime Tyson 🤦🏻♂️😂😂😂 how delusional people can get. McLean and Shaw were nothing more than two debt collecting hard men who were made out to be supermen. Who would have gone unheard of if it wasn’t for Joey Pile and his money making schemes and the public blowing their reputations right out of proportion.

Lenny was supposed to fight Paul Sykes but Paul got injured which was lucky for Lenny. They replaced Sykes with a middleweight who went on to give Lenny a hiding. If he had of faced Paul Sykes he would of been smashed to pieces. Paul Sykes was a genuine heavyweight who could have a fight. Certainly better than any fighter Lenny McLean had ever fought. Frank could never have got a start in boxing promotion without big Lenny backing him - The promoters of the time wouldnt have allowed him a look in - Frank is now sucking up to the Furys, he never calls anyone a bully until they have died - He never calls John Fury a bully despite him hitting the smallest man at a recent press conference and trying to bully and intimidate everyone around him - but met his match with Lennies mate Micky Theo who put it on him and he didnt want to know - Ask Frank about that one in the next interview

From all the various stories I've heard about Lenny, it seems a bit of both. I've seen that he was a bully in the sense that he picked on people who he knew couldn't do anything to him or when it came to fighting, he was matched against guys who he knew he could beat or were fixed to lay down for him. As soon as he was in a real fight with someone who had balls and ability (Cliff Field, Johnny Waldron and a few others), he was laid out. But then people like Nosher Powell (who I always respected) said that Lenny was a stand-up guy who was always there for him if he needed whatever. So if you were his mate, he'd do anything for you. Frank probably allowed himself to be bullied and that's why he's still prickly about someone who's been gone for 21 years.
@stevenspenadel51083 жыл бұрын
The fights he lost were proper boxing matches. Not underground
@TheTruth-pl3mk3 жыл бұрын
@@stevenspenadel5108 No, the fights he lost were unlicensed. They were in a boxing ring under those rules, but were not sanctioned. I'm not counting any that he may have lost "on the cobbles", only in the unlicensed ring.
@TheTruth-pl3mk3 жыл бұрын
@whybother now You have a choice. It's f*cking tough, but eventually (it might take days or it could last a decade) a person decides they've had enough. You either fight back or you leave and report the perpetrator to the necessary authority (whoever that may be). Anything else?

Problem with Lenny Mclean is the same problem with all of these world class bare knuckle fighters - Authenticity. There is no record other than word of mouth from the people close to the guys who do it about how good they were (which in itself is always a risk for exaggeration), and secondly theres the principle: If they were that good at fighting, they would have been hired by someone who had alot more money than their unlicensed promoter to box for them. Lenny Mclean was likely a tough guy amongst non-fighting men. I resent people like this, as they have social capital by playing in an unequal arena. Had he dedicated his life to fighting, tested himself, fell short, got back on the horse, fell short again, got back on the horse and finally reached a level in fighting worth respecting then I'd respect the man. But he never did that... All the professional fighters that do make something of themselves go through this process. Lenny was an urban legend. There is a reason he never even tried to achieve anything in the true fighters realm. A tough man amongst men with no intention of being known as tough...

It must be impossible not to be called a bully when your beating the shit out of people on the regular, some probly didn't deserve it but same when a lion kills a cute antelope , life has casualties, you better just get the F out of there when there's a lion on the prowl
