The Guv closed at 7AM this final night; the quiet of the rising sun was deafening. For this final set I was, where I was usually found, with my group of weekly residents, at the East corner of the stage next to, and often on top of, the speakers, near the bar and close to the smoking patio. Many, many good times and every one of them still a brilliant memory. Many good friends whom I miss - I hope you're all still in love with life, music and dance. I took a piece of The Guvernment with me. I fell in love with my girl at the Guv and we're still dancing to this day. Luv ya Maggs! #LuvTheGuv

Nightclubs and other cool venues provide and make up the culture and the amazing vibe of an area, it's what gives the area its soul, once you tear it down and build condos there, you lose everything that made the area amazing, it's fukin sad, condo culture is BS !!!!

@@joshmdmd Indeed they did! The new/replacement Guv is crap. Looks nicer n' all, but they put VIP tables in the middle of the main dance floor breaking up the synergy of the joint.

@@alextorontoHey there Alex. Cool story for you. While Mark Oliver cemented his already amazing reputation as the resident DJ at the Guv, he was not the first DJ to play the club. I was. Please allow me explain. Mark was the DJ for opening night, a Friday he would do for many years. But.... The club was actually opened to the public on the Thursday night. Charles K had a friend called Agnes Pec, a clothing designer who had a store in Yorkville where they both had interests, called Gotterdammerung. I was and am fortunate enough to be the brother of her Shopgirl and Muse at the time, my sister Nicola. Agnes asked my sis if she knew any DJ's. As DJ's had recently become in Vogue at fashion events. She suggested me as I was a Rave DJ and club kid myself. And so I proceeded to play this amazing club on the Thursday before opening night to a crowd of mostly fashionistas, press and models. Full light show and sound system as Charles was eager to see what the end result who look like. So how did it go? Incredible! To this day, It's still the biggest nightclub I've ever played. The biggest nightclub in Canada, period. Sure, I played some bigger raves but it remains a special memorable moment for me. I remember being part totally ecstatic and absolutely terrified at the same time. I've have countless memories of those times and believe it or not, the stories continue. The very first time I was billed as a "professional DJ" I was the DJ to perform before my idol, Richie Hawtin in Hamilton at a rave called 13 Network put on by my club/raver friends Jody and Laura. Richie, not satisfied with the sound system, left after just a few tracks. Someone, summoned me from the chill out lounge to inform me that I had about 5 minutes to get on stage. How did that go? Amazing... right until some deadhead decided to jump on top of the turntables. During a rather good mix of early white label Rabbit in the Moon, Sarah McLaughlin (which I got got from my old friend Don Berns, Dr Trance) and UR Detroit techno. I shoved the guy off, as you do and continued. People told me I was the best DJ on the night. Obviously, I only ever got that compliment because Richie didn't finish his set.... But what a memory. I feel absolutely blessed to have been apart of this time. And don't regret a moment of it. The irony being, I live a stones throw away from a kid that once saw me play back in those days. He's worth tens of millions, number 1 Producer/DJ in the world... Joel, if you're out there, I get it. I love you too pal. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to everyone. Michael.
