Is hockey just curling but someone forgot the rules of curling, trying to almond, and now there's people who don't realize the iron thing is supposed to be bigger, there was never supposed to be nets around the concentric circles, and the brooms were so messed up that they thought sticks are what they use??? And it was taken as an opportunity to haze the youngins by slamming them into walls, since no one knew why they were doing anything in curling between 1669 and 1720?

If I have to guess - the swiping is for the ice to melt a bit from the pressure and movement so the rock have wet path to move on to.
@fnors2Ай бұрын
Dunno if it's about getting water or not. But it's definitely about making the ice smoother so there's less friction for the rock to slide on. And then there's that crazy part of it where you sweep one side more to make the rock curve
@amvsoftomorrows8696Ай бұрын
i adore this lol.
@SuperCommando60Ай бұрын
biblically accurate
@3gouАй бұрын
Why do you need to sweep to make the ball go farther? Does the ice have trash blocking the way? It’s never explained how this is supposed to help something go further.
@terminator6950Ай бұрын
@3gou it depends on how hard you throw the curling rock. The rock in curling can weigh up to 44 pounds (19 kilograms), and the lightest is roughly 38 pounds (last time I looked it up). So sweeping reduces the amount of friction the rock has, thus making it travel farther. Just because something is travelling along ice, doesn’t always mean it’s going to go far. I know, it may seem complicated. Because, as a Canadian, I know that rarely anyone takes curling as seriously as we do up here
@ameliegonissen7154Ай бұрын
I’m not fully sure because water (and ice) physics are actually extremely complicated so I might be full of shit but my best guess is that they’re not removing trash. By swiping very fast they create a very thin layer of water. Water+ice makes a very very slippery surface, like when ice cubes start to melt they’re much harder to grab than fresh out of the freezer.
@terminator6950Ай бұрын
@@ameliegonissen7154 Unfortunately, thats not how it works. The ice is designed for the curling rock to glide along it. If you were to throw a curling rock on the ice of a hockey rink, since the hockey rink is flat, there'd be too much friction. The ice on a curling rink is specifically designed so that there's less friction when the rock is thrown.
@ameliegonissen7154Ай бұрын
@@terminator6950 quick google search actually says I’m right: “The basic principle behind sweeping is deceptively simple. The heat produced by the friction generated by sweeping melts the ice and produces a thin layer of water over which the heavy granite stone slides more easily since the friction between the stone and water is less than that between the stone and ice.” This comes from the McGill university website, which seems at first glance to be a reliable source of information (it’s a legit university with a good ranking worldwide from what I can find)
