Here is the secret a little more in depth: You must be the one in your group that is seen as the one to be the "best choice" for the cast member. I E The one who will respond with the highest return of happiness/ surprise/ reaction for the rest of the group. For example a little boy, an elderly woman, the shy guy of the group, the social butterfly, or similar. It will likely never open for the strongest person / toughest looking person. Someone reminiscent to king Arthur as a child is a good candidate for example. Ideally a little girl.

We went there and my son, who had just turned four was running up in excitement to try. He had tripped on his way over and ended up busting his nose, bleeding pretty bad. I'm a single father and I'm with my family on this trip, but at this moment we are alone. I try to get out wipes as he is crying to wipe the blood off, but he is just screaming telling me "no, dad, no" I'm confused why he wouldn't let me help him so I look at him, and he is crying but his eyes were still on the sword. So I helped him up, picked him up, and he pushed me and made me put him down. He went on to lift the sword without any struggle, with blood dripping down his face, still tears in his eyes. It's not his prettiest moment, and I bet he will look back and think about how ugly he looked in the photo, but I'm so happy they triggered it for him in that moment. Dude was already having a bad time and they made it 100% better. To this day it's still a story he repeats all the time. It wasn't that long ago, almost a year ago since this happened, but everytime he goes to his mom's house, he goes on to say how he "got a bloody nose and lifted the stone sword yesterday." Even though it hasn't been yesterday in many months.

New guy who went to Disney once. Apparently they were doing the whole sword in the Stone thing, and he was selected from the crowd to try to pull the sword. He walked up, placed his hand on the hilt, and did nothing. He then removed his hand, nodded to the sword, and went to walk off before one of the stage hands asked why he didn't want to pull the sword? He simply stated he wasn't worthy. He said he may have been a good father, and may have been a good soldier when he was served in the military, but that doesn't make him worthy to wield such a legendary weapon. About a month later, long after their vacation, I guess one of the higher-ups found out where he lived and mailed him a replica of Excalibur. Badass.

Years ago, Merlin would come out and do a short show and choose someone from the audience. That person would lift the sword and then get a very nice scroll certificate and a heavy medal with a beautiful purple ribbon to wear and keep. My oldest son was chosen and it was amazing. We go about twice a year and have not seen them doing it in over 10 years or so.

Easy to do, not so braindead and easy to master. It's marketing. If done right you improve the visibility of the park and the attraction. Though that's hard to measure considering it's Disney and already heavily marketed. For a smaller venue, this same technique could have a HUGE impact.

as a kid in the 80s I was chosen and pulled it and as an adult the "man who couldn't pull it". this was back when they crowned you the king of a silly time period of day the show is happening (I was king of tea time). they'd put a crown on you, a scepter in your hand and a red velvet and faux mink robe on you and take a polaroid of you with merlin add it to a certificate that merlin signed, take the gear back and send you back to your parents. I still have the certificate and picture. As an adult selected (especially a large man), it wont budge then merlin messes with you throughout the show (all in good fun).

My plan would be to use one of those flipper zero devices that copy radio frequencies and see if I can get close enough to the person who controls the sword to try and copy it. From there, program a remote button that operates on the same frequency and bam, sword out of the stone anytime I want. I know there is a lot of stuff that I may not know about/could go wrong, but one step at a time here.

The sword is actually controlled by Audio Central. There are two security cameras. One is in the flowers looking directly at you and you do not even realize it. The other is behind you under the canopy of the carousel. The latch in the stone is controlled by Audio Central. Providing that not only a cast member picks you, but also a cast member in audio Central is watching the cameras, the cast member just has to give an up hand signal to the camera. Be aware the Sword is spring loaded and will become heavier when you pull it out of the Stone. This one's originally a hydraulic animatronic trick semi installed by Walt Disney himself. Is now, since then, controlled by Servo lock motor. If all is silent around the stone when the sword is being unlocked, you can actually hear the motor much like the power door locks on your car.
