Thanks for explaining the Hakkas. I renewed my fascination with the Hakkas. I’m am born and raised in New York City. My father is from Hubei and my mother is 100% Cantonese Hakka but born and raised in Tsingtao in Shantung. I don’t know much about my father’s people but while I never learned how to speak Hakka but am heavily influenced by my mother’s Hakka heritage. Experiencing my mother’s bravery, hardworking, and kindness, I am proud to be half Hakka.

I'm hakka origin. My dad left Kwantung, Shantou via Dabu Meixian in the 1930ish landed in Singapore then Malacca (Malaysia). I'm longing to visit my dad's home town in Fuzaitang one day and make a video of the past history. There wasn't any civil war between the hakka and cantonese people during that time that led the Qing gov to intervene. It was the religious (christianity) uprising called the Taiping Rebellion against the Qing Dynasty with the help of some foreign power in 1950-1964 (14 years war) over land distribution issue. The Qing gov were better equipped and also with the support of some foreign power on their side to defeat the Hakka led forces. Your video some how interesting as I recalled how my dad told us his story when he first landed in Nanyang at the age of just 14 with my uncle. almost everyone that left for overseas were of Hakka origin but some had already adopted cantonese, hokkien culture and their dialects as they lost their own culture. The Punti people (Kwangtung and Fujian people don't leave their prevaleged lands).

For the civil war between Hakka and Cantonese, please refer to the book 被遗忘的战争 The Hakka-Punti War in Guangdong 1854-1867, written by 刘平,professor from Fudan University. I do not agree with every detail in the book, but it's a good starting point to know this history. As to the Taiping Rebellion, I agree it was also a major factor that caused the chaos in Meizhou and many Hakka leaving home.

Cantonese also practice double burial for many centuries. There was no conflict between Hakka and Cantonese people in Zengcheng County east of Guangzhou. They got on well and today half of the population of Zengcheng are Hakka. Because of this Zengcheng was one of the most prosperous of the migration areas of the PRD and sent far fewer people overseas. Many Zengcheng Hakka migrated to Malaya. You can learn a lot of the history of Cantonese by studying the Hakka.
