When my mom was in rehab, Bernie Parent came to the rehab facility to do a talk. My mom knows I’m a big Flyers fan and she told me her and Bernie sat down and just talked about life for an hour. Of course, the eternal ladies man, he told her she was beautiful, etc but they also had an incredible conversation that really helped her turn herself around when she was in rehab. She got me a signed poster of him that I still have hanging in my room. Bernie Parent isn’t just an amazing hockey player, but an amazing human being. He still goes around to other rehabs and does events for them. He is truly an inspiration to me.

4:10 "But Harold Ballard" that could have been used many times when Ballard ruled and ruined the Leafs. His curse still holds high today. Sadly his name is etched on the Stanley Cup and many great Leaf's never got that.

Will go down in history. As the Flyers last Stanley Cup winning goalie.

Parent was just incredible in ‘74 and ‘75. What makes him even more impressive is that he was probably making big saves during a lot of shorthanded situations given the Flyers’ rough style of play.

You are so right. I remember that the Flyers played shorthanded regularly, and opposing teams still struggled to score a goal on Bernie Parent.

Bernie Parent was a beast, one of my favorite goaltenders! Really incredible in his time! He always gave a lot of credit to Jacques Plante in helping his game out! This was a great Podcast,I really enjoyed it!

To clarify the 1975-76 season when Bernie would have a shot at three straight Cups/Conn Smythes - Bernie was injured in a 1975 pre-season practice. It was a pinched nerve in his neck (not an eye injury) and then he had surgery on his neck/back and returned to action for his first game of the 75/76 season on February 24, 1976. He started the 1976 Playoffs for the Flyers and played the first 8 games, before complaining of "tiredness" and said it would be best for the Flyers to go with Wayne Stephenson, who had a great season in relief. Stephenson won all four games against the Bruins (after Parent lost Game 1) to advance to the Cup and Fred Shero went with Stephenson in all four games in the '76 Final against Montreal. Bernie was on the bench and can be seen in the handshake after the sweep against the Canadiens.

The story at the time was that Parent's wife, who was from Philadelphia, didn't want to live in Toronto, so Bernie jumped to the WHA and wouldn't come back to the NHL unless it was with the Flyers. That was the story or rumor or whatever you want to call it, whether it was true or not, I don't know. My favorite Parent moment actually was when he was on the Leafs. In a playoff game against the Rangers, there was a huge brawl and Bernie got involved. Vic Hadfield tore off his mask and threw it into the MSG crowd and of course they weren't giving it back. They sent in the police to look for it, but good luck finding it amongst 17,500 Ranger fans. So Jacques Plante had to come in and finish the game. On boy, 1970's hockey was the best!

I always was sad how his career ended. Yes, he was a big reason why my Sabres lost in the finals in 75.. funny how both netminders careers would end due to eye injuries... one reason that Edwards/Suave were loved as much is they used the helmet/cage mask that would fully have prevented Dejardins injury (and Bernies too)... Quite a few really good ones back in the 70's with Dryden, Cheevers, Parent and a few others that really shone.

I hated Philly back then, but if Parent hadn't gotten hurt I genuinely feel he'd be in the conversation with Roy and Hasek as the GOAT. And Philadelphia might have been a dynasty. He was that good.

Should have mentioned that Parent initially signed with the Miami Screaming Eagles and was actually the first NHL player to have jumped to the WHA. Other then that great video

Only heard of him through my parents, I thought his career looked short on my cousins' hockey cards I never knew why, there we go thanks. That sucks, us Habs fans almost had the same thing happen to Saku Koivu, not enough that he had cancer and miss 80 out of 82 games (bought himself a medical device for the hospital in Montreal that didn't have it as a donation 👍❤. Then in that ugly first round against Carolina once again in 06 Eric Staal almost blinded him in one eye, no penalty. I remember how furious everyone was, it's kind of a forgotten incident because it didn't end up destroying his career, but it did take him out of the playoffs and he was doing real good too and then after his injury it started to slide into Carolina's favor, so much so they won themselves a cup that year. I was real glad our #1 centre's career wasn't over and I didn't want the guy to leave after his last season with us. On another note, Philly have notorious issues keeping their great goalies, Parent's eye, Hextall's injuries and inconsistency after his amazing first season in his first stint, Pelle Lindberg's death on his rookie season, whoever they had when I refused to switch to the Habs after the Nords were moved (my childhood friend I met back in my first year of college got me into watching Habs games....he was bringing free beer so sure why not, it was when Koivu was out due to cancer, came back, and the Habs upset the Bruins and were leading 2-0 in the second round against Carolina, where Theodore was so amazing he won the MVP even if the team didn't even get to the Stanley Cup - when our best scorer was Oleg Petrov with just 22 goals in the season, Koivu coming back with 2 games left in the season, fully healed, all of those factors brought me back in),Hextall was back and doing alright to great but retired early due to injuries, then I remember their guy then was Cechmanek and he gave such a horrible goal on a faceoff in Philly's zone to Ottawa, losing second round I think, after 2-3 seasons and the lockout, he didn't come back. Then I remember it was the very average Robert Esche for a while, same with Brian Boucher who had a few good runs but was easily injured, I think they had Sean Burke near the end of his career too and he wasn't very good then the same kind of grind happened until Hart showed up, being a great hope and then what happened...well, what might've happened, happened and even if he's innocent he was abandoned by Philly and they were dealing with AHL level goalies or guys not ready yet all of a sudden, Ersson, Soderstrom(?). The day Philly gets a solid goalie, they will get a cup again, they couldn't have done it with Leighton in 2010, they very often make the playoffs but their weak spot is almost always in between the posts. It's been a long stretch of bad luck since Bernie Parent had to retire early I have to say and I kinda feel bad a bit even if Philly, like Boston and Toronto are classic Habs enemies.

Flyers probably could have won another Cup had Pelle Lindbergh not died in a car accident...Man, they still have a goalie curse going. The Flyers are 0-6 in the Stanley Cup Final after winning it their first 2 chances. Carter Hart was thought to be the Flyers long time starter and maybe part of a Cup team, but that 5 on 1 girl incident probably ruined his career!
