About a week ago, on April the 4th the legendary Elmer Bernstein would have turned 100 years old. To celebrate that anniversary, we will take a listen to one of his best-known scores and one of the finest achievements of his collaboration with director John Sturges: "The Hallelujah Trail", from its release in 1965 to this day remains a fun western comedy with a great cast, such as the splendid leads by Burt Lancaster and Lee Remik and funny figures like Donald Pleasance as Oracle Jones. The movie is sheer fun, yet made with great love to detail. Same can be said about Bernstein's score. While it is comedic at parts and never too serious, we get themes and motifs for the great plains that are as honest as can be. While the original recordings (as heard in the movie) got irreparably damaged during the Northridge earthquake in 1994, the only cue that could be rescued was “The Bath”. The rest of the music you are hearing is Bernstein’s material as recorded for the commercial release at the time. While those recordings capture everything important, the film recordings had a lot more to offer (you would confirm watching the movie with an ear on the score), but that’s how it is, right? Thank you for everything, Elmer!

A favorite Western...Lee Remick is a "fine figure of a woman", and most memorable to me in this pic...As for whisky, I like the smokey, peaty Scottish kind

Hallo Fred.

Buona Pasqua a tutti!🥚😉 Happy Easter!🥚🐰

Thanks Fred. This one is a lot of fun. I read somewhere that Bernstein had DATs of a lot of his scores. Should this be true, are these the rereleases or something else entirely? Either way, lots of fun!

Hey Morlock, it's surely an interesting point you mentioned there with the private copies. However, I am sure that people went through them. Otherwise it would be rather strange that the world is talking about them to be lost forever, while they are lying on "Bernstein's desk" at home. Just too obvious. But who knows. Fingers crossed that there is something still out there! :-)
