About 10 years ago I was at a Flyers game in a corporate box. Dave Schultz and Bernie Parent came in. I ended up talking to Schultz for about 10 minutes. He was the nicest guy in the world. Funny, engaging, intelligent, and well-spoken. I asked him about all the fighting and why he was like that. He didn't get mad at my question at all. He simply said that's how the league was back then. In the earliest days of the Flyers they were punching bags. The team had to beef up and get tough. Believe it or not in the minors Schultz was actually a good goal scorer. It's amazing to see the difference between how he is perceived and how he carries himself now.

The NHL has always been full of super tough guys. Shultz wasn’t the toughest, he was one of the craziest. He fought em all. His book is an interesting read.

Denis Potvin was a tough fighter, and the Hammer was lucky against him. As for the others you mentioned, yup…..Schultz lost big time.

I had heard that Dennis Potvin was an animal in juniors and that he almost killed a guy on the ice.But Potvin didn't fight much in the NHL as a #1 team defenseman and a top 5 all-time Islander superstar.

In a video in French, Rejean Houle tells the story of a fight between Schultz and the unlikely Serge Savard. One night at the Forum in 1975 or 1976, the Flyers were hitting everything that moved on the ice. After the first period, big Serge said to all his teammates in the locker room something like, "I'm going to take care of Schultz personally." He got into a fight with him and gave Schultz one of the toughest rides of his career. Serge fought the Flyers goon two more times in the following years.

I am REALLY looking forward to seeing a video on Terry O’Reilly…he was like the Tasmanian Devil on ice. I recall highlights of him throwing a check while his gloves were on the way off!! I grew up a Flyers fan liked nothing better on a Saturday on HNIC Hockey Night In Canada when the Flyers-Leafs played was a given the rough play would be in the game .

Bruin forward Terry O'Reilly just wants to play hockey. But Flyer goon Dave Schultz starts a fight with O'Reilly, whose hands were sore from the earlier beatdown he laid on goon "Wolfman" Jack Mcllhargy. O'Reilly answers the bell and smokes Schultz with twenty eight (28) solid punches, leaving the Flyer goon dazed and grateful for the refs to break this up. A dominating win for the young Bruin forward. But nobody could save Schultz - this beating was Dave's last Flyer fight (1/25/1976). The Flyers knew they needed to upgun to handle tough Terry O'Reilly and so they traded Schultz at the end of the year.

I noticed you didn't include the fight with Larry Robinson. I guess thats because Robinson beat the snot out of him. Schultz preferred opponents like Dale Rolfe a player that never threw a punch in his life. He was a punching bag after leaving Philly

@@sjames304 No Schultz landed bigger punches early. Slight edge to Schultz. Too many people who rate fights give the edge to the guy who lands at the end or on top. I think Behn took what he thought was a washed up Schultz too lightly here. Behn did come back at the end. Curt Fraser was hammering Wilson in a fight then suddenly ran out of gas and stopped throwing. It was strange because Fraser was very strong gym rat who could really throw them. Maybe end of his shift?

Schultz's main tactic (possibly their coach Fred Shero's idea) was to target the opposing teams' skilled players and get them in the penalty box for a 5 minute and/or 10 minute misconduct, that would allow the Flyers to exploit the apposing teams' lack of their key personnel to score goals to get the upper hand.

I loved Holt but don’t ever remember him fighting Schultz. Magnusson was a punching bag. Disgusting how Ranger players let Rolfe take that beating standing around not breaking it up. O Reilly was the only decent fighter Schultz faced in this clip.

As a Rangers fan I was embarrassed and humiliated that my team showed no guts when Schultz took liberties with Rolf. So when the Islanders joined the league I started rooting for them. Win, lose or draw... you gotta protect your brothers on the ice!

Schultz had no code. True goon. Hairpulling ,cheap shots, and fighting non fighters. He was tough but over rated. Many tough guys like Semenko, Probert, Larouque would have destroyed him. I remember he wanted nothing to do with Larry Robinson who was under rated with how tough he was.

As a Ranger fan, I had no love for Schultz.But ti be fair, Clarke Gillies did pull his hair when he beat Schultz as a rookie in the 1973 playoffs.Howatt also pulled Schultz's hair, so he received as much as he pulled!

In fact, Nystrom was already in the penalty box before the fight went off and he enthusiastically patted the rookie after his win, when he entered the sinbin. Also, I remember when Schultz got himself a "Gary Howatt haircut", as he termed it. By the way, how many playoff series have the Isles won this century? 😊
