The R-2800, as installed in the P-47 was both turbo and mechanically supercharged, with the turbo supercharger in the aft fuselage feeding a mechanically driven centrifugal supercharger mounted to the back of the engine.

In late 44 the "paddle prop" solved many of the Jugs issues. There is a reason the Jug shot down more planes than the 51.

Most don't understand how big it was..the airframe was constructed around what is essentially a "small" locomotive turbo and it's piping. it had to be located behind the pilot because it was too big to fit up front

It was meant to be a bomber escort. Then when the P-51 came along it found new life as a fighter bomber and CAS. Ironically enough, the P-51 was meant for CAS, but was too fragile to take ground fire and due to its range and dogfighting capabilities it became a good bomber escort. while the Jug, who could absorb all types of damage, filled the role that the P-51 was meant to fill.

The P 47 had nearly 4k aerial victories in WW2, you can't do that with a plane incapable of moving. The pilots loved it.
@AlexanderÖberg-j9n2 сағат бұрын
It’s not about aerial victories it’s about win to loss ratio. Those numbers are probably pretty skewed if you think about. A plane that is mass produced or made in large numbers will always have a high winning rate.

The P-47 does have one other factor in its favor, it can take damage in a way the Bf-109 cannot, due to its radial engine being very rugged and not having a liquid cooling system. Its also a high altitude fighter and loses that advantage completely down low.

There's a great book, "Thunderbolt" by Robert Johnson, detailing his experience becoming an Ace in the P47, alongside Francis Gabreski in the 56th Fighter Group in Europe. Some things that stick out from this video -- he always boasted about the P47's "zoom climb," where they'd trade speed for short-term climb, and noted that in the later models when they were fitted with paddle-blade propellers the "zoom" never stopped and they could just hang on the motor and CLIMB. Also many call-outs to the Bf109's wing slats that would creep out in super-slow/super-tight turns and throw the nose off. I'm not sure if DCS has all that in their models...
@5co756Сағат бұрын
You could saw them moving out , but does'nt looked like it changed something . These wing slats helped a lot , that's why the 109 only used the flaps for landing/starting . They were hand cranked .

People in the comments are so focused on fights being fair because they fanboy over certain countries or planes and when they see their plane get whacked they take it personally so they have to defend the loss by saying their favorite plane was disadvantaged in this "test" and its still the best plane. And therefore their choice of prefering it is valid

In my humble view, it’s the fact that most fights are unfair that make the similar fighter battles so legendary It’s why people love the X Wing and TIE Fighter battles: imagine one just came in and steamrolled the other? They’d be shite but the X Wimg and TIE Fighter battles are the ME-109 v Spitfires of the movie world and it’s what makes those battles such good viewing on TV years after the events

Germany learned the hard way to respect the Jug. Especially the Paddle prop version
@grizzly47363 сағат бұрын
Yeah, you don't turn fight in a Jug. You boom-n-zoom, and never let your dive go below your enemy. Dive in, set up your shot, hit or miss you dive away and extend then set up another pass. At least that is what always worked for me using planes like the Jug and Lightning in Aces High 2.
@towarzyszbeagle68662 сағат бұрын
100% this, boom, zoom, extend repeat. The weight works for you using this tactic because you're normally extending away at a speed the target can't match.

A lot of the P-47's tactics relied on mutual support, and the turning advantage the 109 has over the P-47 vanished at altitudes over 20,000 feet. It would be interesting to see a 4 vs 4 fight at 25,000.
