Part II of my Handcannonier series - I make a medieval sallet helmet fit for a gunner from the 15th Century, and explain a bit of history about Medieval sallets for cannoniers.
Enjoy!

I absolutely love how you added explanations to pretty much all of your decisions while designing and making the helmet. Not only does it show the project is well researched, but it also is a very organic way of introducing interesting pieces of knowledge into the video. I subscribed and can't wait for more. Cheers!

Ayy thanks I really appreciate that. Yeah I spent a while trying to figure out how I wanted to video to go. I figured this is the best way to go forward with these videos. Expect one every few months since they take a very long time to make. (I make armour for a living so most of my time is spent working on armour for customers!)

Great Video, really clever format to show the making of the sallet overlaid with a history lesson. Really engaging and entertaining

Very pretty sallet! Thank you for filming its production! Do you remember, where yoy read about those British handcannoniers who were working in the HRE? I wonder about the context. Besides that I feel, you overstate a bit how seldom this kind of troop was. What I've read about those arms, my impression is, they were by the middle of the 15th century relatively normal to be found in arsenals of towns and castles and private households, still kinda sharing the place with ranged arms with the crosbow (in the german lands at least). Although I don't think, your conclusion, a good mercenary of that time being financially well off, is wrong. But less just because them being specialist, but more because that was a good time being a good mercenary paywise (besides just the pay, there are german compensation bills for equipment & horses lost (and for medical treatment too, if i recall correctly) by mercenaries).

I'm always astonished at the thought that went into armour! So many little tweaks from lessons learned. I wonder, was there any hearing protection built in? Additionally, I lived close to Mansfield when I was seven. Did you ever hear of the Fishpool Hoard? That was right where I lived.

Honestly the one thing I've learned with armouring so far is that you can tweak and amend something forever and you'll never be truly happy with it haha. And no I haven't heard of it, but I shall definitely have to do a bit of reading up about it now! Thank you :)

I came for the Orford Castle vid (I'm a Suffolk boy) and stayed for the unexpected metalworking (I'm an erector & fabricator)! Sometimes the, generally pony, big-brain at YT comes up trumps. 👌
