In part 3, we shift away from the ongoing battle between the genesis and super nintendo to look at the handheld front where, once again, Sega and Nintendo duke it out for control over the portable gaming sphere.

Who would have thought that sega and Nintendo would be working together 20 years later

Dude, I fucking love your videos. Your videos deserve to be on the top results of the KZbin Gaming section. We gotta make this new algorithm include your stuff somehow.

Very good video! While I had both the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes always preferred what Sega was doing. I have never been a handheld player even though we (fiancee and I) have everyone that's been produced and released stateside (yes, including the Turbo Express). Speaking of the Gameboy, I hated it's pack-in game. Thankfully, I got Super Mario Land with it as well. My only issue with Mario Land was it is too damn short. I beat it the very next day. Addendum- I think you have forgotten the biggest handheld player in the market...Tiger.Com! :)

How the hell have you only got 8.8k subscribers? This content is amazing and you deserve to be well over that 100k mark just for this series alone.

I grew up with the gameboy pocket. Had tetris and mario land. Eventually getting donkey land 2. What I remember most was Pokemon red blue and yellow. I remember hearing about the gamegear. Wanted one but never got one. Always wondered what it be like on the other side

I didn't even have it on my mind, but that's awesome! Forget about the Lynx! I think it's really a shame NEC could not find success outside of Japan. It certainly would have helped their other machines more like this one .

Super Mario Land 2 and Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening have excellent graphics for Gameboy games.

I only know a couple of other B/W handhelds, and they came out well after the GG. Wonderswan, NGP... SEGA should have done likewise and THEN a colour model like so many others did. It would have even given them a chance to work out the kinks for it.

Actually the power consumption of the Gamegear was entirely due to the backlight. With it stripped out the Gamegear actually had a roughly comparable battery life to the gameboy. Of course that's on 6 batteries compared to the GB's 4 but the Gamegear was roughly a whole generation ahead and even without the light had a much larger and colored screen. The issue is that colorless LED's were still very expensive so SEGA had to use pretty much a TL tube. Those eat up a humongous amount of power.

I feel like Sega's ads actually HURT the system's chances. You don't tell prospective customers that they are slovenly idiots if they're using your competitor's products. Game Gear ads were literally "Game Boy is for fat, stupid ugly people!"
