When my father and mother were engaged he was drafted and had to go to war. He was badly wounded. He stepped on a land mine and lost his eyes and his leg. Everyone told her (including his dad) do not marry him, that it would be such a burden for her. She loved my dad so much that they did get married in the hospital where he was recuperating from his wounds. my mom was 19 years old when they married and they loved each other for almost 50 years until my father past away. She never remarried saying "he was the love of my life." They raised my brother and myself with so much love. Our life was peaceful and good. My father had a great sense of humor and kept us all laughing. He was never bitter over his condition and was a great man. Did mom sacrifice? I would say she worked very, very hard taking care of all of us. People would say she was a saint. I'm sure there was some frustration, but she never complained. To us this was our normal family life. We had lots of love and respect in our household and love really does conquer all. Shane and Hannah you are truly blessed to have found each other, as my parents were. This is your journey. What does it matter what people think or say. Always try to keep your sense of humor. Trust and have faith in the Lord and He will bring you through any challenges that you have to face.

One of my friends has interabled parents. Her dad became disabled while she was pretty young. I'm sure there were challenges, but her parents, like yours, managed to raise a bunch of kids without going insane and her dad found other ways to contribute to the well being of the family in spite of his limitations. Not having a body that works quite like it should isn't the end of the world. It's almost like humans have a big clever brain that makes them adaptable or something! :)

Some days can be really tough with tourettes and he just stands right by me every step of the way. Anyone teases me and he steps right in. We both sacrifice for each other. Relationships are built on sacrifice for each other. These people saying she's a hero or stupid for sacrificing for him are bloody idiots and have never truly been in love or were probably terrible partners to be with. Disabled, mentally ill, normal, it doesn't matter. Everyone who is truly in love sacrifices for their partner. I myself am disabled and have been married for nearly 24 years I have two amazing kids and the most wonderful and caring wife who is also my best friend. Ok I have limits but I worked hard and gave my wife and kids the best I could give them and out of all my abled bodied friends still married to my one and only and not single or on wife number 3. There are two many keyboard warriors in this day and age also very unhappy single people who live in the parents basements who are quick to judge and leave comments with out knowing the true facts, not that Shane or Hannah need to address these idiots in the first place. I felt that I was a burden and that he would be better off without having to care for me. Hubby got really upset and told me that he would like to be the one who decides if he is suffering and assured me that our 22 year marriage as been his happiest time. Being of service is a way of life, to care for someone can be a gift (hubby’s words not mine). I live with my grandmother now bc she has dementia, and she needs help with everything. I decided to move in with her bc I love her, and wanting to be with someone you love no matter what is a token of that love. People who criticize you are lacking that kind of love in their lives, and they are missing out on the incredible adventure that is loving one person that much that you want to be part of their journey, which might be called disability, aging, sickness, health, youth, loss... you name it. I loved that you made this video, even when it’s non of our business whether you are happy or miserable. 🥰

chris borggia, a relationship is a relationship, whether it is with a SO, with a friend, or with a family member. The point of my comment was the commitment you make with yourself based on the love you have for that person to take care of them if they need you. Also, physical care is just one type among many that are important for a person; I don’t understand were the “lol” part comes in...
@phoebec20204 жыл бұрын
I truly admire your choice to look after your grandmother. She obviously must have been a beautiful person for you to decide to look after her. We are looking after my husband’s mother who is 90 this year and we would never put her into a home. Yes, at times it is challenging to look after her but not for reasons others think. We watch her body letting her down and she is acutely aware of it which is heartbreaking. To lose independence for whatever reason is hard and we work on letting her have as much say in her day to day life, as possible but at times we need to step in for her safety. Is it a sacrifice? No, it is heartbreaking at times because of her suffering but also our way to thank her for loving and supporting hubby when he was young and for accepting my daughter from my previous marriage and never making her feel for one second that she isn’t part of the family. I love my mum-in-law and feel blessed to have her live with us.

I constantly think about a part in Shane’s book when he had to look after Hannah and realized that what people said to him his entire life was true: “labors” of love don’t feel like labor when you really care about someone. Looking after them is almost natural and not a sacrifice at all. Love is a give-and-take. It’s very powerful and an amazing example of what real love is.

I think people should understand that being a caregiver can be quit sacrificial if it doesn't aline with your personality or if it is for someone or something that is emotionally and physically draining, but it can also be the most wonderful and fulfilling thing, giving strength and further the relationship between the people involved. As with everything it all depends on how you view and handle the situation. Everyone is different in that way. Love your channel, you two. 💖💕 Shane, you really have my sense of humor. When I broke up with my disabled partner my grandma told me she was glad because, if I had stayed with him, I would have been throwing my life away. As glad as I am to no longer be with him, it has absolutely nothing to do with his health. He was just not right for me as a person. Had he been, though, and had we stayed together, I would have absolutely not been throwing my life away. It's in our nature to care for the people we love. It's not a sacrifice. They're not a burden. That was eight years ago and her comment still pisses me off to this day. Glad you guys made a video about it because it really needs to be addressed, and I kind of want to send this to my grandmother.

This video makes me smile. I am the ‘disabled’ one in my relationship. I have extreme agoraphobia, panic, BPD, depression, anxiety... list is endless.. and I feel all the time that my partner sacrifices so much being with me. I can’t go out with him, can’t stay at his, can’t go away, can’t go shopping....pubs/days out/meals/if he’s invited anywhere he goes alone (you get the idea). I know he compromises a lot to be with me..... and for 90% of our almost 3 year relationship I’ve been convinced I wasn’t worthy of being loved by him and even more convinced he would find someone ‘normal’.... turns out, he’s still with me, still loves me regardless of my mental illnesses and wants to be with me forever..... so yeah.... what I’ve learnt along the way is that it’s NOT sacrificing if you love someone, it’s what you do, and I would do the same for him............. THANK YOU BOTH for this video.

Aside from the agoraphobia (I have autism and DID instead), this is basically my thoughts. You’re completely right though, it’s not a sacrifice if it’s a choice you’re making out of love, and if the tables were turned, I would do the same for her without hesitation.

Don’t see this often, but Shane is a GREAT person. To have someone to be emotionally comfortable with, who you can be yourself with, and the way he looks at Hannah is always with love. He doesn’t see her as his care taker and neither does Hannah. She sees herself just helping the person she loves and for Shane to allow her to take care of him is huge too. Not many people will say they would legitimately take care of their partner through sickness and in health. She sees past his disability and anyone reading this who feels Shane is dragging Hannah down or keeping Hannah from living her life fuck off ☺️don’t watch them simple as that 🤷♂️ he provides just like any other man out there. Congratulations to you both on the wedding I’m so happy for you both! And love both of your personalities! You guys are so real! Goals 💯

Plenty of caregivers understand. You may not. Have you spent months or years taking care of someone who needed maximum assistance with all of their basic needs? Many people will eventually do this for aging spouses or parents. In my experience, most people who have acted as caregivers themselves specifically ask their families not to do this for them.
