My favourite theory of the mask salesman would tie in with twilight Princess. At the end of Ocarina, Link is returned to his childhood, he visits Zelda, which starts off his adventure in the first place. Because he knows what will happen in 7 years, he warns Zelda which leads to Ganondorf being executed at the colloseum and banished to the twilight realm. Majora, I believe would be held imprisoned in darkness, probably by Impa, maybe in the shadow temple? Or under kakarikos well? As Impa is away to the execution of Ganondorf, it's the perfect time for the mask salesman to steal the mask and leave Hyrule. It was one theory that I watched, I think it was Hyrule Gamer or Zeltik, can't remember. But it's a very interesting theory that could tie in with this. If Majora was imprisoned, the mask salesman knew exactly where it was, how to retrieve it, and knew that Impa being away was the perfect time to steal it. It's a mystery that we will never know.

I really like your theory, but I kind of lean more towards the possibility of the Happy Mask's Salesman being of the Sheikah, because they're literally the servants of the royal family and known for being involved in hexing rituals. It could still technically mean that he's part of the Royal family, but maybe not directly related.

@@ZelRando Honestly, I agree with Schoko. Happy Mask Salesman being a Sheikah is far more likely. The Royal family of Hyrule aren't the only people in Hyrule that wear gold jewelry. And the fact that the Mask of Truth is specifically a Sheikah relic lends more weight to the Sheikah hypothesis.

I'm inclined to think the Happy Masks Salesman has a side trade besides bringing happiness by lending masks and he's a merchant, a particularly rich one being able to afford gold accessories and purple dyed clothes, but still a Sheikah serving the royal family, entrusted with the specific task of retrieving Majora's mask, bringing his other wares with him inside that huge backpack and choosing to travel alone likely because either no one can know what he's up to or Hyruleans are not supposed to know about Terminians and vice versa.

@@ZelRando It's also likely that the Twili & Gerudo were simply the cursed faction of those who sided with Ganon during the first splitting of the Triforce trinity after being united in Skyward Sword, talked about during Twilight Princess, with the Sheikah merely being a resourceful Hyrulian loyalist faction attempting to mitigate the bloodshed. The only difference between the 3 tribes that were once one is that 2 can perform magic, the Sheikah and Twili being mirror images, while the Gerudo were simply cursed with Ganon's/Demise's unique appearance to make the war much easier without spies able to slip into ranks unseen.

I lean towards him being part of the Sheikah as well, but maybe he is a lesser noble. Still someone of nobility just not just the royal family. Another thought watching this, what if he stole Majora's Mask from the Sheikah. He seems to have access to other Sheikah items, like the Mask of Truth. I would think this is either because he is part of the Sheikah, or his love of mask drove him to steal from even the Sheikah.

In the aspect of a monarch-led kingdom, many members are an integral part to the function and control of its society. You have the villagers, merchants, warriors, battle tacticians, and spies as common denizens of this kingdom. The king, queen, princess, prince, minister, advisor, state-craftsman, and astrologist are all in the highest echelon and are held to the royal standards. If one of them is tainted by another kingdom's conquest for power they soon will see their own kingdom in collapse. To fit this in thematically, one needs not power but elements of courage and wisdom to progress through life in a stable manner. It is the overreach and the ambitiousness that power gives to oneself. This extension then forms evil as its byproduct - the malice for one's undoing. Such is the case as presented here in some regard.

I was wondering why you theorized that he has something to do with the royal family. Then it hit me. He knew about the ocarina of time (“I see you got your special item back.”). He even had some info on Majora’s Mask that no one else knew about and was aware of Link’s time traveling. Maybe his business is just a front for him to be able to hunt down the mask without drawing suspicion.

@@ZelRando what if he’s a Shiekah in desquise? Zelda was taught the Shiekah skills to desquise herself in OoT and we see in SS that Impa has mystical powers, meaning that the Shiekah race does inherently have the ability of high level ninjas. He most likely dyed his hair or just use magic to change his appearance and went around gathering intel for the royal family as a salesman.

Purple is also seen as a color of royalty, many people of royalty wore purple clothing back in the day.

There are three characters that remember everything. Tatle, link and the masked sales man. Please don't leave out the fary as she does make different remarks depending on what you have done before. Prime example is when she is yelling at skull kid. It starts as shocks, grows angry and outraged, till it almost becomes all out hate. The true situation comes to light and she becomes confused. If you go back at this point and redo she is much more understanding, forgiving and even tells mister bad to stop his charad! Talk about remembering things that have gone before! Just WOW! Thing is I don't think most people will ever see this dialog. Even her brother is confused by this statement and the bag guy say well whatever and just gives up! IT's crazy! I feel the need to point out that he never calls the ocarina, the ocarina of time. He calls it your precious item. He never once calls it by name showing me a lack of knowing what it truly is. He probably just guessed it was important based on the way link was running after skull kid as it was one of two items skull kid took. As for the mask of truth, where else were they going to put it in that game. On a different note maybe he stumbled upon. He doesn't even own the shop the first time you arrive at Hyrule in ocarina of time! He is there reading over the rules the first time you arrive! He even seems a little confused and perplexed while reading the shop sign of ownership as the shop is empty except for this sign. There is a sign saying that anyone who wants to use the shop can so long at they make people happy. I don't even think it specifies masks and is rather his particular taste. Thought the large clown masks don't change. the sign in the shop is on the left in the clown mask if you want to check it out. He only claims ownership of it once you return from the castle. If we are talking about masks then how do you explain how he got a gibro and garoudo mask then? Same goes for the keton mask as they aren't exactly a public spices. They don't reveal themselves to just anyone. Honestly so many of his masks don't make much sense as to why he has them from day one of selling masks. I always figured he just ran out of stock and was out on a business trip to gather more when he heard rumors of or discovered the ruins or text that lead him to the ruins, or maybe he just stumbled into them but that's not as fun. After all there are only so many mask you can sell before you run out and they have to be crafted rather particularly. I can't imagine that he gets them from just anywhere. He says himself that he knew the power and intentions of the mask. He might have even been shown by that mask it's self what it was capable of. Not to mention the legends might have a visual picture or two of what it was capable of giving him a ruff idea of what it could do. You could even say for his exposure to the mask he might have a sense of it's power and make a guess off of that. Or you know realized earlier then the rest of the inhabitant's that the moon was falling and knowing what the mask was capable of. Who is to say he wasn't about to leave to get help from outside when he saw your run in with the imp, noticed your sword and decided to fallow you instead. The inside of the tower it's self is a strange place where time does not flow. I would more easily believe him being sheikah then royal family even though you made a strong point about the colors. Now that I think about it he is acting more on the feeling of dread then the actually knowable of events. Call it a gut hunch. None royals have those too by the way. Then again the fact that he can even feel energies like that might mean that something is there though hylians from time to time have been shown to be sensitive to these energies too. I don't know what to make of it. The Royal family is certainly the most sensitive to dark and holy powers, but priest even sometimes random individuals have show this feeling too. Like an unusual sense of dread hanging over a village. I feel like I have been bashing the theory too much. It's a good theory despite the holes in the evidence and might actually have some backing. It's certainly and entertaining thought experiment, and a feasible theory. Just not sound on the evidence you gave. He might just be more creepy average person then royal family or even sheikah then anyone would like to admit. There are some really weird people out there. I need only point you to Agitha the bug princes. The two bird enthusiast. The man of stone and several others. There are some weird people in zelda. They don't always make sense by our standards.

hmmmm, I dont think it is too far out. Purple is generally associated with kings and royalty in Europe, because of how expensive the dye used to be. The Happy Mask Salesman is definitely strange, and my gut inclination is that he is some sort of ageless demi-god, or maybe a kami. He clearly possesses some pretty crazy powers, but the skull kid did manage to knock him out, which, of course, might speak more to the power of the skull kid than THMS' weaknesses. Also, ninja would sometimes use the disguise of a sales person or traveling monk to move around japan undetected, so it is also possible the whole sales person is a guise. Both hypothesis are very good!! Great game, very underrated.

Which to know of both he would have to have been told by Zelda or the King seeing as they are the only ones in Hyrule who know of Link travelling to the future and stopping Ganondorf

His jewellery looks like it could also be made from polished brass, his clothes are more middle eastern/Indian than regal unfortunately but it is a very interesting theory regardless. Most the masks he carry are references to other things. What if he actually has connections to Ikana? His jewellery looks as though it could fit their aesthetics...

Great theory Infamous! You have a gift for explaining things so clearly that I feel dumb not noticing these things when I play 😅. Like all the connections with magic items and music that the Happy Mask Salesman just knows just screams ties to the royal family now. This reminds me of another recent Zelda theory I saw about the bug collecting girl from Twilight Princess might be a royal family member too. Seeing these theories about royal connections back to back really makes me wonder if the King or whoever has connections to the Goddess Hylia had any other children 🤔. I assume the powers come from Zelda being the incarnation of the Goddess Hylia so something fishy seems to be going on with these other members 😅. Great video Infamous!

I had thought about The HMS being a royal for awhile I just didn't think I would have enough evidence to support the theory, but he definitely seems to be connected to the Royal family somehow. I saw Hyrule Gamers video just after I started this video, was very interesting and combined with my video makes me want to search for other possible characters who could be connected! This actually kinda makes sense. But it also kinda makes me think he might be terminas counterpart to link. Similarly to link between world has ravio (who also acts as a salesman of sorts) and since the ikana family is supposed to be that worlds hyrulean family counter part it would make sense. In addition, the happy mask salesman seems to be heavily stylized to look like shigeru miyamoto. The Zelda games were loosely inspired by his childhood growing up in JP. So in other words he might be that worlds link =] I might be reaching here but kinda fun to think about .

To me the mask salesman has always been a cosmic entity. It makes no sense that hes the only one that could contain majoras mask with just a bag of masks. Also the creepy knowing laugh always gave me the impression he pulls more stings then he lets on.

I dont think royal family can be that strong. I agree if he is a sheikah, but sheikah is a ninja that protect royal family from the shadow, and his outfit is too glamorous to say it as shadow. So I think, even if termina is just distorted hyrule by link's mind, the moon seems real enough. There are 5 childs there including the majora itself, and I think they are the ancient tribe that using shadow magic that were sealed because too dangerous. Happy sales man is one of them I think. He is strong enough, that I think this tribe is the same existence as hylia

It's possible that the HMS is a member of the secretive Sheikah tribe! They know an awful lot about the Royal Family of Hyrule, possess incredible powers, etc., and he even resembles some of the people who live in Kakariko-e.g. the cursed family inside of the Skulltula House.

You know, it occurs to me that there's a different royal family that is known for their powerful magic, knowledge of secret mystical artifacts kept secret by the Hyrulean Royal Family (and making plans requiring Link to get his hands on said artifacts), obtaining and unsealing Ancient Calamities, being able to travel the Lost/Kokiri Woods without any apparent risks, being able to play a piano/organ, and having red hair... Maybe the Happy Mask Salesman is a previous King of the Gerudo, kept (relatively) young-looking by either whatever spells keep Twinrova looking so young, or some other secret magics that he found during his own lifetime (possibly the same magics are what make him have such unsettlingly jumpy mannerisms).
