It is Kemiri/Candlenut in English (the working lady sitting on the floor when you entering the market). Then, something looks like a rock in the basket is Kluwak. It is some kind of hard nut. It is specially used for making Rawon Soup, trademark of Surabaya and Malang. It is beef soup with black color broth. The black color is from Kluwak, and a little bit gives saltiness/savory taste. Or, I almost don't taste any different though, it is just gives black color. Please, try it!!!😊 And, that is not an onion. We called onion as Bawang Bombay (don't know why), and that is shallot and called as Bawang Merah (red bawang because it is reddish-purple). Than , we have garlic as Bawang Putih (white bawang). All of the Indonesian has black hair color, black/dark brown eyes, darker skin color such as more yellowish skin color (not too pale and not too dark but a little bit brighter/almost yellow. Not bright such as Chinese or Japanese people) or brown skin color (in the middle color, not too pale or too dark like Middle Eastern people, most of Indonesian has) and black skin color (Eastern part of Indonesian, but not too dark like African), so when they see people like you with brown hair-tall-pale skin-strange eyes color, it is so amazing. Cantik is pretty. And ganteng is handsome. 😂

Actually, Surabaya Square is located at the Heroes Monument, not there. Kya Kya Kembang Jepun is Chinatown in Surabaya and during the day this area is a trade center, while at night it is very busy with people walking, because this area is a night market with lots of culinary delights.

Glad to see you in Surabaya! I you you enjoy your stay here and if you like such old market you can visit the old part of Pasar Atom market, near Kembang Jepun. It’s more or less like old Chinese market with all its foods. Delicious but affordable food. And it’s open only during the day. Santong noodle, siomay bakwan Kapasari, tahu campur and shrimp cakue Peneleh are some of my recommendation.

The Red Bridge is a historic bridge because it was there that General AWS Mallaby from England was killed during a shootout between Indonesian independence troops and Allied troops on August 30th, 1945 which triggered a massive battle on November 10th, 1945 which killed around 15,000 Indonesian citizens, of which 2,000 were Indonesian independence army fighters and around 600 allied troops…which is now celebrated as Heroes' Day. Another general who died during the battle in Surabaya in the October - November period in Surabaya was General Robert Guy Loder Symonds

Alun2 in a big square field in the middle of the city, with 4 side heading 4 direction (east, west, etc). On each side there are a palace (where the king resides), an army barack, a Mosque, and last one maybe market. Every city or kabupaten in Indonesia have one alun2 because they used to be a kingdom. But Surabaya never be a kingdom, so it doesn't have a real alun2. Just a city centre with city hall, cultural center and some open area

The manual tuktuk is rickshaw, we call it becak. Indonesian use it to bring many goods as well, not just people. So I think it won't break down if you ride it alone. You have to try it, it will be fun. Becak is my favorite transportation beside Bajaj (Indonesian tuk tuk you saw in Jakarta)

So, in europe people say good morning until noon. Onwards until 6 pm people say good afternoon and from 6pm onwards evening then night. In indonesia, we say good morning(pagi) until 10 am ish, then from 10 onwards we say afternoon(siang) until 4 pm. Then we have selamat sore up until sunset. Then ofcourse We have selamat malam.
