I'm new to Madden this year; never played or bought it before. I'm from the UK and I wonder if the growing popularity of the NFL worldwide contributes to this game's success. I started watching NFL about 6 years ago, prior to that I was all about football (soccer). As my love of NFL increased my passion for soccer decreased. I still buy PES for online soccer play but this year I also wanted to play some NFL. Madden is the only option. I'm actually enjoying it, to be honest. I only play offline (even in MUT) and because everything is new I can't really tell you what its major issues are (as opposed to problems with FIFA or PES, which I know like the back of my hand)

My online Madden league guarantees EA our money every year, and i'm sure other leagues are the same. As much as the game needs work, we have so much fun in our online league that it alone is worth the $60 price. This makes me wonder if they didn't have online franchise, how much their sales might tank. I don't think the game would sell nearly as well if it was all MUT, Play Now, and Face of Franchise.

In today's media climate you can't believe their sales numbers have any accuracy. I'm still playing a lot of Bots in the H2H seasons. Only took me 2 days to hit the 50 win tier. And on the 3rd time grinding it I got to 89 total wins. So only took 3 days to get 89 H2H wins. I'm just an above average player, and not above average by much.

@@kingsaco Blizzard's Warcraft is a perfect example of how a great game can go bad. I will say this for Blizzard they have had a few bright spots since Lich King but not enough to brag about. They cornered the market with little to no competition and just didn't give a rip about gamers. They may still be bringing in the money but not a fraction of what they brought in with the original 3 series of the game. I bought Madden 21 so I'm going to play it for another month but I wiill not buy any more Madden in the future until they address Franchise and improve their disconnects that I'm penalized for. I thrashed a guy 42-0 last night and in the last minute of the game they disconnect and I get the loss. Waste of time and not very fun. Makes me question the validity of their so called big tournaments.

Couple thoughts on this. 1. Madden sales go up every year, but NFL revenue goes up every year as well. The popularity growth of the NFL continues to help drive the sales of Madden to new users. 2. Madden is the top seller in August, and number two is UFC. Those are the only two games on the top ten list that were released in August. Several others on the August list have been out for months or years, and those games are out selling Madden for the 2020 year. Madden sales will diminish year long, with all the sales hype being around launch that coincides with the NFL launching its season. 3. When looking at those sales, there is no comparison to how NBA 2K typically sells, or yearly sales comparisons to other sports games. We see Madden sells well in August, but how does it sell in September or October? And without a competitor since 2005, there is no data referenced to show how it does with competition. 4. As Eric points out, the writer seems unaware of what’s missing from the game. To even suggest it’s fully featured to a point of having nothing new to add smacks of being uninformed on the subject you’re writing about. 5. The people complaining about Madden, providing the feedback, declaring the game is bad, have also bought the game. They do it because they can’t get a football fame otherwise, and if they hadn’t bought the game they wouldn’t be able to provide the backlash. Just because the game sales doesn’t mean it’s the best game they can offer. We truly don’t know the formula that EA uses to gage it’s engagement. Thanks for the breakdown. Keep up the good content.

This confirms what I have been saying for years, the true Madden fan LIKES the cheezy, buggy, play because they don't have any skill. The ones who call thenselves hardcore are the same also. The pro pjayers are the worst. How do you call yourself a football fan and run the ball every play? Madden is not footvall, it's Madden. Look at the reality, "hardcore fans" complain "he was wide open and he dropped it", "he overthrew an easy oass"...well that is reality. No QB finishes the season at 80%/6000 yds/70 TDs, receivers drop open passes, defenders miss tackles, this is how real life NFL works. They don't want real football, they want Madden and that's exactly what EA is giving them. Like you pointed out, even the ones who complain still buy it and play it so how unhappy could they be? The game is selling because it's EXACTLY what it's fans want.

It's the small things, i can't consider myself a hardcore gamer but I am a competitor and playing football my whole life and just loving the game is the reason I agree with you it's the only football game in town lol so of course like others and myself were going to buy, the name sales itself even from the anticipation from the start of the season. So if I could give some ideas it would be.. better customization options really from the Jersey customization and stadiums even cleats, more like the nba2k variety.Then better user highlight segment via franchise mode like the Monday night football crew putting more importance on big games better news feedback, mvp watch, like how NCAA football did with the high school ESPN highlights, as far as gameplay it is was it is, it has gotten better and i believe it will keep improving, but it still gives you the reality you win some you lose even if it's off a glitch that's life . Sports games should go the subscription route like $30 a year with constant roster updates, patches, aesthetic changes and tweaks and then maybe every three years they do a massive upgrade/update and charge an extra $25 on top of the yearly fee.

The reason we like Franchise is because it gives us the most realistic experience you can get. Scouting and Drafting, Trading and Free Agency, Adjusting things like penalties, playing in snow or rain, developing rookies and being able to Challenge Plays are just some of the things we can do to give it a real feel.

I agree with your point about there's only so much you can add to a game. Madden is the exception to this. What I want is Madden '07 with 2020 technology. The point the article made about there's only so much content you can come up with doesn't fly with Madden. They've take so much Franchise content away and rather then replacing it or adding to it they concentrate entirely on Ultimate Team and micro transactions. Solution.....put everything back into Madden franchise that was in the game in '07 would be a huge start in fixing current day Madden.

I would gladly spend $60-80 a year for a game with minor upgrades .....IF..... it had great, realistic, sim style gameplay and one hell of a franchise mode. The hours I would probably put in would justify it. The problem is, EA games just plain out suck. All of they're titles lack a lot of the fundamentals of the respective sport, never mind an up to date play style of currents leagues. All because they put all their effort into their hustle (ultimate team) and some say they neglect franchise in hopes that we give up and get lured into their scam. To expand on your point near the end there: I typically play MUT when the game comes out. I never buy points (ew). I'll just do some minimal grinding and take all my playtime in h2h. Anyway, I usually get burned out by November or December so this year I made the transition from console to pc so I could just pay $15 a month and have access to the $80 MVP edition. I'm easily going to save money and having to take a big wallet hit at once this year especially when this subscription will merge with game pass which I already have. Otherwise, I'd have just canceled it. Now, hopefully some folks out there will take this advice and help bulk up the player base next year. Lol. Instead of having arcade competitive and simulation they should have three teams that take one each-the yard arcade. Online head to head/mut competitive. Franchise simulation. Then each team could focus on making the various modes more smooth with all the bells and whistles. Franchise should include things like suspensions for ped off field stuff, the mode should be driven by numbers and stats. Yard should be like NFL blitz and competitive should ban cheesers and spammers.....they should only release a new game every three years in between they could sell roster updates and draft classes while make adjustments as needed.....

I think Madden has made a huge leap in my eyes because I think gameplay is the #1 thing I look for in a game and Madden is the best I have seen probably ever in that aspect but I still haven't bought it. I am both a Madden guy and a 2k guy. 2k gets dragged for completely different reasons and that is its rosters. You see, 2k has this thing where the rosters can ruin the sim of a season. For example, let's just say that there is a center in the NBA that has only shot like 5 threes SINCE COLLEGE, 2k would have their 3 point tendency ( a rating of how often they take those shots in the sim) at like an 85. Also, when players progress, tendencies don't progress with it. For example, in 5 years a 70 overall that doesn't get much playing time has a low shot tendency because it ain't like he gonna get many shots up in-game. Ok cool. So why is it that in 5 years he's an 80 overall now with the SAME TENDENCY TO SHOOT. That's a wasted 80 overall then if he won't score!

I’ll admit I like the story modes in sports games this generation, but it’s been hit or miss. For NBA 2K, it was definitely 2K16’s MyCareer with Spike Lee. Madden 18 & 19 with longshot. The Journey in FIFA 17-19. Then MLB The Show was ehhh, but Road to The Show gameplay has been solid. But I definitely didn’t like the archetypes they introduced. Prior to that, I felt I could legit build a superstar pitcher who was a control freak and flamethrower. With MLB 20, I made a flamethrower and was giving up more HRs then I’ve ever given up before.
