I absolutely loved this movie!! The way that it began with Nat Love being forced to watch Rufus Buck murder his parents was a touch of brilliance, IMO, because it made for the perfect prologue while giving you every reason to invest in Nat Love's revenge. And given the simplicity of it, from a narrative perspective, it felt remarkably fresh. So much of that, I believe, has to do with the writing. The action and violence were completely unsparing, which they let you know early with Nat's parents, and I think that allowed for them to really lean into comedy without it seeming like some kind of spoof -- something which would've been all too easy as an all-black western starring a number of famous comedians. Of all the directors out there capable of threading that needle, the only one that comes to mind for me is Quentin Tarantino and this film felt like it could've been one of his own. It had the revenge element, the brilliant twist (with Rufus Buck's confession at the end), and was visually just incredible -- not to mention cast to perfection. Regina King was amazing! Lakeith Stanfield was amazing! Moreover, the lesser known actors who were outstanding; Cuffee, Jim Beckworth, Bill Pickett, etc. Even Deon Cole as the mayor of Redwood, a mostly serious role, where he was (again) just brilliant! One of my favorite scenes, by the way, was in the very beginning when the Nat Love Gang was setup in the mountains trying to ambush the Crimson Gang. I love when they're all taken out and it's just Damon's character left, and he goes; "You killed my brother!" and Fast Draw Jim goes "Half-brother, calm down". 😂 Favorite film of the year, at least for me, is still far and away "Judas and the Black Messiah", but on pure entertainment value alone this one deserves to be somewhere very high on the list. It felt exciting the whole way through, and honestly by the end I almost felt for Rufus Buck. I can see how they were able to land so many stars to do this film, because the story itself really is so much more than just a western. Not to say it's the deepest film I've ever seen -- it's certainly no Inception -- but it absolutely hit on what it wanted to be, which I feel like earns it a very high grade. Overall: 8.5/10.

It was a very good movie. Cherokee Bill was my favorite character. Lakeith is such a great actor. He gave Cherokee a layered personality and it was all subtle. Loved loved loved. Cuffee is my next favorite.
