Could this be the hardest 1 mile hike in America? Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park rivals the Grand Canyon, and it is only a 1 mile hike to the bottom. Beginning from the south rim, we hiked the Gunnison Trail. This is one of Colorado's more unique hike. A primitive, meaning no trail markers, trail to the bottom of the canyon. Park rangers limit the permits to 15 PEOPLE per day down this trail. Snag one of these permits and you will not be disappointed. Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the most underrated park in Colorado and maybe the entire national park system.

Great hike guys. When yall were on the way down and in good spirits I was like "wait till they have to go back up". I haven't gotten the chance to do this yet but had a good friend do it and she said she wanted to cry on the way back up lol. It's so beautiful down there at the bottom I know it's worth it

You two are hardcore! I’ll just take the road down to the bottom (when it’s open) 😆 Nice rare video of an under appreciated Park 🤙🏼

its weird how adding music and some good camera shots makes anything look better than it is. I live 20 mins from here. Been there so many times that the wow factor is gone. We just drive down to the bottom and walk the shore fishing and yes there is a road that goes to the river.

It’s easy to look past what you grew up around and think it is boring… but I feel like I’m finally fully appreciating the Western Slope and I’m 25 ❤😂

Nice video, beautiful at the bottom. We are in our 60s and hike everywhere we can in the U.S. You'll be hiking at our age too, but probably not this one again, lol!

My buddy and I did this in June 2020 to do some fly fishing, but we camped next to the river for 3 nights. Great hike, but 70 pound bags made it quite difficult both down and up. We're planning another tip this year, but probably doing the north rim this time. The rangers said there was a lot more river access. Great video!

Thats awesome! I cannot imagine hauling a 70 pound bag up this canyon. I wish we would have camped and I have heard the fishing is unreal. Thanks for watching!

Challenging but rewarding hike! From what the ranger told us while we were getting our permit, this is a primitive hike. The intent is to limit the amount of hikers to allow everyone the time to be alone in nature and to rely on your trail finding skills rather than following markers. Although we endured some extra exhaustion after getting off trail, it is all part of the experience on this particular trail. Happy hiking and thanks for watching!

Planning to hike into the canyon with my little brother next week. When is the earliest you are allowed to get the wilderness permit? Can you get it the day before your hike?

We had covid rules so things might have changed. We did get our permit the day before at the visitor center.

The view from the bottom is always so cool in another way. That's one of the things that has me going back to Zion in Utah. It takes that feeling of being tiny that you usually get at a giant canyon and enhances it.

I would advise hiking boots, mid high with heavy tread, and stiff uppers. That helps engage all your leg muscles, instead of just feet, ankles and calves.

Can you tell me more how the permits work?
@SOSASATSUNRISE
@SOSASATSUNRISE 3 жыл бұрын
This is all from memory but I know you must obtain a permit at the south rim visitor center the day before the hike. I think they start registration at 3:30. 15 permits are given per day. They say everyone in your party must be present but there was someone who got permits for their party of 4 since there was only about 8 of us there.

Amber's shoes are Vivo barefoot. Both of us prefer a shoe that allows the foot to move and flex naturally. After a few weeks of slowly strengthening muscles to handle the lack of support, we have found this style to be our favorite. Thanks for watching!
