I knew this, from a fairly recent video of Magnus being challenged with it -- he solved it quite quickly.

Lovely puzzle! I set it up on my board and spent half an hour trying everything obvious that didn't work. Eventually I looked at Qa8 and realised only two of the pieces on the diagonal actually had to be moved for the mate, so it is a well-concealed zugzwang!

My respect for Magnus increased substantially when I realised that this was the puzzle that he was challenged with in that one video! He solved it really quick too. GOAT for a reason.

After looking at all the attack options for the first move, I was quickly convinced it was some sort of zugzwang solution. I saw that black would have to move either the queen or the rook, but I didn't find the key move to a8 that turns that to white's advantage.

The line I find more artistic is Qd4 that blocks the King.

I got very lucky on this one....I started by trying to convince myself that the b7 knight could not be the piece to deliver checkmate because c5/d6 were covered by both the rook and queen. But then I thought, wait a minute, if one had to move away and the other was pinned... Also, "when in doubt, stick something on a seemingly random corner square" seems to be a pretty good heuristic for these two-movers.

Sooo instructive. Just a few thoughts I processed after seeing the solution: Which pieces are the key defenders? Rook and Queen. Therefore White needs to create immediate threats against those pieces. Note: my rating fluctuates between 1450 and 1550 😅

I didnt see the solution but I had a little revelation after studying the puzzle and then watching the video for the answer. I realized when studying I am short 1 move, as the rook and the queen can both block. So how am I going to get mate in 2 if black still has 2 blockers? The answer is to have black make one of our moves. I.e. we have to put him zugschwang. Nice puzzle

without calculations I figured this out in 5 seconds, because the almost full diagonal points into the direction to fill it further with a piece

For me (FM) : Extremely easy, while I actually often struggle with problems. 😉 - The "silent" starting move completely suggests itself, after a quick 3-second glance, under the given context of a problem.

I saw the unforced checkmate, pawn to b5, if queen blocks instead of the rook, then the white rook to e3 would give a checkmate. I did notice that rook blocking spoils it. At least rook to e3 was part of the solution. Queen A8 never occurred to me.

Unfortunately I can't solve it myself because I already knew the solution from another video (with solver Magnus Carlsen). Recognising zugzwang positions is always difficult, even for chess programs.
@zogzog1063
@zogzog1063 6 ай бұрын
Not especially difficult. Just a matter of recognising the piece to deliver the coup de grace. Knight (to g8); Queen (to a1) and Bishop (from g2) dont work. It kind of defaults to the Knight on b7.
@drigans2065
@drigans2065 6 ай бұрын
Saw it in about a minute as realised the rook discoveries were going nowhere, the knights and black squared bishop had a mating net, the queen and rook moves were in a kind of zugzwang if the queen was on a8. I think I was lucky :-)

Found it too. Only the black queen and rook can move thus the idea of a zugzwang. The queen on a8 can pin the remaining piece after one of the two black pieces moves and white moves its own b7 knight with check(mate) on b6 or c7.

I noticed that the Knight on b7 was important but failed to see the Qa8 move. Yet again I missed the zugzwang. I always fail to take that into account when attempting chess puzzles. It's one thing I need to improve on but I just can't figure out how to do it. Those moments when I can identify the problem but have no solution to it are frustrating. Do you have any advice on how to figure out when a chess puzzle has a zugzwang component?

I’m never right, so I’m probably wrong here… If he takes knight with rook, he survives a third turn before mate; or if he moves king to d3 in the first place. You still win just not in two… I think.

@michaeledwards2251
@michaeledwards2251 6 ай бұрын
@@Chess-strategy It definitely is, the clip was very annoying. I saw a thumbnail, clicked and all it showed was Magnus making comments, with the pieces he was viewing out of shot. There was no picture of the position. From remarks he made, it is possible to estimate how he did it. For a 2 move puzzle, no white piece whose movement allows a check on the white king by black, can be used : N7 is eliminated. Viewing the piece movements of the black pieces, only the Queen and Rook can be moved : he made a remark about zugzwang. (about 1 minute) Move of the f3 rook fails to checkmate, the king has d4 as an escape. (He made a remark, after presenting the solution, the mate by the bishop was semi-hard to find.) This leaves the white queen a4 and knight b4. The black king has a single square, typical of a smothered mate. The b7 knight would have delivered mate, if both the Queen and Rook were prevented from capturing. The zugzwang of the position, either the Queen or rook has to move, means a piece pinning either the Black Queen or rook to the black king, would allow mate by the b7 knight. The piece left to pin the black Queen or rook, was the White Queen when on a8. The attempted counter by Black is Qd4 which fails to Rf3c3 : the black king escape is occupied by the Black Queen. (2 minutes, he announced the solution. )
