Imagine spending hours learning a language you've never even spoken before and trying to parrot it back perfectly (and keep in mind that for this shot to work the person you are working with also has to do this perfectly or else the shot is ruined) for a scene that never even made it into the theatrical cut. If I was him watching this in the theaters, I would've been furious.

"Mirovor" is a magical cordial. Gandalf is given a very small bottle when the Fellowship of the Ring sets out. It does not mean wine.
@williamwebb5803 ай бұрын
Realistically though, I don’t think they’d drink any other kind of wine in Rivendell, or at least they don’t have specific distinguishing names for them. It is the “Cordial of Imladris” as Gandalf calls it, and Tolkien went back and forth with its etymology. Eventually settling on it coming from Valarin _Mirub-hōze_ “honey-wine or mead”. The true Miruvórë that Galadriel sings about in her lament, and is translated as “nectar” could probably only be made with Valinorian ingredients. With the vintage brewed in Rivendell being sourced from local flowers and honey, therefore making it a debased imitation of the literal Ambrosia of the gods, but still technically a miruvor or “mead” as the elves made it. I don’t think it’s too far out of left field to say that miruvor could in theory be used to describe a wide rage of beverages from Valinorean nectar to mannish wine. Akin to how many words in elvish relating to magic and sorcery also describe knowledge, skill and deep lore. To men, there’s a clear difference between the two of attainability, whereas to an elf, it would only be a question of potency. It’s not clear if the elves distinguished between mead and wine in their language, but earlier forms of the legendarium list words for wine as _mîr_ and _miru,_ so given the later context Tolkien gives to the etymology of miruvor, I think these could also fit being derived from Val. _mirub._ Though I still believe David Salo did the best he could, given how spontaneously this translation request was seemingly dropped on him. Sorry about writing a thesis on elvish alcohol.

The gold medal went to American Horror Story "Freaks" when Elsa remembers Nazi Germany. I had to grab the subs for that because I just couldn't understand what the Nazis were saying (yes, there are situations you don't have the subs included at all, not even if normally there would be an automatic translation of something... Gen X, what shall I say).

And their ears...dear lord. Does Celebrimbor looks like the most skilled craftsman ever? He looks like alzheimer riddled grandpa.
