Curious to hear other people’s opinions about the USMLE vs. MCCQE 1 (Canadian exam) 🤙 anyone else find the American exams way more in depth and just harder overall?
@alexconlon7210
@alexconlon7210 Жыл бұрын
I did the Canadian exam a few weeks after the US one and found it hard cause I was so used to the questions trying to trick you all the time, also some of the case scenarios on the Canadian exam were pretty whacky, hard to know what they were looking for. Overall American exam is way harder tho from a pure knowledge standpoint. Very different exams though and I'm not sure why we are all told to take them back to back.

I admire your honesty and transparency. Congratulations on taking your Step 2 exam, you did it 🎉. I’m also looking to take step 2 and I know how draining preparing for step 1 was, so I can literally feel your pain. It hurts literally to prepare for these exams. You got this, thanks for being an inspiration to us all 🙏🏾🤗

Ima. Canadian, currently in aruba for med school. I’m in my final semester prepping for USMLE Step 1 before clinical rotations in the states. It’s definitely a lot harder than MCCQE because your getting 3/4 order questions vs 1st order questions. cool to see your experience through Canadian med school.
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Жыл бұрын
Hey Hanyssey, nice to meet you 🤙 best of luck with the Step 1 and I hope you get a couple of days off afterwards to recover. I agree about the 3rd order questions but also think that the US system wants their students to be aware of everything regardless of what specialty they get into, whereas the Canadian system holds back on a lot since plastic surgery residents will never need to know about tropical parasitic infections for example. In any case, happy New Years and all the best with your studies!

Hi, can you do a seperate video entailing the differences between step 2 CK and the qe1 you faced ad since majority of the students do UWORLD for the qe1 and what extra do you need to do for the qe1. Thanks
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Жыл бұрын
Hi Anas, I’ll definitely compare the 2 in the future - but I’d be quick to recommend anyone prepping for the MCCQE 1 to watch my video on it. In brief though, for QE1 do UWorld and then read up on Canadian ethics via Toronto notes. Then do some official practice exams. All the best 🤙

Hi, does it matter which university you go to to for undergrad if you want to apply to med school in Canada. Like do you have higher acceptance chances if you go to a highly ranked university like western or McMaster????
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Жыл бұрын
No it does not matter :) I did not go to a prestigious university myself - I was accepted into medical school in my first try after graduating from biomed at Ryerson University. The most important things are your GPA, MCAT score and CASPer score (for the schools that look at casper). Then your supplemental application (essays and ABS) are important for the schools that look at them too Good luck!

how do you mannage to study for two usmles and mccqe all the while handling medical school courses?
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Жыл бұрын
It was very difficult and not something that I'd advise in most cases. I was applying for residency at the same time as studying for step 1 - however this was the only way since my medical school follows the 3 year model and does not offer dedicated time for self study (we study through the summer each year). For step 2 studying now, I aimed to do about 3-4 hours per day for 2 months. I slept between 2-5 hours per night with the exception of weekends (I would sleep in on Saturdays in an effort to catch up). I'm glad it's over lol

Congrats on being done! I'll keep my fingers crossed for your score, but I'm sure you did great Step 1 was brutal for me too, but somehow it felt more manageable than step 2. Maybe because I was much busier studying in residency than back in med school.

the UWorld question bank, 2 NBME exams and free KZbin lectures. I'm not trying to get a competitive score since I've already matched into residency in Canada. 1) Keeps options open for the future - I don't want to be studying for these when I'm 40 and working as an attending 2) I want to get involved in med education and having a good understanding of the American exams and Canadian exams allows me to be better positioned to speak on both systems 3) Studying for the American exams has definitely made me a better doctor - no question about it. I feel like the last 2 months of studying have helped me get a better handle of some different pathology and approaches to common presentations in the ED and in my family practice

More UWorld questions, more NBME forms and KZbin video lectures. If you saw my first attempt, then you know that I really didn't study that much for the first attempt because many people had told me that it was similar to the Canadian exam. That was incorrect and I definitely recommend a different study plan ✅
