Simone should do the triple twisting double off beam just to spite the FIG. Like, "Okay, you keep your 0.1 and I'll add another Biles II to the COP."
@MD-7224 жыл бұрын
Which would _"spite the FIG"_ in what way...?
@captainbryce14 жыл бұрын
@@MD-722 Because the point of the FIG devaluing the Biles off beam was to discourage gymnasts from performing it. Simone upping the ante and doing a triple double off beam would be sticking it to the FIG and still get her another skill named after her.
@MD-7223 жыл бұрын
@@captainbryce1 People and this whole _"spite the FIG"_ narrative...If Biles gets 10 skills named after her, who do those skills belong to? Who decides their values? Who decides whether or not they even remain in the Code of Points? So to precisely whom would she be sticking what to? Exactly... So I'm sorry, but this narrative needs to die. More so than that not only did her dismount get valued properly, the undervaluation of elements to discourage tariff-bashing is hardly a new practice, it's been going on for years--with the tucked double front (the most difficult BB dismount) being valued at an F being one of the most prominent examples, yet where we never hear the outrage over that. People are under this impression that the valuation of the double-double dismount is some personal attack on Simone Biles, even though before she returned to competition the FIG gifted her in advance by introducing this nonsense B+F 0.2 connection bonus and keeping the full-in tuck dismount valued at a G--an element which she has abused the throughout her career. No other medal-contending balance beam worker relies on their dismount more than Simone Biles--which was first made unquestionably clear in the Rio 2016 EF, then again at the 2018 World Championships EF and somewhat more controversially clear in the Worlds 2014 EF. But this quad, so as to not just allow her to medal but possibly even win with a fall, said bonus was introduced. Especially as it was last quad when she first posted a video of herself attempting and landing a double-double dismount; clearly indicating she would debut it at some point in her career, as it was expected to have been awarded a J (before CV). But with its built-in 0.2 bonus a J _is_ its value this quad, so I personally don't see any cause for complaint. Which in turn ties in with the politics of the inflation of the value of the full-in. If the double tuck is a D and the double pike an E then both full-in versions should not be Gs, because the explicitly less difficult element receives a greater increase in value--0.3, while the pike gets 0.2. Therefore the full-in tuck should be an F and the Biles dismount an H (this quad). Because from 2006 up until now the full-in has remained a G even though by this quad (at the very least) it should have been devalued. Top balance beam workers have been using the full-in since the 80s, so it never should have been a G in the new COP and most certainly should not have remained one for this long. But to reiterate my previous point, who relies on that dismount the most? Meaning once again the FIG were gifting Biles; so much so that when her eponymous skill was valued properly, she and her fanbase's perceptions had become so distorted by the politics outlined above, none of them could even realise that. Because if Biles really wanted to count a proper G dismount in her programme, she should have used the full-in pike (like Catalina Ponor in 2017). The above said though, I'm not opposed to reasonable _jumps_ in progressions of start values (e.g. the DLO being an F on the floor), but CV also has to be taken into account. Because if this were last quad, I would support the Biles being an I. Then there's technical side. Where the full-in double and double-double are both very difficult (F) and extremely difficult (H) skills to perform, a bwd take-off and tucked body position are the easiest ways in which to perform acrobatic elements. Hence why even though we have the double-double, we haven't even seen a 3.5 twisting layout in training (to my knowledge). Or similarly on the FX how the triple-double in both MAG and WAG were successfully competed before the stretched quad full. So if Biles does compete the triple-double dismount (which would be an J unless it gets banned), she'd only be proving the FIG right for valuing the double-double as an H, because tucked skills (even when extremely difficult) are still easier to perform than elements in more difficult body positions with less flips and twists (e.g. the double layout dismount--which would probably get banned based on training videos alone, as even someone as short and powerful as Biles was nowhere near close enough to landing it safely. But if it were to be possible, it too would easily be worth a J). So based on all of the above, it's quite understandable why the FIG would just cite _"safety"_ as their reason for the Biles dismount's value--it's the easy way out! That, and they were allowing things to get out hand, so a foot was finally put down. But so far as Biles goes, she was lulled into a false sense of security by her coaches and USAG, only to then allow herself to remain there. The Code of Points is available to all, so proper analysis of it would have easily exposed the anomaly in the progression of balance beam dismount values and better prepared her for how the FIG might rate the double-double. So if she wants an I/J-value dismount, I'd suggest she attempt the double full-in tuck due to her proficiency and consistency at performing the full-in and the fact that it's a lot less likely to get banned by the FIG.

Can anyone tell me why a double piked yurchenko would have such a higher value than any other twisting version?
@joyfuljaj4 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing.
@captainbryce14 жыл бұрын
Two reasons: 1) Whenever skills are "overperformed", they are generally devalued, and when skills are less commonly performed their values are inflated relative to their difficulty. For example: way back in the 1996 CoP, a layout Yurchenko half was worth a 9.9, while a layout Yurchenko full was only worth a 9.8. This doesn't seem to make any sense as a Yurchenko full has an extra half twist. The excuse that the announcers offered was that the Yurchenko half was a "blind landing", but realistically that should have only made it equal in value to the Yurchenko full, not higher. However, the Yurchenko full was the "go-to" vault for almost every gymnast while very few had done the Yurchenko half at that point. Therefore it was overvalued to encourage more variety. In today's CoP, the Yurchenko half is worth a 4.2 while the Yurchenko full is a 4.6. So what happened? How did the one vault which was considered less difficult in the past suddenly become more difficult in the future? It's because everyone stopped doing the Yurchenko full and started doing Yurchenko halfs since it was easier and worth a tenth more. The FIG therefore changed the CoP to adjust to this. Today, multiple twisting vaults are so commonly performed that they are undervalued compared to the equivalent difficulty double flipping vaults. We ought to expect a double flipping vault to be overvalued as a result of this common theme. 2) The second reason is that double flipping somersaults are generally considered to be more dangerous and risky than twisting somersaults, so being slightly overvalued is somewhat justified. I think a rating of 6.8 is WAY overinflated and optimistic for a Yurchenko double pike. Realistically if we compare it to the handspring front double tuck (Produnova vault) which is worth 6.4, the Yurchenko double pike (which is a slightly more difficult body position, but an easier entry with a visible landing) should only be worth a 6.5 MAX (which is still higher than any other rated vault). The only reason to rate it higher than that would be because it's "new" and never been done before. However, I can also see the FIG devaluing it on the count of it being "too dangerous" (ala the Biles dismount on beam). So we really have no idea where the FIG would go with that vault if performed.

It scares me to see all those girls try those extremely difficult moves! You can clearly see that half of them just don't have enough power to jump high enough so that they'd make a clean landing (the pit with foam is lower than floor making it easy and safe to try new skills but what about in competition? They'll be landing on their heads/necks)...Simone is pretty much the only one who can jump high enough. MHO.
