I feel like if I had several hours (maybe a day) I could solve that first puzzle just through brute force calculation since there's a relatively limited number of variations given the remaining pieces and situation. That second puzzle, though, is something I don't know if I'd ever be able to solve. Too many possible movies that look like they're winning only to find out they're not because of some hard-to-see response, combined with a very counter-intuitive "computer-like" move to cap it off. Still, the logic is very pretty, just incredibly complex and way above my 1700 ELO paygrade.

Second one felt more like a "position" than a "puzzle", if you know what I mean. As Sam said, it's not the kind of thing you really figure out ahead of time step-by-step. You just keep reacting and trying to find the best move. (I did not find the best move each time, obviously). First one wasn't that bad. Just had to figure out which Queen check was right and why. There weren't that many options.
@JBHACKSAW
@JBHACKSAW 3 жыл бұрын
The main issue with the second puzzle highlights why it's difficult to translate puzzle expertise to the game. Black's counter play that saves the game is more difficult to find than White's attacking moves following black. When we are in a game, we are naturally biased to finding our own moves over finding opponents best moves

How do they rate puzzles? The first was quite doable. The second was insane.
@mychessnotebook8653
@mychessnotebook8653 3 жыл бұрын
I believe they rate puzzles just as if the puzzle and the solver are opponents in a game. If the solver solves it, then the puzzle loses, and its rating goes down. If the solver fails, then the puzzle wins, and its rating goes up. There is no person judging the difficulty of the puzzles. Sometimes puzzles with relatively easy solutions can have high ratings because a lot of solvers are too hasty and think they have it solved when they don't.

So in the 2nd puzzle, after 1.Nd6+, Black presumably has choices in where he moves his king - either to f8, d8, or (as discussed in the puzzle) e7. Also after 2. Nxe5, it is not clear why black is forced to take KxNd6.
@JamesColemanChess
@JamesColemanChess 3 жыл бұрын
That was pretty much explained in the vid. He has to go to e7 in order to be able to take on d6, otherwise white has got back most of his material, will pick the N on h1 up and even be material ahead while retaining an attack. Easiest to check with an engine though, the position is so abstract it defies verbal commentary. Suffice to say not playing Ke7 and Kxd6 is about -10

At 2:27, isn't it over ? If white moves pawn to g5 check, I only see 2 possible moves for black. King g7 and king h5. On king G7, you have rook f7, leaving the enemy king to go to h8 or g8. H8 is mate in 1 due to queen c8. G8 is mate in 2 with queen e6, queen c8. As for h5, you have g4 checkmate in 1

I don't know what the solution would be here, but a very human sequence of moves is g4+, worst move for white is then Kh6 which leads to a queen sac. Qg4+ looks good but the king slinks away by wandering to f2. g4+ is bad if Kh6 though since that leads to a queen sac followed by a not quite guaranteed rook+pawn checkmate. So I'm gonna say the best move is Qf5+, forcing Kh6 as the only legal response, followed by a rook sac on f6, recapturing with queen leading to check mate? On second thought that idea does not work either, that leaves Qf7+ as the only possible move left.
@The-Anathema

Well, I'm happy I actually solved the first puzzle from start posistion.. preferred Qf7+ and had saw the Kg4 idea. Second puzzle I've spent like an hour lol, saw all the lines going one move at a time ((btw 12:22 Nc6+ Kb6, a5# better, always mate with pawn!)) and found the correct move UP until 13:11... gg engine move. I considered ideas of enclosing the queen, but only to discard them because there was no way to either mate or win the queen. Such a long puzzle simply ending in a winning posistion with equal material is a bit disappointing!

Honestly I feel like Puzzles are surprisingly easy compared to actual games. Tactics might just be easier than Strategy but I paused the Video and managed to solve these puzzles on my own when I really have no business solving them as a weak hobby player.

Isn't the "Matein X move" critical information to solve a chess puzzle? Just not disclosing how many moves is required make things even harder .... Worse, some puzzles are considered 'solved' even if there's no mate, so the 'solved' criteria is kinda essential...
@adaelasm6467
@adaelasm6467 3 жыл бұрын
The point of doing tactics is to improve what you’d do in a real game, saying there’s mate in 4 makes it significantly easier as you can discard anything that doesn’t lead to mate by the 4th move
@literalghost929
@literalghost929 3 жыл бұрын
@@adaelasm6467 Ok so in 'tactics', if there's a mate in 4, but you find a mate in 6 or 10 moves, you've solved it successfully?
@adaelasm6467
@adaelasm6467 3 жыл бұрын
@@literalghost929 usually that will be considered an alternate solution and you still have to find the fastest one if it’s a “‘mate in X” puzzle
@literalghost929
@literalghost929 3 жыл бұрын
@@adaelasm6467 And how do you know if there's a fastest mate? If there's no fastest mate/win, you could be wasting your time looking for a fastest solution when you've already solved the problem ... And even worse, as I said, there are some puzzles where it's not even a mate, it's just a 'winning position' or material gain, so if you don't know what you're looking for, you might be wasting your time trying to find a mate in 3/4/5/6 moves, when none exist!

Doesn't Qf5+ Kh6 Kg4 g6 Qf6 Qb4 Qh4+ Kg7 Ra7+ with checkmate following by the Queen work?
@friedrichvolkmann
@friedrichvolkmann 3 жыл бұрын
Instead of Qb4 (or Rf2, which loses as well), Black has Qb7! from where the queen protects against Qf8# because the Qb7 can interpose on g7. Qf8+ Qg7 Qf4+ would be a nice mate if there weren't a pawn on e5. White needs to get rid of that pawn first with Qg5+ (instead of Qf8+) Kg7 Qxe5+ Kh6 Qg5+ Kg7 Qf6+, but then the black king no more goes to h6, but to g8. This entire line looks so close to winning for White, but actually it isn't.

@Tam-il1hc
@Tam-il1hc 3 жыл бұрын
I think it references a quote from a Shakespeare's play, and in this video he said "A horse, a horse. My kingdom for a check on the dark squares". The horse part has to do with the context of the play, and the kingdom part means he needs something so badly that he's willing to trade valuable things for it.

The right to castle is assumed in studies unless the oppositite is either explicitly mentioned, or implied by retro-analysis. There's still the dogma that every study needs to be derivable from the starting position of standard (i.e. non-fischerandom) games.
