I feel like if I had several hours (maybe a day) I could solve that first puzzle just through brute force calculation since there's a relatively limited number of variations given the remaining pieces and situation. That second puzzle, though, is something I don't know if I'd ever be able to solve. Too many possible movies that look like they're winning only to find out they're not because of some hard-to-see response, combined with a very counter-intuitive "computer-like" move to cap it off. Second one felt more like a "position" than a "puzzle", if you know what I mean. As Sam said, it's not the kind of thing you really figure out ahead of time step-by-step. You just keep reacting and trying to find the best move. (I did not find the best move each time, obviously). First one wasn't that bad. Just had to figure out which Queen check was right and why. There weren't that many options.
@JBHACKSAW3 жыл бұрын
The main issue with the second puzzle highlights why it's difficult to translate puzzle expertise to the game. Black's counter play that saves the game is more difficult to find than White's attacking moves following black. When we are in a game, we are naturally biased to finding our own moves over finding opponents best moves

How do they rate puzzles? The first was quite doable. The second was insane.
@mychessnotebook86533 жыл бұрын
I believe they rate puzzles just as if the puzzle and the solver are opponents in a game. If the solver solves it, then the puzzle loses, and its rating goes down. If the solver fails, then the puzzle wins, and its rating goes up. There is no person judging the difficulty of the puzzles. Sometimes puzzles with relatively easy solutions can have high ratings because a lot of solvers are too hasty and think they have it solved when they don't.

So in the 2nd puzzle, after 1.Nd6+, Black presumably has choices in where he moves his king - either to f8, d8, or (as discussed in the puzzle) e7. Also after 2. Nxe5, it is not clear why black is forced to take KxNd6.
@JamesColemanChess3 жыл бұрын
That was pretty much explained in the vid. He has to go to e7 in order to be able to take on d6, otherwise white has got back most of his material, will pick the N on h1 up and even be material ahead while retaining an attack. I don't know what the solution would be here, but a very human sequence of moves is g4+, worst move for white is then Kh6 which leads to a queen sac. Qg4+ looks good but the king slinks away by wandering to f2. g4+ is bad if Kh6 though since that leads to a queen sac followed by a not quite guaranteed rook+pawn checkmate. So I'm gonna say the best move is Qf5+, forcing Kh6 as the only legal response, followed by a rook sac on f6, recapturing with queen leading to check mate? On second thought that idea does not work either, that leaves Qf7+ as the only possible move left.
@The-Anathema Жыл бұрын
To elaborate the full sequence would be ... Qf7+, g6 Qxh7+, Kg5 Qxh4+, Kf5 Rxf6# No?

Qf5+ doesn't work because best response leads to a guaranteed draw, something I overlooked initially. (Qf5+, Kh6, Kg4, g6 ... leads to draw, the rook sac is by no means forced)

Can the second one even be considered a puzzle given the sheer number of possible moves?

Wait but isn’t the first one just: pawn g4 - king g5 - queen f5 - king h6 - queen h5?? Or am I missing something

should be Qf7+ Kh6 Kg4 Rh2 Rxf6+ gxf6 Qxf6# Black does not have to play Kg5.. can play g4+ Kh6 g5+ Kg6 Qxe5 Rd3+ Qg3 Qc3 Qxd3+ Qxd3+ Kg2 Qxa6 Kf2 Kxg5 Kf3 Qe6 Kf2 Kf4 Kg2 Qe2+ Kh1 Kf3 Kg1 Qg2#

0:45 Ummm……. Is part of the puzzle here also knowing white to play? Black to play? Game to draw? Who to win?

I got every puzzle correct in the first try except the last one!

I solved the first one, does it really mean my rating is 3950? The main difficulty is that it does have one non-forcing move.

Ahhhhhhh, I thought g4+ was the answer to the first puzzle. I didn't look close enough
