Almost every time I play Terraria I do a solo melee sword build. The only time that melee actually kind of sucks is on Master mode, mainly during pre-hard mode due to the severe lack of strong knockback or range options for swords. Edit: I just realized that the Starfury is a major exception, but it is far from easy to obtain.

No one told me you can break plantera's bulb, magic mirror back to spawn, go to your boss arena (your boss arena has to be completely made out of platforms only, no solid blocks) and plantera would only be able to move on the ground. And then you can just use your megashark with cholorophyte bullets and shoot below you.
