This is my favorite of Brian FitzGerald's videos. His videos keep me motivated to get my own QuickSilver. Flew it for the first time this year just yesterday.

That's excellent, Thomas! I got in quite a few hours this Summer in the MXL, too. About 5 years ago I bought a RANS S-12 and have been flying it a lot also. This last 5+ weeks I have been mostly grounded while I perform a "5 Year Rubber Change" on my RANS' Rotax 912UL. I'm not a very fast mechanic but I like to think I am very methodical and attentive to detail. So, it is taking me a lot of time. My Wife and I have also gone on a 3 day Anniversary trip and our Grandsons stayed with us on another 3 day occasion so, it's not like I have worked on the engine every day. Also, I had to wait on some parts about 4 times. When you do a project like this, there are always things that crop up that need attention that you didn't plan for at first.

Thanks, Jimmy. I have another 6 POV movies like that and many other movies you might like. There are more POVs to see here: www.fitzvideo.com/Pages/POVs.htm Please keep in mind that I don't always fly that low but I do stay at lower heights when shooting these POVs because it is more interesting by far. Particularly with the lenses on these small cameras, if you get more than 100' off the ground it seems like you are 1,000'+ feet and there is just not much to see. "Harper" was extraordinary in that I was given the low fog to climb through and that made the 6-800' AGL shots at the beginning super interesting. Thanks, Kyle! I'm glad you liked it. That was the first of my series of what I call POV movies. If you want to see some more like that, just key word "POV". I also put mucho effort into one called "Lil Prop - Big Trip" that you might like. It has no narration and is a 23 minute music video. It was shot single camera with intercuts from a cameraman on the ground. Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™ Brian FitzGerald - The Sky Surfer PS: I shot primary footage last week for another of these "stream of consciousness, Sky Safaris" with 7 cameras. This was through the magnificent Flint Hills of Kansas. Unfortunately one of them did not work. So I shot it again two days later and had trouble with TWO cameras. So I am still struggling internally as to whether I should shoot it again. I had to take all the camera mounts off the plane to go to a Fly-In last Saturday. Also, the weather is fixin' to change on me soon. I'll come up with something...

Excellent! It's a wonder to see this video, by an agronomist engineer like me. It was a great pleasure to see this video. To see the lands of Kansas, fly over the crops, large open areas, see the rivers, trees, farms, ah! Including the train, of course! I had the impression of feeling the smells of the plantations, the earth and the differences in the air temperatures. I flew in the region of the city of Sorriso in the north of the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil. There are many similarities between these regions. Thank you so much, Mr Brian FitzGerald.

Dear Mr. Barone, The pleasure is mine. I am gratified at your comments regarding this movie. While I have many more to show I would but suggest one more that I think you would enjoy. It is called "The Search for Mustang Valley". It will show you an area of prairie East of Ponca City, Oklahoma. Here you will see Oil and Cattle Fields and a topography somewhat different than what you have seen in Kansas. Also, the focus of the story is to show the herds of Mustangs our government supports to run wild on the plains. You can see it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYq1cqiuoKiXjdk I have always been intrigued with Brazil. I would like to visit it some time. One of my pastimes is to watch Mixed Martial Arts and Brazil has produced the best fighters in the world. What is your specialty in agronomy? A year ago I did my best to record the progression of a wheat crop in Kansas from the perspective of my Ultralight. The idea was to trace it from planting the seed through to harvest. The weather was not cooperative and I have yet to make a movie out of it. The area I flew through is around Wellington, Kansas which bills itself as "The Wheat Capital of The World" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington,_Kansas). I have seen wheat in that area that is absolutely breathtaking in scope and quality. Unfortunately that was not the case when I embarked on the movie project that year. I am thinking I must try this movie project again... Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™ Brian FitzGerald - The Sky Surfer

Charles Berry Dear Charles, Thanks for the positive reinforcement! These projects take an enormous amount of time with pretty much no compensation except kudos. I would like to fly a Pitts some time but most of my time has been in Ultralights after training in Cessna 150's, 172's and a few hours in a Piper 140. You sound like you are quite experienced. I would just recommend that you spend a goodly amount of time getting used to the extremely low speed and light wing loaded type of flying before doing some of the stuff I do in these movies. I'm not saying it's that tough but in winds it requires constant attention to airspeed and "automatic" reflexes for turbulence control. With regard to that, I have been reading "The Wright Brothers" by David McCullough. He includes personal observations The Brothers made that mirror things I see and feel when flying in the same flight regime. I would highly recommend the book. It is wonderful and gives me more appreciation for them even though they have always held a lofty position in my life regardless. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you transition to Ultralight Flying. My telephone number is on my website if you want to call as is my email address. Dear Mr. Mattison, I am overwhelmed with your generosity and appreciate your observations. These POV movies are very time consuming and require meticulous attention to detail to achieve a modicum of success. I think you would understand how many flights with cameras rolling that I had to scratch for any number of reasons - all to get something I would be proud to show off. Even at that, a couple of cameras died on me before the end of "Harper" but not enough to scratch the flight. God gave me enough to complete the project with the supreme addition of the young boy and his Grandfather showing up at the end. I'm glad you liked it. I also wrote this flight up on "Sky Surfing - The Flite Blog™". Here is the link to that angle of the same story: www.fitzvideo.com/skysurfing2/2014/08/07/the-harper-run/ You might also like some of my other POV movies (there are 6 more with another on the way...). I liked how you cross wires at an angle. When I learned to fly the quicksilver sport II, my intstructior taught us the same thing. If your engine craps out just before you get to the wire it's easier to alter your course (45 degree turn vs a full 90 degree turn).

You've got life sussed and I'd bet that everyone of us watching your 'work' is more than a little envious. If you'd have flown coast to coast non stop I'd still sit through it. Also, you're a great ambassador for the MXL, they ought to sign you up and give you a few perks, just to keep you on board :-) ( But yes.. I do know you don't do this for any reward). Would you buy the same machine if you were starting over? I wonder what else you might have considered. Keep doing things just the way you do them, we love it.

Thanks, Chris! But frankly it was just another day in the life of The Sky Surfer dancing the skies over The Great Plains of Kansas. I will admit there are moments when he seems to live a charmed life... Yes, I do promote the MXL a lot. For my purposes, it is hard to beat. Strong, well-designed, parts easy to obtain. Its maintenance is not technical and does not require exotic tools. It has a lot to recommend itself but the truth is that Quicksilvers are the only Ultralights I have ever flown. Guys tell me they are a little heavy in the roll axis but that's why The Sky Surfer has such bulging biceps... I like Kolb airplanes and also the Aerolite 103. Those would be the others I would try if I had some extra bucks. The Backyard Flyer impresses me also. I own a 70% complete T-Bird two seater with a 582. It has been stored in pieces in my garage and basement for about 7 years. The goal is to put it together in the next two years inside the soon-to-be-announced Sky Surfer Shack literally in construction right now! I'll post something about it on The Flite Blog™ before too long. Blue Skies & Tailwinds, Chris!

...A great video....I flew an Ercoupe for many years to the point where we flew as one unit...I had a real passion for flying close to the ground, even landing on the sandbars along the Fraser River...I found if you waved at the folks on the ground they were more likely to wave back than report you...I did a forced landing once under two sets of high tension power lines and my practiced low level flying certainly helped me through....I always wanted to try an ultra-light, but I'm over 6'6"...Through the 1970's I was a television news photographer, so have a library of 16mm and Super 8mm film of my adventures....The dihedral of your wings looks similar to the Ercoupe, which is 7 degrees, very stable......Saskatchewan is the Canadian province most like Kansas, and I like it there a lot...Anyway, I sure appreciate the memories your video brought back ( but you didn't fly under any bridges, yet ) haha ....I think I loved all the smells close to the ground the most, and buzzing trains flying lower than the tracks, lol.......John (west coast, Can.) ....

Dear John, Thanks for your great comments. I, too, was a cameraman but got into that about 10 years after you. They were phasing out 16mm and we were using the early 3/4" systems. I worked at KSNW in Wichita for a while before I started my own ad business. We had a couple TK 46 cams but then went whole hog into the JVC 2000's and then 2700's. When adding a light system with the battery belt I would have 70lbs+ of gear on. It was very interesting as a job and got me into making movies. In addition to the POV you have seen (of which I have 6 others here: www.fitzvideo.com/Pages/POVs.htm), I also have shot a load of documentaries featuring Classic Airplanes, Ultralights, Amateur Rockets and Muscle Cars. I loved your flight to Harper! I have belonged to EAA off and on and I really think the QuickSilver is my kind of flying, low and slow. Is the engine 2 or 4 cycle? My last name is Harper so that added to the interest. Also, I am an agriculturist and therefore very much identified with your flight path over crops and natural land features. I am still amazed that you can fly so low! Yet, you have the power to easily climb to surmount hedgerows or power lines! I like that you can use ground effect to your advantage! I can’t help liking your descriptions of the land and places you are flying over. I was born and grew up in eastern Montana and have driven as well as ridden the train across North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota and have always loved the different colors of grasses alone as well as crops! Thank you for your sensitivity to the very interesting Great Plains where I grew up!!

Dear Mr. Harper, I am very pleased with your comments on this piece. It was the first of a series of "POV" movies I have on my KZbin Channel. Due to the vagaries of KZbin, I can never be sure how people see my movies. So, I want you to know that I have about 6 of these "POV's" on my Channel and you can get there by going to this address: kzbin.info There you will find more of the same and a lot more. Another good way to see my stuff is to go directly to my website: www.fitzvideo.com/ From there you can get to Sky Surfing - The Flite Blog™ which features journalistic stories about my trips. You asked about the motor. It is a Rotax 503 DCI of about 48 HP. It is a 2 Stroke. It is one of the best motors they have made but it is no longer in production thanks to the Earth Worshipper's Global Warming Myth. Apparently, 2 strokes destroy the Antarctic... Anyway, please let your Buddies know about my website/blog/Channel and be prepared to see my newest production which will be released soon. It will be titled "Magic Time - Final Flight". Oh man!!! I just found your channel!!! This video has got to be the coolest damn thing I’ve ever seen! I’m putting the finishing touches on a Goat 4 glider I built over the last 3 years in my spare time:). My glider will launch with either winch towing aero towing with a dragonfly or comparable, or ridge launch. I’m supposed to be working on the rig for my trailer to carry the glider, but I can’t stop watching this video!!! This is fascinating!!! If I’m ever in Kansas I will look you up, and maybe you could tow me up lol! Anyways fantastic video. I can’t wait to see what other ones you have! God bless!

When I first saw the link for this video a few months, I just about clicked on it right away - that was until I saw the length down in the corner. Assuming that it was just another long boring cross country ultralight trip I gave it a pass. Then, earlier today, I stumbled upon the 'Lil Prop - Big Trip' video and was blown away by the quality of it. When I saw that this video was made by you as well, I couldn't click on it fast enough. I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed. I sat mesmerized for the full 51 minutes and still felt that it was too short. Thank you so much for posting. :-)

Thanks, Dirk! I was just talking to my Son Jack about the effort I put into filtering the noise from the audio so you can hear the propeller in these POV movies. Regarding the "hypnotising", I was telling him that on long Sky Safaris the "Harley-Like" sound of the prop has nearly lulled me to sleep. ***** You are most welcome Brian, I stayed up till 3am watching your videos, I can't believe how low you fly. Already subscribed, it has inspired me to take up the sport. I did freefall parachuting, but UL makes me feel like you can endlessly fall without falling and enjoy the altitude...

Thanks again, Jim. I am gratified to hear you are interested in flying ultralights. I feel obligated whenever this "low flying" comment comes up to advise you that I don't always fly that low. Yesterday I went up for an hour and stayed between 150' and 600' AGL for the entire flight. The view at those altitudes is quite excellent. Flying low is a joy but takes more skill and has the negative of limiting your landing sites should the engine quit. Even though and engine out landing can be made around 20 mph, you could get hurt bad if you land amongst boulders or up in a tree. I make the case for the low flying when shooting movies because it is FAR more interesting from that aspect than to stay at 150' and above. Frankly, though, it is safer, just as fun and advisable to stay above 100' AGL when generally Fun Flying. Please keep me posted on your progress. Air-TechInc of Louisiana is a good place to get a Quicksilver. (that is an unsolicited promo but tell 'em The Sky Surfer sent you anyway...) Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™ Brian - The Sky Surfer

@BrianFitzGerald-TheSkySurfer

Dear Gregory, I am glad to hear you will be flying. I believe that Ultralight Flying is the most pure aviation experience you can attain. It can be very rewarding but I would like you to do me a favor... Please don't copy the "low level, up over the trees, down the river" stuff you saw me doing in The Harper Run until you have a couple of hundred hours in type. When I am out for a local flight I don't generally get below 300' to 500' AGL. Sure, it's fun to fly in ground effect but you owe yourself some time to really get used to the machine and to become competent in it so that you don't unintentionally smack the ground and break something. These planes are very susceptible to the wind currents and over time you can feel the air in such a way that you know when to add a little power when necessary and when to ease back on the stick at the right moment. It is all HUGE FUN but only when you don't bust your stuff up. Be honest with yourself and strive for excellence in your control of the machine so that you become "one with it". I know that sounds hokey and "Star Wars" but it is a real thing. When you get so that you are "not thinking" about every correction with your stick and rudder movements, then you are getting to the right place. It will take some time so be patient. Be a tough judge on yourself - your turn coordination, maintaining altitude in turns - all your pilotage. When you fly mere feet above the surface those things are VERY important. Maintenance is critical, too. All that being said, you are entering a great phase in your life! Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™ The Sky Surfer - Brian FitzGerald

+DEGBOT I do it once in a while but don't make a habit of it. Remember... This is a movie. I'm trying to make it interesting but I'm no dare devil. +Brian FitzGerald Another question if you don't mind. How many hours have you put on your 2 stroke without overhaul?
@BrianFitzGerald-TheSkySurfer
@BrianFitzGerald-TheSkySurfer 8 жыл бұрын
+Aviator168 Dear Aviator, The factory (Rotax) wants you to overhaul these motors at 300 hours and that is what I do. I am running on my 1st overhaul of this 503 done by Rotax Rick of Florida (Faircopters@aol.com). I have enough hours left on this overhaul for this coming season so I will be sending it to him this Fall. Some guys say they "can get" 800 to 1,000 hours between overhauls. That's not my plan. I see no cost savings in waiting until a motor fails to do an overhaul (if that's what they are doing). I think if guys in the Ultralight sport adopt the methods used by N Numbered planes they will have much more fun and less hassle. I do an annual inspection every year AND change out the "wear" parts like plugs, wires, caps, fuel hoses, hinge bolts, tire tubes, drive belts, etc. You need to take a responsible attitude to the sport. This is NOT a snowmobile that you can throw in the back of a pickup if the motor quits somewhere. I don't think I need to elaborate beyond that... Our big problem for the coming years is that Rotax doesn't make our 337, 447 or 503 motors any more. Quicksilver is experimenting with the Hirth line so we will see how that works out. For now there are lots of Rotax motors around and parts are still available. Maybe electric drive trains will become viable in the next few years... Please let me know if I can help with anything else. Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™ BF - The Sky Surfer
