I always use that chord and would call it G#add9 in first inversion, but like you said, it's all how you personally hear it.

yeah i kinda always call chords by the most vague way because in my mind the rest of the extensions are implied. I dont think id ever a call something add9 instead of calling it just a major chord. But im an asshole and would assume you'd hear the 9th yourself
