We've seen other pitchers have 90 inning stretches of dominance like he had that season. The difference is those pitchers did so as just a part of a full season, so their total numbers don't look as good. Pedro Martinez in 2000 started the year with a 0.99 ERA through his first 91 innings. deGrom had a 1.08 ERA in 92 innings in 2021. The difference is Pedro pitched 217 total innings and his ERA stabilized to 1.70. Other pitchers have also had stretches of 80-100 innings that were better than deGrom's 2021, they just actually finished their seasons and had the expected regression to merely incredible seasons instead of impossible. To suggest that deGrom could have maintained that ERA for another 100+ innings that year is wishful thinking.

While I certainly advocate for players like the de Grom who had tremendous prime stats, longevity seems to become a dirty word in modern MLB Hall of Fame analysis. A great example of a player like Eddie Murray who is continually undervalued because of the length of his career, and consistency of play, as he may have been the most consistently high performer of all time, yet is far down on the list of all time greats. The talent, athleticism and mental maturity it takes to consistently put up All-Star level performances year after year is beyond rare and speaks to levels of professionalism a maturity that few professional athletes ever attain.

As a die hard Mets fan, big time baseball guy as well, Jacob Degrom is not only my favorite Met of all time, but easily my favorite athlete of all time. From the pure dominance on the mound to how humble he is in both victory and defeat, hes truly one of a kind. It's sad he hasn't been able to stay healthy in recent years, but he easily had one of the most dominant stretches in MLB history. As he gets older there is no lie, the clock is ticking. However, it's clear this guy is insanely intelligent when it comes to knowing how to get better and he works his ass off. I hope he finds his way back to NY, man that would be awesome. Great Video !!!!

I've been saying that DeGroms prime was way too short to consider him the best pitcher of his time, let alone an all-timer. DeGrom at his peak was amazing don't get me wrong. IMO, today's starting pitchers pitch less innings then past pitchers because of the rise of analytics that has given the SP's more confidence that they can throw more pitches with them throwing with their top velocity. Problem is, that's relievers do, but they pitch on a much different schedule that's much more flexible and often. i think they starting pitches are pitching too hard in too many pitches and are blowing out their arm. Throwing gas then waiting another 4 other starts before you're up again can't be great for someone's arm. I also think today's pitching coaches coach velocity, velocity, and more velocity when the greg maddux type of way of "hitting their spots" has been underutilized. You don't need to throw triple digits when you can have great arm movement and hitting the spots you want. Then a 90 mph fastball and 78 mph changeup can be unhittable when thrown the right way and that will create a dependable pitcher that won't be blowing out their arms like these youngins currently. EDIT: 24:57 lol i'm writing this and video just brought up same point!
