My grandfather had a bird net on his cherry tree when I was a kid. My brothers and I were the bird rescuers. Climbed all the way up to free the lil guys.

Use tulle instead of bird netting. Birds don't get caught in it, you can get a massive roll cheap that will last a super long time and you can cover larger areas than the bag. Really good too for greens to prevent cabbage moths, etc.

My blueberry bush is planted in the ground and it's large and loaded with berries. Every I neglect to cover it and every year the birds eat them all, I probably only get 2 or 3 for myself. 😆

I'm glad I found this channel...I follow you on your other channel...I am thinking of trying to grow my own vegetables...I want to start small maybe with bell peppers. I live in a apartment and I have a very small side area so I would have to grow in containers. Please do a video tutorial on how to get started with success. I really trust your insight on so many things that's why I sought out any channels you had. Thank you for the time and honest knowledge.

for those that are curious if you can get larger netting to cover a larger area (or multiple plants at once) for the same reason, you can also buy garden netting like this in large sheets, not bags. you just cant cinch it to the plant if you're trying to protect a single plant unless you cut it to size. you can even get kits with arches (or make your own with tall garden stakes/pvc pipes) to keep them off the plants (for plants that might be a little less hardy than something like a blueberry bush). id just get whatever you need for your individual needs tho, and these bags are great if its just for single plants like this. they keep the bugs off too, not just birds!

As soon as I clicked on this video, I thought "Hum, I'd love to grow container blueberries." I've never grown ANYTHING outside because there are bugs out there. Then, you talked about growing blueberries. I hadn't thought about birds. Using netting bags would be great for me as I don't want to share blueberries. Absolutely great video. Thanks so much Ms. Pam. (Oh, love your fried chicken recipe on the other channel.)

I also grow 100% in containers and usually do ok once I moved everything up to my porch. Although, we got I. Trouble for feeding birds, so I've created a privacy area but, still figuring it out. I'm allergic to bees so I have to be careful... I crocheted a fake hive 😂 but I think these bags would be perfect .Zone 6, Buffalo.

Pam, I see a strip of bare ground along your back fence. What you can do is use 5 gallon food safe pails and make container gardens sitting in front of the back fence for watermelons, pumpkins or squash that can trail along the bare ground. I recommend 'Lady Godiva' pumpkin ($1.98 package of seeds/Wal*Mart) which produces hull less pepino seeds at 1 lbs. worth/seeds and 12 - 15 fruits/plant. Pumpkin seeds cost $5.00/pound and these are hull less. The pumpkin flesh isn't worth using and can be fed to pigs or composted. One ounce of pepino seeds is 163 calories and 8.5 grams/protein.

So glad I found your channel! Here in northeast PA I grow everything in containers, away from the deer, raccoons, bears, chipmunks, squirrels, etc. It is a constant battle to protect my plants when they are on the ground (our soil is layers of rock so building a fence is impossible) but having them in containers on my deck or porch means I can harvest before the critters do!

Another option is using fabric tulle (ebay has it for about $10 for a 54" x 40 YARD bolt. Not only do the birds stay away, but chipmunks squirrels etc. They dont like the "feel" of it as they get snagged on it (but not really tangled)

I have a bird sanctuary behind me so I gave up on those. This year they have, I mean I have 😂 strawberries.
