Little update: my coworker informed me that he didn’t get paid at all. He went to the hostel today to ask for his payment and the manager replied that he paid me the entire salary and that we should split it. However, I got paid $160, when it should’ve been $250 per person. I will contact the fair work commission here in Australia now and keep you guys updated!

I know the hostel she worked at because I had a trial there too. It’s called Reef Palms and it’s located in Cairns and is rated 3 stars. The way they treat their staff and underpay you is beyond words.

I stayed at Castaways Cairns in 2017 and they really looked after their backpackers tourist wise and workwise and showed forth the kindhearted Aussie spirit. Sounds like you need to relocate to a backpackers run by a genuine Aussie heart. 💜

theyre being used as slave labor basically down here, if our government want to put requirements of x amount of hours or time spent working in rural areas then they need to have something additional on the regulation side to protect these workers. not just rely on fair work australia who are already inundated with work.

I am an elderly Australian man (75) who left Australia 16 years ago and retired in Thailand. I also had a few struggles when I started work as a teenager, but nevertheless employers were generally fair, honest, and gave me good treatment. I did not really start making money until I became self-employed at 28. It breaks my heart to see what the country has become. There is no way I would want to be a young worker there right now. It is by no means the worst place to be, but unfortunately as a backpacker you have no leverage at all and are disposable. The older Australian manners and customs have broken down completely. When I occasionally return I find so many people rude and deliberately unpleasant. In my addition the government has developed a rip off attitude and charges through the nose for every service or document. I do wish you well but I understand you have to patient and determined to navigate the current situation. I am not going back, but of course I am now financially comfortable, and not just because I live in Thailand. All best wishes. I hope the situation eventually comes right. Australia was something of a paradise 30 years ago and more, but those days are long gone.

The minimum wage is 24$ an hour. He's paying you nothing and paying illegally. There's a website called fair work commission that you can basically dob these people in and they will get fined for not paying their workers properly.

I did the working holiday in 2019 and experienced similar to you. I spent one month in Cairns (after 3 months in Sydney), gave up, took a bus down to Brissy and Sydney again and after 6 months total in Oz I simply left. It was way too difficult, competitive, crappy pay and crappy people to make me stay. I got what I wanted from it but the desperation was real and a lot of backpackers were scrambling to find anything. I heard 10 years ago it was similar. Australia is not the golden, promised country a lot of people make it out to be.

I'm an Australian who worked as a seasonal fruit-picker. The reason the government issues work visas is to provide employers with cheap compliant labour for jobs that most Austalians won't take because of the low pay and squalid conditions. Innocent backpacker labour was one of a number of reasons why we had no bargaining power due to labour being kept over supplied.

But we have a a history from first colonisation of hard manusl labour and most of the Australians I saw worked hard and plenty of others were lining up trying to get work. Getting a job was no easy thing. At worst I spent months travelling and applying for harvesting jobs. Had enough of immigrants calling Australians work shy. The aim of work visas was to oversupply labour to growers or get labour into subsistence jobs that were completely sub-standard to normal Australian rights and expectations.

I was born and have lived in Perth my whole life. I've worked a bunch of different jobs... payroll officer, charity call centre, conceirge at a 5 star hotel, bookshop etc. Only **one** job has paid me fairly which was my payroll job at the Dept of Education (because it's a government job) but that was a short contract. Every other job I've had here exploited me, paid me way less than minimum wage, even on casual rates. Some workplaces did not even bother paying me! I have a disability and it's difficult enough just getting a call back let alone a job, but I've lost faith in the businesses here-- management all seem to follow the same shady practises :( I feel awful for you, and I'm sad you had to have such a shitty first trial job :( I hope you find your dream job one day

I‘m so sorry to hear that! :( it’s shocking how this problem exists in so many developed countries and that way too many people have to experience this. But I found it especially challenging in Australia. In Germany, even with mass immigration, it’s relatively easy to find a part time job at a cafe or as a waiter in a restaurant. Doesn’t necessarily mean you get treated nicely or paid enough but at least you don’t have to fight for a job at subway 😭 but I‘m surprised to hear that even Aussies have that issue :( hope you found a job that makes you truly happy now! 💕

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience in Cairns. It is really challenging to find a job, and very discouraging going door to door and dealing with rejection :( Some bad employers know they can take advantage of us because we have the limitation of having to satisfy the 88 days. Lots of my friends came here without any hospo experience, and it usually took about a month for them to find a job. So, keep it up, Begiii! @@Begibou If you have a record of every hour you were underpaid that is in some way acknowledged by the employer, you will be back paid and they will be in trouble. If you do not, don't jump back on here and claim victim, you were complacent and less experienced with that fraudulent employment.

Since you are already working in hospitality in regional areas, you should consider doing FIFO as as a utilities, working on mine sites located in regional areas. I work on a mine site and often see foreign workers (probably backpackers, as they usually speaking European languages) working utilities roles. The way it works is, the company will fly you out to the mine site, where you work for one/two weeks straight, and fly you back to the city to rest for one/two weeks, depending on the roster. All flights, accommodation and meals are provided. There are facilities provided (gym, pub, recreational facilities, swimming pool, etc, depending on the site). These jobs are more abundant in WA, where most mines are located, than in QLD, and are usually very remote (in the middle of the desert, far from any cities or towns), so should qualify for the regional work that your visas require to stay. Utilities roles can be as housekeeping, cleaners, kitchen hands, dining room attendants, pub staff (RSA required), or admin roles. The pay is more consistent and around $35 or more per hour + penalties, and you get to enjoy your week off in the city doing whatever. The downsides: You will be away for the two weeks, working 11 or 12 hours a shift, either day or night, every day for the whole swing, so it's not for everybody. You do not leave the camp for the duration of your swing, so you don't get to visit towns or travel outside whilst you are there or go out to shop, all facilities are provided You cannot cook in you room due to the regulations, as food is already provided The environment may be hot and dry and you may be working outdoors the entire day Can be isolating as you are far from the city, but if you are an introvert like myself, that should not be an issue. Not every job will allow for working holiday visas, as many require pr or other, and an Australian drivers license may be required As a woman, there are some reports of SA on sites, but safety has improved in recent years from government initiatives, and there are CCTV cameras everywhere now Internet is provided, but mobile reception may be limited, you will likely need to be on the telstra network You should google "fifo utilities" or check on seek, as these roles are often posted there if this interests you. The big ones are Sodexo (French company), ISS, ESS/Compass group www.getyourvisa.com.au/blog/fifo-and-working-holiday-visa/

Omg this is making my blood boil. So sorry U had to experience this in our beautiful country. U can tell by his voice, his accent, he isn't a true Aussie doing the right thing. He's taking advantage of desperate young people. I live in brisbane and I can honestly say there's industries crying out for people. Idk what your situation is but if you able to do a short course carers and nurses are desperately needed. We have alot at work coming from overseas now doing short courses to get your foot in the door and plentiful of work available. Sorry to hear about your experience. I can tell you that there are very strict workplace laws in Australia & also minimum wages. I helped many backpackers when I was younger understanding their rights at work. You could talk to the manager about the Dept. Industrial Relations & ask why you weren’t asked to sign a Tax File Declaration. It’s all part of the process of getting work here however it also covers you for Superannuation, which you can cash out when you leave Australia, and also any injury you may suffer. I’ve worked for many managers like this & I would say that sometimes they ‘prey’ on Backpackers so good on you for having a voice. I understand you may just want cash in hand. If he can’t pay minimum wage which would roughly be $25/hr at a guess then he shouldn’t be in business, it’s not your fault. Good Luck & there are actually some really nice employers out there.

Paying $7 for a room is crazy stuff. For casuals here in gold coast you could easily find a job in hospo literally very easily and the minimum casual rate is $29 per hour as a waitress. I feel sad for you, you are such a kind person.

The 2024 *minimum* legal wage in Australia for an adult (even for foreign students) is around $25+ per hour -- not sure of the exact rate, but it is at least around that mark. Anything less is legal abuse and the employer is subject to legal repercussions for such treatment, This is illegal abuse. If they cannot manage their business and pay their employees, then they are in violation of Australian business law

We have backpackers doing seasonal farm work for us. Most have been brilliant workers and have been well accepted by the owners and staff. They are provided accommodation. It was free accommodation up until 2 seasons back when the couple staying in it left the place untidy, now the backpackers pay a small rent and inspections are done fortnightly. Some ruin it for others. One backpacker thought it'd be a good idea not to work because as he saw it, he was on a holiday, he was sacked. We don't exploit our backpackers, they are well looked after. We want their experience with us to be fun yet productive. It's hard work but they cope. There is one complaint though. With French backpackers, if they finish the job they're doing they do not have the initiative to get onto something else, they'll just sit down and wait for someone to get them going again. As for the backpackers in general, we enjoy their participation. They tell stories and we share the Aussie way of life ... and another thing I must mention, be it you're a backpacker, please don't try and push your views about world politics onto us. It won't go down very well.

I literally got paid $11 per hour in an Indian restaurant on the Gold Coast when I started my journey in Australia in 2015. And well, that prompted me to become a social worker to advocate for the rights of the minority here and here I am now, still in Australia as a qualified social worker... I have got my PR and on my way to get a citizenship.

I felt so hopeless at times and imagined my flight back to Germany, but in the end it worked out for me and I’m sure it will work out for you! just came across your vlog, and I felt for you. I too came across such bad managers earlier, it's sometimes toxic. Finally, I got a beautiful couple from the farmland - i did lot of help in their farm, food was free during my stay there, very generous couple. But, 15$ per hour very low here, you should be paid at least 24. But, I get - I have been in such situations, it's before they officially give you work. The country seriously needs labour, and when people are good - they make your day. Stay strong, if possible we could catchup sometime for a cuppa coffee 😃. take care, and have a great day ahead.

It's a shame you can't get work in a big city because that's where the majority of work is. dodgy business practices, one of the best things you can do is mention that maybe the tax department should be contacted, i am sure you would love them to come and audit your books. the look on their face will say it all. is there any chance of working for a labour hire company? at least then they pay you as the client pays them even more. it will be casual employment though. there is a fair chance that potential employers where you are looking for work have been burnt from employing backpackers before in the past as well. when i was young i moved to melbourne and was finding it hard to get a job the main reason was my age 22. a lot of interviews stated they werent a fan of hiring young people like myself because we had a reputation of taking sick days on mondays and fridays because of going out partying on the weekends. and that they had a business that required reliable workers that turned up, not worked 9 day fortnights.

I'll give you all a bit of advice, Australian born to Italian migrant parents. Most Australians are very hard workers in labour jobs, don't expect it to be easy here but if you want good-paying jobs stay away from from hospitality and farms, look in mining towns. Sometimes I work away, which means going to quite small remote & rural towns. Recently went to one place and the local pub was awesome. It was half ran by backpackers at the front bar and the restaurant - I swear I had the best customer service experience there for a long time. Even compared to more expensive restaurants where you would expect a better service. It’s important to be kind and patient to hospitality staff, even when their first language isn’t English and they haven’t done the job before. I was very impressed. Thinking about it, even in FNQ there are a lot of backpackers in hospitality and most of them do a great job and are very friendly. Just sharing my experiences.

I have two university degrees, I've been in the defense forces, worked in the finance sector and worked multiple jobs in freight, labour, and have multiple tickets, and I still come second to our migrant population.. Not the migrants fault, it's just that there's too many people and they're looking for the cheapest labour they can find.

@@Begibou No, your points are very valid and I wished there were more backpackers and travelers working in Australia. The problem is that our government doesn't preserve what we have. They instead focus on their term only by meeting short term goals and destroying the country and wellbeing of it's citizens (and travelers) in the process. I am born and bred Australian but I am furious about how we are treated. I can certainly feel what you are feeling and I know it's disheartening. You should try recruiting agencies. At least you will get paid better than $7.

I think any supervisor should ask that question. Would I be happy to do this job? Can I do this job? WouldI be happy for my own family to work like this? It is hard work running a small business in Australia and in fact many go bust. Unfortunately there are people that try to make a profit living on the edges, getting the cheapest possible labour, below minimum standards, and being manipulative and abusive to make that work. There are lots of places in Australia where there is more demand for entry level jobs and backpackers can pick and choose, but watch out for abusive situations especially in remote places. Large regional mining towns would be a good bet. Mt Isa, Kalgoorlie etc. Go there, choose something you like, save your money and then go to Cairns and put your feet up. The resort towns are expensive, seasonal and much more fun to be a holiday maker than a worker.

Most of the people I know who were doing WHV were doing farm work for 3 months for the 1 yr extension. Alot of them said they enjoyed it and met alot of friends. Might be something to consider.

Sorry to break it to you, where you’re asked “can you make a coffee?” or “can you carry 3 plates?”, there is nothing wrong with that. Business owners don’t have time to deal with BS and training people… unless you’d like to earn less whilst being trained. Branch out to other types of employment. Try retail or work with whatever skills you have.

They could argue they had a bad day or genuinely inundated with liars and shit applicants however in no circumstance is it an excuse to speak to a potential applicant like that. Any half decent cafe operator affords themselves the time to train someone. If they're looking for their 'perfect' candidate, they'll be looking for a looong time.

With all this work and such very little pay, why are you choosing a working holiday visa in Australia when you could've just saved up money for a normal holiday and experienced Australia in the best possible way you could? Is the working holiday visa a way to get a permanent visa? Im not sure.

It’s the quickest and easiest way to get into Australia and allows you to stay up to 3 years with no conditions other than working in certain industries. Prior to coming I wasn’t sure how long I was gonna stay which made this visa type ideal since it provides flexibility. I don’t think I would’ve came far with just doing a holiday without any income on the side. But to be honest with you, the media has done a great job at romanticizing a working holiday in Australia, which I also fell for. It is very well known in Germany and a lot of young people do it to gain life experience and explore a new culture. I wasn’t aware of the tough conditions in some of the industries and the competitive job market. I am aware now and handle things accordingly. It’s a great way to enter and explore Australia from a more local perspective and goes beyond being a tourist

Best 2-cent advice I can give to you when going looking for a job is just think about what you can do for the business and focus on that. Your application journey seems to be all about you first.
