Devils fan here… I think it’s a good possibility that it’s not necessarily more money he is looking for. It says he wants a 2 year deal. He may just see the writing on the wall with the rangers for the next few years and doesn’t want to get locked into a team that might not be nearly as good on a few years with cap issues and or key Ayer’s aging out.

Rangers are in a bad spot with this one. Sign what Igor wants or become irrelevant. Same situation as with Swayman. I don't blame Igor either, he's a future hall of famer and should earn that kind of money. But paying that kind of money to one guy will not win you any cups (hopefully Oilers can prove me wrong this year). Honestly the low salary cap is to blame if you ask me.

I think Igor is keenly aware of New York never managing to put a cup winning team around Lundqvist during his tenure and it seems like he doesn’t wanna get locked down on a bulky contract that would be difficult to move if he wanted out. Dudes only 28 and an 11x8 would pretty much guarantee he’s not leaving New York for the entirety of his prime playing years.
@ColonizerChan2 ай бұрын

Sometimes I wonder if GMs ever ask the question of what else can we do with 11-12m we are about to spend on this player and how much better is he than the next guy in line or a guy we can get in FA for half the price. Especially at goalie which has been proven on many occasions that you don't need a lights out goalie to win it all.
@michaelbecker24352 ай бұрын
@@brianlb78 well for my money I'd rather pay Igor his 12 and never pay guys like mccry and Matthews 14-16 million. Igor literally carries the rags through the playoffs mccry and Matthews just drag the team down
@brianlb782 ай бұрын
@@michaelbecker2435 But that wasn't my comment. Would you rather have Igor or two other high quality players for a similar price. So for example say Robert Thomas or Nick Suzuki and Jordan Binnington, Thatcher Demko, or Adin Hill. The first two are nearly point per game centers who are also very good defensively, the goalies while not as good as Igor are definitely good enough to go deep into the playoffs. Igor might be better than them but is he twice as good which is what he is suggesting by his contract. I'd take the center and one of the goalies over Igor. I'm not a GM obviously but that's how I'd look at these types of big deals for any player. I'd say to myself why spend 12-14m on one guy when I can get two or maybe 3 very good players who combined will put up better stats than that one player.
@michaelbecker24352 ай бұрын
@@brianlb78 depends on the team around me and how far I want the team to go. at this point regular season means little so I'm going playoffs/cup. statically speaking the rags (as a team) tend to slack off in the playoffs, energy slows, defense dies and Igor keeps them in. so if I'm looking for a goalie who can go and carry a lagging team than yeah I'm gonna pay Igor. if I have a team who is accurate in shooting and can play shut down hockey ie Vegas didn't bite on Florida's antagonizing style than sure two for one.
@liammitchell2540Ай бұрын
@@michaelbecker2435I’m assuming you’re referring to McDavid as McCry and I’m genuinely confused how he “drags his team down”. He had 42 points last playoffs, the only dragging he did was dragging a team with an underdeveloped fringe starter and no bottom 4 D to game 7 of the cup finals. Which is further than Shesterkin has ever made it.

I have read that Igor is not looking to commit that much term to NY, he was actually talking about a 2 year deal which gives him an out if he loses confidence in the NYR project. if he commits to an 8 year max term contract, he could find himself stuck in another NYR rebuild and be too expensive to trade and if NYR wins a Cup during that time or is still able to make another run, he can look for another contract at even better value. It's not just about the AAv for Igor, he wants to be able to control his destiny.
@jimmyhockey2 ай бұрын
Maybe, I can’t imagine that’s the reason though. Players usually want the security on their deals, especially when you have kids and want to keep them in one place
@alexisvezina27922 ай бұрын
I feel like he is going for at least a 100mil contract over 8 years which to me seems perfectly reasonable for his value and what he brings to the team, but also what he would bring overall to any other team that could sign him
@severed1112 ай бұрын
Not good to be over-greedy. You'll have to see Price stop getting paid (2 more years) at 10.5mil for teams to consider anything higher than Bobrovsky's salary, not to mention....Bobrovdky looked like he didn't deserve that crazy contract and was pulling a Bryzgalov for a while at the end of his tenure with Philly then in Columbus, who at the time had the best lineups they ever had and made the playoffs twice in a row (at least), he vindicated himself from his detractors in 22-23 when getting to the SC final when they weren't even really supposed to make the playoffs, but had an insane March/April with just a couple losses/OT losses, winning 15/16 out of their 19 last games or so (numbers not precise right now, will correct later, but it's as close that it got that I can recall) and then made it to the SC final, didn't win, and Lyon had a few games in there, but if goalies want to get paid more and consider themselves equal to say baseball pitchers in importance, they'll have to wait for Bobrovsky's and Price's contract to end, maybe Bob will still play a few years when that contract is over, but I think he will become one of those great aging but good enough to be paid 2-3 million backups. As the salary cap will get close to 100 milion per team soon, it could become accepted that in about half the league the most paid player is the goalie, but I think that would have been more fitting during the dead puck era, where 1A goalies were being paid the salary of a 1st/2nd liner very often, now it's not rare for some choice goalies to be paid third or fourth line salaries, but it's often those who have yet to have won a cup. When a goalie wins a cup, they usually get a huge contract in return, ask Vasilevsky.

@@jimmyhockey Yes of course, if owners are going to price gouge their fans, then a lot of that money should be going to the players, that's why the salary cap is such a hinderance to the game because players can't be compensated properly, and get a decent shot at winning championships. that's why I usually just checkout of contract disputes because I can't stomach watching people fight over a couple extra million dollars when the average hockey fan can't afford tickets anymore.
