As a big time Wings fan. I think this change to the head coach has already started to show improvement in the team. As a fan, with only a fans eye to the game. Always "next year" for the Wings. It's inconceivable how a GM takes a decent 2023 team, makes a bunch of trades and changes, then ends up with a 2024 team that's not as good. Why on earth did they trade Walman???? He was a good D man, worked well with Seider, and was a good goal scorer to boot. Just makes no sense to me, and it looks like I'm not the only one throwing shade on the "Yzerman Plan". Frankly, I don't think he has a plan.

Nobody talks about the one glaring problem with this team: Not one power forward. The top 6 wingers are all the same player: undersized, soft skill. Equally problematic is Yzerman’s (or the pro scouts) failure at filling the 2C position. He signed Copp for it after having an outlier offensive yr after being a career checking, 3C. Then after that failure became apparent to him, he does the exact same thing with Compher. A career checking 3C who had an outlier offensive yr. MAYBE if Wings had a McDavid as the 1C, that could work. But Larkin him self probably isn’t a 1C. Also, Having natural centers in your top 9 is a game changer. Look at the FL Panthers. Their top 3 lines, 7/9 of those players are natural centers. Barkov, Verhagee, Reinhart, Rodrigues, Bennett, Lundell, Luostereien. And 3 of them could play 1C and the rest of them could play 2C. And this list doesn’t include Jesper Boqvist, (center) who’s been playing 3rd line when Samsoskevic isn’t. Now look at Wings center depth. Kasper is the only hope after Larkin. You can take a center and move him to wing anytime, reverse doesn’t work. Kane, Debrincat, Raymond= all same player. Berggren developing to also be the same. Atleast Fabbri was a natural center. Then you have the endlessly frustrating player to watch in Rasmussen. Drafted to be a 1C, clearly not it, that’s ok, how about a power forward? That requires playing like a “junkyard dog” after a bone. He has the size for it. Skill too. But not the drive. It’s frustrating. And none of this addresses Stevie’s horrible management of building a d core. His decisions last offseason were atrocious. Doesn’t re-sign Ghost, ok that’s fine, but then ships Walman out WITH a pick for nothing?! !?. The guy played on your top pair for half the season. Still young enough to develop more and age fit with the rebuild. Need to trade a veteran d man? Ok. How about Petry, Holl, Chariot? Nope. Traded the best vet in Maatta. Who’s a cup winner and still young enough to fit the rebuild. Stevie should overpay to get Sam Bennett. As a Panthers fan also, that’s be bittersweet, but he’s the exact type of player wings need. Imagine Bennett instead of Copp for example? Just that one trade off moves the needle massively.

Sometimes a step back is not a step back. This year there are 4 players seeing ice time that were in GR last year: Edvinsson, Berggren, Johansson and Kasper. They did not replace guys there age, this was a necessary pruning of the line up to let some new, young growth happen. And go check in on the World Juniors and add Axel Sandin-Pelika and Tre Augustine into the discussion. In a couple years, another long playoff run will happen, for years. Oh, and by the way, Original Six doesn't mean much as the 6 have not won a Cup in 10 years and individually, they have a Cup drought of 10 to 58 years AND Canada has a 32 year blank sheet. And fun fact: 6 of the last 8 Cup finalist come from sun belt states with low or no taxes.
@bstech200322 күн бұрын
Do you actually watch many Red Wings games? Like the last 4 games under Todd McLellan? This is a markedly different team. Under Lalonde, the Wings would play tight defensively and if they fell behind then they panicked and all hell would break loose. A typical Wings game would be to go into the 2nd period up 2-1. Give up a goal and suddenly they are tied so the panic would set in and before you know it they would be down 6-2. And it seemed like there were always 3 or 4 goals in 5 minutes. If there is something I am really frustrated with Yzerman, it is that he kept Blashill too long, 537 games. And let’s face facts the Wings quit on Lalonde. My take on the Yzerplan is I wish Stevie would stop the long contracts to average players, especially on defense. Chiarot has been a disaster. Ditto Petry. I strongly disagree about the draft picks. There are a few later-round picks like Mazur, Lombardi and Augustine. My bigger question for Yzerman is why they wait so long to bring players in? This year is an exception with 4 rookies on the team but in past years it has been 1 or 2. Are Mazur or Danielson ready for the NHL? I would like to see them try. And why did they let Axel Sandin-Pellika go to the SHL? He currently leads all defensemen in the SHL in scoring. Could he replace what we lost when we didn’t resign Shayne Gostisbehere? I don’t know but a creative defenseman that scores a ton would help a lot.

The only disclaimer is that Yzerman didn’t have much to “tear down” from as far as roster make up. The wings had the worst record by points percentage ever recorded in the NHL for the 2019-2020 season, and they got the 4th overall pick. They still picked the best player of that draft imo (Raymond) but my point is that the wings have been at the depths of the league and have yet to draft higher than 4th overall. They have had low success rates with picks past the first round, I give you that. But some recent later picks may become NHL regulars in due time.

when you look at draft history, Holland picked Zadina over Hughes. then Cholowski, Svechnikov, and whoever else who never made it etc. so with Yzermans draft picks, yeah it set the wings back a bit just waiting for his actual picks to get older and ready. the Yzerplan is delayed because of poor management from previous. you have 1 Larkin from past 10 years of Holland who turned out fine. it sucks but time is a factor. many good prospects coming up. these shit signings of Copp, Erne, Sprong, Compher, Holl, etc are just to fill time. make the Wings not complete ass but we know we aren't gonna be good until our Yzerman picks are ready. and there are a ton coming.

I think Yzermans biggest flaw was his free agent signings. Outside of that. He's done as well as he could given the pure unlucky draft lottery spots we've gotten. Once the defensive and goalie prospects come into the NHL in 1-2 years. Those 2 spots are pretty set. Maybe some signings of left handed D's but thats about it. Offensively its the weakest part. But hoping that Buchelnikov being that superstar will be all we really have to hope hits. Nate Danielson will be solid, Carter Mazur looks good when hes healthy. Outside of superstar forward and a 1st line Center. The Yzerplan drafting has been quite good if not exceeding the poor draft luck. It just takes time for prospects to develop. A mix of waiting for the prospects and praying Yzerman gets better at free agent signings is the 2 biggest problems of the team.

I can give three reasons... Shaky defending from line 2 and 3, iffy goaltending, Lalonde was like Matt Patrica, and need to trade away a couple old guys to improve

Trading those players will likely get you a few late picks but probably will be the route Stevie Y takes. MClellan should be able to give them a new coach boast at least so hopefully there are some improvements

Wings fans are the most shameless homers I've ever encountered in sports. You blame the veteran free agents for everything, never say a bad word or allow a bad word about Larkin Raymond or Seider. The entire current 2nd line is a plus at 5v5 this year. All 3 guys. JT Compher is a + at 5v5 this year. You know who are minuses at 5v5 this year? Larkin and Raymond. Top line. Their top line w DeBrincat got outscored 13-8 this season. The Kane Cat Larkin top line meanwhile is winning 17-7 together over 2 seasons. Kane as a Red Wing is +3 at 5v5. In that same time, Lucas Raymond is -13 at 5v5. "Shaky defending from line 2 and 3" haha ok.

@paulwt9783 fair weather fans that have never laced a pair up. Unfortunately with all the winning Detroit did in the late 90s/early 2000's it has left the state full of arm chair GMs. Clueless to how a real winner builds a foundation from ground up

"avoided a harsh rebuild"? theyve been mediocre for almost a decade, to me thats a long, painful and "harsh" rebuild

Harsh is being at the bottom of the league, Detroit really hasn’t done that

They've fallen from the top of the bottom to the middle of the bottom. We call it "the Yzerplan".

They have regressed a bit but I’m expecting a turnaround at some point, they are playing way below their potential
