The oscillator is the fundamental building block of radio. I build a Hartley oscillator using a circuit from ARRL's "Hands On Radio." I walk through how they work and demonstrate the shortcomings of the approach and why it's so difficult to build a really good oscillator. I end with a few words about how modern techniques are different. Subscribe: / davidcasler . Ask Dave Playlist: goo.gl/inaQeB. Tip Jar: ke0og.net/tip-jar

Good stuff! Added on to what I studied for my grol and extra. Well rounded coverage from theory, schematics, equations, animations, to demonstrations. Would recommend!

1000 thanks for modulating your voice as you speak. Most videos have speakers who are brutally boring with their voices. Your voice is a great aid in teaching. I really enjoyed your work. KC0GMF

I know what it is like to be "Crystal-Locked" and I am proud to say I served my apprenticeship riding the quartz oscillator. Being "stuck" on a single frequency is liberating and really helps calling CQ for hours and hours. This is why 7112.8 became known as Ade's Channel. That's where I was stuck for years.

'Frankly I think this is pretty much magic'. I agree as a kid I wondered at the insides of our old radio and tried to understand how and why it could pick up and produce. I still dont know enough but I know more now. Really enjoyed and learned watching this, well done thank you

Thanks for the "in the field" experience reporting. I have found even very simple oscillators to be more difficult to get to work than advertised. Thanks for all your hard work!

Dave, as to your long leads, look around for breadboard connectors that resemble wire staples or brads. There are assortments of them in differing lenghs and colors. You will find that the spurious and harmonic signals are greatly reduced. Otherwise, excellent foray into the world or oscillators. 71/72 de k6whp dit dit

Awesome video as per usual! Great content, and I love having to refresh that part of my brain. I'm almost not doing any electronics so it's easy to forget :) Thanks heaps - de VK4ALE

My property is rather small and power lines makes it even smaller, meaning I have about 30' of useable space for antennas. So far I have a only have a 2m/70cm vertical strapped to my chimney but I need to expand now that I've got my general license. Some problems I am facing are, no trees on my property that I can use to hoist anything in, my yard slopes downardward quite significantly toward my useable space meaning it's in quite a hole, I have no room for guy lines and I have no help to get things off the ground. What antenna would you suggest for such a situation? I'm in no rush since I'll have to save up for a bit before I actually get a functioning rig together. I know that you feature MFJ antennas quite a bit and I trust your judgement there so that will help narrow my search.

The selection of an antenna is highly personal. You might look at attaching something like the R8 to your chimney.

Wow--that video is from a long time ago! The book and the kit came from the ARRL bookstore. Although the book is still available, the kit is not. You can get small parts in small quantities from www.sparkfun.com and others.

Great video Dave. I also lament over capacitor identification. Have you seen the LCR-T4 multi-function meter/tester/? Google LCR-T4 tons of them out there. This thing looks great but I wonder if it works. Get one and test it!
@davecasler
@davecasler 6 жыл бұрын
My multimeter supposedly can test for capacitance, but I think the long lead lengths make it unreliable. I tried testing several capacitors and kept getting the same answer. So I need a better capacitor tester. I'm sure there's something out there.

I've been binge watching your videos. Great stuff. In theory there is a stamped 3 digit code on small capacitors to identify value and tolerance. With Radio Shack on life support, and I guess Kanga closing up (health reasons), DIY kit/parts suppliers are shrinking. Knowing the fundamentals, and experimenting with electronics might go the way of cursive writing. I hope not though.

I have all whole bunch of capacitors from a RadioShack Grab Bag that are marked with only two characters. I suppose someday I should do the research to create a video on capacitor marking!
@geeess4685
@geeess4685 6 жыл бұрын
Good idea. Caps are all over the place with how they are marked (or not), mostly based on size. Sometimes the color acts as a character. Another video I would be interested in seeing would be your views on where Ham radio is headed. Yaesu seems on the right track to move forward without leaving everyone else behind.
