Years ago on a trip from NC to West Tennessee, our VW bus had a major engine problem in the. Smokies about 70 miles from Gatlinburg, my dad and oldest brother, hitch hiked into town, and got back with all the parts needed. While they were gone my other older brother had gotten everything ready to drop the engine so it was ready to do! A little after midnight they had the engine ready to go back in. We all slept in the side of the road, and my dad and brothers got it back together by 8 the next morning and off we went!

I only eat at In-Out- once when my son and i took a road trip to LA a few years ago. ..great food we need one in Iowa a man can live on pork chops alone.. Come on we got a baseball team here we should be able to get a In-Out- Burger "Build it and they will come" . Started my collection of vw breakdown parts & tools in Iowa i would only find John Deere at the parts store & some seed corn.... Car looks great enjoy watching you all rebuild it.

As soon as I read the title, I said: Condenser!! (It's easier to change the complete dist that try to change points and/or condenser.) Done it too many times. I remember one time, with the family, driving from florida to calif, (79 Bus) pulled into a mcdonalds, running rough. changed condenser and finished the trip with no problems. Yup, gotta know the symptoms and how to fix.

Hey wanted to give you guys some good news. Finally went today and purchased my first Bug. A 1963 immaculate gulf blue bug. The guy I bought it from has been a VW guy his entire life. I won’t get into detail about the car due to too much to list but I even have the original purchase receipt when it was bought in 63. The car is unreal. Thanks again guys for pushing me to get one !

If there's one good takeaway from this, it's that breakdowns happen to even the best of us. (I once had to change the clutch cable on my '65 in my bank's parking lot after it broke!) Love that bug, guys.

Change it? I've broken many a cable on my Bus (before I found out the tube was rusted/ broken and the cable was chaffing) Just gotta learn to sync the gears and shift with no clutch/ (after starting while in gear)

Breakdowns happen. Last year I burned a piston in May. Took my 63bug in had a1640 topend put in. Had the trans pulled as it leaked like you wouldn’t believe. New steering box. Mechanic sez replace the fuel pump they go bad and ruin engines. I get it back late August. The StLouis bug show is in September.. I got her shined up and my wife and folding chairs in the bug. We leave and brake down 3 times before I give up. We turned back and end up on the side of the road 2 more times. I get it home and go into it. The brand new fuel pump was bad. I replaced it and made it to the show this year😊

Old used German vw parts are made better than the new Empi crap vw parts available today. Don't leave home without spare OE distributor, fuel pump, carburetor, etc.😉👍

And you can buy good quality spare parts for the original VW Distributor. Mostly the capacitor have a short cut. If the shaft is not worn out you can use them for a long time. The new chinese crap is horrible.

OE or good usable German is practically impossible to beat .. from some of the new words on the street is Empi is working towards bringing quality back to their name . Be cool to see this no doubt .. time will tell.. Thanks so much for supporting us and contributing to the channel 😎

What was actually wrong with the distributor? I don't think you said? Or I missed it? Seems a bit drastic to have to carry a spare distributor. The VA looks out to me aren't they normally turned more clockwise? Pointing to about 7 o'clock if you know how I mean? A lot of nice vws on show too.. The trekker looked cool.

Kris Reed - we needed to move to a 205 series distributor to correctly use the vacuum signal the carb was presenting . Too weak for the big cap distributor. They carry spares cause those guys take long trips and side of the road repairs can be quick and painless with spares on hand . Turns out Matt Jackson had the perfect spare we needed .. We had to replace his donation to the car - as we say in the shop . “Put it on the list” that means we shared but we do want it to be replaced ..

Oh vac can placement also comes from where the drive is dropped in -inside the motor. Plug placement , and dwell and such . Not sure there is a right or wrong exactly but certainly if the can was in the back it would cause physical issues and you would have to get it way closer to “right” than “wrong”

Just to second that notion... A good electronic points distributor eliminates those types of problems. I switched to one back in the late 90's couldn't believe the difference. Just carry a stock 09 for emergencies or at least some old school points.
