I'm stoked that I found this video because I'm in the process of reskinning this module for the 1970s. So glad I stumbled upon this video, thank you!

That concept sounds cool - I have yet to run CoC in the 70s but I really want to try it. Would love to hear how it goes!

There's another channel that covers Call of cthulhu and other TTRPGs named Seth Skorkowsky. He reviewed this module and he pretty much gave the same advice to run this in modern day as a ghosthunters TV group. Great minds think alike 😊

Well, there are several different settings for Call Of Cthulhu. There's the 1930s and 40s standard but there's a modern setting in 1980s (The Dare), 1960s-70s (Carnivalof Madness), and modern day (Panacea, Viral, and more) as well as settings in the Dark Ages, Ancient Rome, the future in space stations and colonies, and Cthulhu End Times that are set in the post apocalyptic future like Mad Max-ish

I'm In the middle of running the haunting now as a first time keeper, but not a first time GM, for our group. 1920s is good for me as im more familiar with this era. Love the style, and simpler life. Loving doing US accents, it's really different from our usual Medevil Fantasy system.

Love your comments about why you prefer contemporary settings - I totally agree and run all my Cthulhu stuff present day or nearly so. HPL wasn't writing history, he was writing contemporary horror and making reference to the latest scientific theories - showing how the mythos was way beyond even the most cutting edge understanding. Running scenarios in the 1920s runs the risk of making it a period piece and keeping the horror at arms length... to the average 2021 player, the 1920s setting may as well be a fantasy world. And as for the constant concern of "but cellphones!" --- if the mythos could be defeated or exposed by someone having a cellphone then I guess it's not that powerful or dangerous.

Adding a comment here to help out your channel. Really loving the quality of Keeper content, and hearing how your players responded to a classic adventure with a fresh coat of paint was delightful.

"In my reskin of The Haunting, I just cut this section entirely, instead I handle motivation during character creation" 7:01 I think this part is a greater change than the transformation from "classic" to "modern". I see two weak spots in the original scenario: Why are the characters together? Why are they interested in investigating the house? Here you give the players guidelines for what kinds of characters to generate. That is a fix for those two problems.

The Seattle Washington setting is a great idea! I actually lived in Puget Sound for a good decade so that could be useful!

At first I had a gut reaction of disagreeing with you on the reskin, after watching more of the video, I like your reasoning and find it sound and reasonable. I dont know if I will be reskinning but, I think I may bring more 'realism' to the game and brining the situation down to earth for the players instead of having them try to slap on some gumshoes. I think I might present it in a way that doesnt matter what time frame it is in.

It sounds like reskinning adventures to your local area can make for great fun for a horror adventure. I could see a creepy house like this existing at a lakeside or in the middle of the woods in my home region too. Having the surroundings be particularly tricky to navigate in a car but well known to the cultists. I'm not inclined to just kill the party if it retreats (and especially not if they prevail over Corbitt), but having their car get wrecked by a cultist ambush is something I would consider doing, and that's assuming the party fails their drive checks. Assuming they don't, they'd lose the cultists in the chase and have something to think about when they get back.

If characters are exploring a haunted house in Seattle, Washington in 2010 and it is not Kurt Cobain's house, i'm out

I'm reskinning it for a buffy/xfiles theme and this video was sooo helpful thank you so much! You gave me good ideas on how to tackle some of the bits I never really liked about the pacing or the story, highly appreciate it.

I'm running this tomorrow, said in Seattle in 2010 using some of your ideas. I've been watching your content on my TV and I decided to subscribe to you on my phone. It looks like you haven't been active in 2 years. That's a bummer. I like what you've done.

I plan on running The Haunting in my home city as well. Most of my players have been here for most of not all of their lives so they have a history here. One of my players family has lived here since the late 1800s. The family farm is on the outskirts of my city in the 1920s

I love this idea and plan on doing the same thing for my group in a couple weeks. I like the modern take on the scenario and using ghost hunting as the premise for being there! Do you by chance have your handouts available to use somewhere on the internet?
