"I was right here and none of you could see me." I swear, that line gets me every single time. The fact that young Nellie's line echoes into the present, with the family getting so caught up in arguing with each other, taking out their grievances and years of pent-up frustration on each other, that they completely forget the reason why they're actually there and just ignore Nell, is just absolutely devastating

Anybody else notice a little detail? Before this episode in the early timeline, Olivia is always saying “I WAS having the strangest dream.” When she reappears in the hallway after Hugh is chasing her doppelgänger around, she looks at him and says “I AM having the strangest dream.” That was when she became determined to wake up I guess.

Whenever the family argues, Nell intervenes. But nobody can see her. You are no longer afraid when you know that. That only makes you sad. 😞 Now we have to highlight the child actors again. So great. Incredible with the background of the long takes. When you're done with this series, I don't think you need to be afraid of ghosts. Because in principle it is so that behind every ghost there is only one person with a tragic story.
@briangonigal3974
@briangonigal3974 4 жыл бұрын
On a purely technical level, the entire cast & crew deserve Emmys for their work in this episode but yes, ESPECIALLY all the child actors. The precise timing required in these shots to hit your exact mark at just the right moment, even timing your lines out so the dialog is just the right length so the lines hit at the right camera movement, and then to give an actual acting performance on top of that? It's almost more than a lot of adult actors can handle.

I have watched this series 3 times along with several reactions of it and I still cry at the end. Between Hugh seeing young Nell in the coffin and the ending voiceover of Luke and Nell it is just such profound sadness. The old woman in the bed was the voice that whispered to young Luke and Nell in the kitchen when they were dropping the buttons, and whom Luke saw refelected in the brass megaphone by the bed. The child in the wheelchair was referenced by Olivia when she had he deja-vu while wearing the shawl in the living room. Another great reaction - the next 4 episodes basically cover the next 24 hours.

IMO, for this and for Bly- don't listen to the people telling you to look for background ghosts on your first watch. You don't want to just be looking for them and missing anything going on in the plot. That's just a bonus that you can look for if you choose to watch the seasons again! :)

This episode was shot in (I believe) 3 shots over the course of 4 days. They built a MASSIVE set so they could seamlessly pan from funeral parlor to the Hill House mansion, and the cast was choreographed like a live play. One of the most amazing feats accomplished on a TV show in decades. This show - at least for this episode - deserved an Emmy. It's shameful they were ignored. Oh, btw...there's a great 10-15 minute bts video on KZbin about this episode. I'm not asking you to react to it, but rather just letting you know for your own personal interest. It's really good.

Don't get caught up on the whole "hidden ghost" thing. They're there for atmosphere but don't really have anything to do with the episodes specifically. I don't think I noticed any of them when I watched the series and that was fine. Same with Bly Manor. Some people seem to want to play a game and try to find them more than just watch the show. Yeah, this episode was technically amazing and emotionally draining in equal measure. Lots more terror and tears to come.
@briangonigal3974
@briangonigal3974 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the "hidden ghosts" are basically a clever little device to generate social media buzz, people comparing notes in chat room & comments sections on how many they spotted for each ep. The hidden ghosts themselves are actually not that significant, generic-looking spookhouse dummies for the most part, none of which add to or conform to any of the house's established history & backstory that's eventually revealed (at least that's the case with Hill House, I haven't actually watched Bly Manor so I don't know if they do anything different with them there). And FWIW, due to the unique nature of this ep with all the extended takes turning it into something akin to a live stage performance with a constantly moving handheld camera, they weren't able to put in many hidden ghosts; there are only one or two, not counting the claim that Ghost Nell is actually present in way more of the shots in the funeral home, only so blurred out in the background that she's impossible to make out.

The fact that at the very end when she says “I was right here the whole time. Nobody could see me.” And it shows bent neck Nellie is so eerie when you realize that bent neck Nellie was there with the family in the wake room standing there, seemingly out in the open not even hidden, and nobody could see her… not even the viewer usually. But she was there.

I’m sure you know now, but off the top of my head, episode 3 has one in between the stairs when Theo finds that secret room and opens the hatch to the basement, in episode 5 when Liv finds Nell written on the wall, and Theo walks in, behind Theo and Nellie there’s a piano. I was waiting for you two to react to this episode! I love the whole show and this has to be probably my favorite episode because it was amazing both story wise and also technically-wise (if that's even a word) Like, the fact that there were only a few cuts in the whole episode made it feel like you aren't even watching TV, it feels more like a play or like visualizing a novel. The director Mike Flanagan and the entire acting crew just blow my mind with this show and I hope you two can react to the rest of the series. I never really cry about stuff but this show just wrecks me and tears me apart and it feels cathartic in a way once you realize how beautiful the storyline is. Great video, Thanks for the great content :)

At least for me, the one shot technique makes the tension get higher and higher as part of my brain was wondering how long they can keep this up, which bleeds over into the part of my brain anticipating a jump scare, etc. I feel like the five children in (almost) order represent the Kubler-Ross stages of grief: Denial (Steve), Anger (Theo), Bargaining (Shirley), Depression (Luke), Nell (acceptance). I didn't see anyone mention that Theo found out she was pregnant the day before the shoot for this episode (married to director Mike Flanagan) which made all the falling down scenes tense!

Olivia and Nelly are The Two Storms, the two catalysts of this story that is why the family is reliving this grief. But at the same time this explains a lot. Nelly was able to move through time and space, so could Olivia (the mom) both were lost in one of the storms and both are dead now. Except Nelly didn't kill herself maybe one was the catalyst and the other the hero and the one to bring healing to the family. Shirley said that Nell was the one that always wanted to get them all together, i feel like that is her mission while the mother separated them through grief Nell is uniting them.. The Two Storms.... I think that Mike Flanagan has a good idea of what true horror is. The horrors of what happens to us in real life and a lil subtle jumps scares within his storytelling is remarkable. That is like his own personal brand. God.... This whole episode was so sad. I couldn't stop crying, especially towards the end.. "I was right here nobody could see me". But seeing baby Nell in that casket was too much for me. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
