Apparently, in the scene where Luke celebrates 2 years of being clean, the director had initially planned to show the red room window in the background, indicating that the siblings never left the room. I think I remember reading that the director had talks with the crew, and they decided to not use that idea... otherwise it would have been very dark

The first line, from ep 1, was a direct quote (and kind of a famous line) from the original Shirley Jackson novel. The 2nd line is Mike Flanagan's own spin on it after he wound up telling a much different, original story that at its core had almost nothing to do with Shirley Jackson's novel.

At the end, the father was able to show to Steve what happened back then in "the final night", when Olivia killed herself, because HE was dead (took pills before entering red room) and became a ghost of the house. And being a ghost of the house you are able to mess with living persons minds, who step into the house , and show them memories (even modify their memories or show them future events that will never happen, just to make them believe it is real , like Poppy did with almost everybody). I really think Poppy was not really that evil... just lonely and bored as fuck... Hugh locked the house for a lot of years and Poppy is the kind of woman who gets bored very quickly... Best show ever btw .... I hope you will react to Haunting of Bly Manor as well... Carefull tough... Bly Manor is a LOVE STORY, not a HORROR STORY. So don't judge it by comparing it to 1st season.
@jhornacek
@jhornacek Ай бұрын
"I really think Poppy was not really that evil... just lonely and bored as fuck" Um, this is a crazy take (pun intended) since Poppy in life was clinically insane and very likely responsible for the deaths of her children. Also it's implied that her husband (Will) walled himself up behind that brick wall to escape her. Poppy was insane so she became an insane ghost. She was the one who drove Olivia insane to get her to kill Luke and Nell. None of the other ghosts were insane or evil or wanted to harm anyone. Poppy was the only ghost that was attacking the family.

@@BoG25Cz It's fine to love her character - she's a great villain. But she's definitely the villain. Without her, Olivia isn't driven insane and doesn't kill Abigail and try to kill Luke and Nell. After it ended, I remember sitting in the dark, sobbing, thinking of how Olivia, Nellie, Hugh and the Dudleys would now forever roam the hallways of abandoned Hill House, with nowhere else to go. At least they have each other in the afterlife. Isn't that heartbreaking? Also, the way Nellie accepted that she was dead, the moment she saw herself as the bent neck lady. She accepted her terrible fate. Oh, Nell. ❤

During their nightmares in the room there was always something red (Luke's shoes, Steve's clothes...) and at the end the cake for Luke's 2 years of sobriety cake is red, so you could interpret that they all never left the room and died in the house, trapped in the dream. The creators of the show almost did that ending as canon but decided they wanted a happy ending so they did what we saw instead, leaving it open for interpretation. There's also a theory that each sibling is a stage of grief (Steve is denial, Shirley is anger, Theo is bargain...) which is one of my favorite theories about the show. Last one: look at Olivia's stare at Steve in the end, it's a piercing stare, might suggest she, and the house, are not one with the Crains...

This series was incredible. And ugh Nellie. And her whole story and eveything. I have multiple severe health issues that effect my life expectancy and what Nellie says in the red room is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard around just the whole concept and eveything of “death and the afterlife”. When Nellis spirit says “I learned a secret. There is no without, I am not gone. I am scattered into so many pieces, sprinkled on your life like new snow. There’s so much I want to say to you all, our last words weren’t our last. Forgiveness is warm, like a tear on a cheek. Think of then and of me and stand in the rain. I loved you completely, and you loved me the same... the rest is confetti.” I actually wanted to get this or a portion of this or something tattooed 2 years ago and I went online and looked up “sprinkle tattoos” and I was shocked to see 1 or 2 photos of tattoos that people got from the same quote and I was like damn! People already got to it fast!. But I think it’s so so beautiful and it’s actually in my wishes for my parents and family to say at my celebration of life and stuff

I have enjoyed your reactions to this series as much as you enjoyed this series. I'm so glad you held on until the end. Much of the dialog in this episode is from the original book. I will recommend that you watch a Hidden Ghosts of Hill House video - it adds another layer to the show. The Haunting (1963) is the original and a close adaptation of the book. Bly Manor is a Gothic Romance loosely based on the book The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Several of his other short stories are woven into the storyline. I think you'll like it.

The house was never evil although we spend almost all of the series thinking it's the villain. But it's Poppy - she is the only evil one. She was an insane person so she became an insane ghost. It was her that drove Olivia insane, not the house or any other ghost.

Hey guys, don't forget to put this into your Hill House playlist! Once again, you guys did a great job following the story and catching lots of clues. Most reactors either serve up empathy and expression, or attentiveness and analysis. You do both.

I loved your reaction for Hill House. I found you through it and have really enjoyed it. I promised from the beginning that this was not an ordinary horror show, it is more than that. This episode, I had a lump in my throat the whole time.

Awesome reaction as always to a great series, glad you are taking on Bly Manor next. Also gad you decided to look at S2 as its own thing and not compare the two, thats the best way to go into S2.

So glad you both decided to react to this series. I had actually recommended it in a comment before you started. Really enjoy watching your videos and really enjoyed watching you do this particular series.. I like good reaction videos because they make you feel as if you are discovering the show all over again for the first time after you have already watched it. I think you guys do an excellent job of creating that feeling for the viewer. I saw today where you described Hill House as a love story. I used the term family drama but it comes down to the same thing. When I watched the series I also thought it was a masterpiece and could not be surpassed but then I saw Bly Manor and really had to think hard about that. I think they are both awesome in their own way. By the way, after seeing how much you loved The Boys may I suggest The Umbrella Academy. It's another very unconventional and different "superhero" story.

A beautiful reaction to a beautiful ending! Loved every minute of it. When you two feel up to it, you really should react to one of the compilations of “hidden” ghosts. I would love to see your reaction to that. Again thank you both for this awesome finale!

I heard somewhere that the director was originally going to put the red door in the background of the shot where the family is celebrating Luke's 2 years of sobriety, implying that they never got out of the house but he didn't think people could handle it lmao, not sure how true that is but I'm glad they didn't.

the entirety of this episode and the final few seconds of episode 6 are among the hardest I've cried while watching a series, and you'd think I'd cry less with the rewatches, but I think the last rewatch somehow hit me a bit harder

Something that needs to he said that I think is incredibly important is 7 keeps you safe. If you look during the final scenes during the scene with luke celebrating his two year sobriety even though he has lost his mother, sister, and father there are still 7 people there to keep him safe.

At the end, when lLuke blows the 2 years candle (in a red cake lol), they are seven again. The four brothers, Theo's Wife, Steven's Wife and Shirley's Husband. Its was kind cool. About Steven, I think the haunt of Steven was his father himself. When young, he want to be strong and take care and protect everyone, and help his daddy, like his daddy is a hero, someone he wants to "be like him". And then he sees his daddy fails misereable, on that night, leaving the mother behind, never telling anybody what happened. So he doesnt understand and he gets angry, and go opposite to his father in everything, like the father says it was a ghost, he says its not.. if his father said it was family crazyness, he would say "no, it was a ghost". Also, he doesnt want to be a father anymore cos this, and not because he was afraid his child would be crazy. At least is what I think.
