That is actually the only moment in the show that did not convince me. Mrs Dudley is portrayed as Christian. One strong enough in her belief that she has to be stopped from witnessing to the kids. Why would someone who believes in an afterlife in paradise in the presence of their god, chose to die in a place where her spirit is trapped with the ghosts of her children instead? In limbo for as long as the House stands. That would be only slightly better than hell.

Fun fact: Luke was supposed to die at the end of the show. The scene where he's blowing out the '2 years sober' candle was originally going to be hinted that it was happening in the red room by featuring the red room window on the wall behind and using red icing on the cake. But then the director decided it was too sad so he covered up the window with photo frames and made it a happy ending where he lives.

I will never not cry over the fact that Nellie was the one who truly woke up her siblings. Ugh. My heart. Also. One subtle touch that I don’t know if it was intentional but I’m sure it was because nothing in this show seems to be coincidental. But I thought it was pure poetry that Poppy was the one forcing the kids to see their nightmares and that she was the one who manipulated Olivia. She was “poisoning” their thoughts, if you will. Poppies are poisonous. I don’t know. I just thought that was genius.

It may be a coincidence, but one the show writers noticed and took advantage of. I read the book years ago, so my memory might not be reliable, but I think Poppy Hill was part of the legend of Hill House. I don't remember anyone in the novel having a heroin or opioid addiction (could be wrong), but maybe the show's writers came up with that connection based on the name. Interesting observation for sure.

Luv2Dnce4 this show had SO many subtleties to it. Like when Olivia falls backwards in episode 9. It’s almost an exact mimic of Theo falling in episode 3. Both are “in” Shirley’s mortuary, both near Nellie, both got scared, both fall from right to left with their knees bent up. It sounds ridiculous but if you watch those bits again, it’s uncanny. I think Nell had to die because out of all the 5 stages of grief she represents acceptance. She listened to her siblings and was there for them she also was the youngest and most vulnerable one who saw it all and was the most impacted by the house. I don't think any of the other siblings could of brought them together except for Nell. Still so tragic.
@srae19715 жыл бұрын
I feel like Olivia and Nell weren't "meant" to be there, it's just that they were the most susceptible. In the beginning Olivia talks about being sensitive and seeing the ghosts there, but that made her especially vulnerable to the house, and then once it got her she worked on the rest of the kids. Nellie and Luke were the most damaged by the house. Nellie was just unlucky, I think. The thing that I found really really interesting is that Hugh didn't seem to have a version of the Red Room.

I think all the women in their family have powers. Remember the story Liv told the mom while they were cleaning up the glass. And the conversation she had with theo when she gave her the gloves. @neonoires5 жыл бұрын
This episode was so emotionally draining but in a good way. Nell's speech, Hugh's explanation, and the Dudley's over Steven's narration broke me down. I think Hugh's red room was mostly being obsessed with fixing the house. The house took up his time while it fed on his wife and kids. I think Olivia explained it best with the kite and the string. He was the one who took the rest of the "meal" away from the house back in 1992. Theo also explained her stance on things. She's always been in the middle-Steven and Shirley didn't want to believe it and Luke and Nell were so consumed by what happened that it essentially ruined their lives. Theo sort of saw both sides and then went and did her own thing and coped as best as she could. I think her stage of grief was meant to be bargaining. She did a lot of talking herself down whenever she was scared of something. Nell was just the first sibling to get taken by the house, I believe it would have happened to all of them eventually. I also appreciate how you guys didn't dump all over Steven and Shirley like other reactors do. I think Shirley stepped as the mother figure when Olivia died and Hugh sort of went off on his own. She was the one who took on all of their problems. She was the one who always answered Nell's calls (except the one time she was at work), she paid for Luke to get rehab, she let Theo live with her, and she has children of her own so I can imagine she'd have a bit of a complex. Steven is the oldest and their dad sort of ditched with no explanation so he was angry/in denial. I think they were both very human in their responses to what happened.
@neonoires5 жыл бұрын
^^ Responding here because this comment is long enough. What I like about Theo is the fact that she listened. She never shut down Luke and Nell but she also didn't berate Shirley and Steven constantly. Also while she didn't like being touched and was seen as the "angriest" she was always the most understanding to her siblings in my opinion. She had her moments but I just think it's funny how the one who didn't like physical touch could level with everyone without judgement. Except when she heard about Nell's suicide but she just heard the news so she was angry.

The ghosts are real, but I think it's saying that ghosts are not just ghosts, like Shirley's "ghost." In the house, they were very real (I think it said early on that some early owners messed around with occult stuff?) but they were ALSO symbols of really psychological/emotional stuff like how the tall man came to symbolize Luke's addiction
@salomesalamanca42555 жыл бұрын
The way they give so much depth to the characters is outstanding, honestly you just fall in love with luke and nell even knowing from the beginning that she dies. They’re all victims after all and the house keeps them as trophies. Olivia was very susceptible to what was going on, so was Nell and they both accepted it. Luke was more scared and Theo just kept to herself. Ghosts were real but the pain the characters were going through made them more “easy” to bring back

Bill Stephens, yes. Look at the garbage that is 13RW season 2. (I haven’t even seen S1 but everyone I know says S2 is trash). Someone needs to tell networks & Netflix that producing one-off mini series is okay. Actors don’t deserve to be tied down for 5+ years unless it’s a real good long running book adaptation. Ps, AHS was always meant to be a longterm show (9 levels of hell). It had the formula to be great. The fault lies w Murphy & his mediocre writing.

The way I see it Hugh didn't have any special sensitivity to the supernatural part of the house unlike Olivia and probably to a degree all the kids, so instead of tricking him into spending time in the red room, the house distracted him with the mold issue so he wouldn't notice his wife spiralling or anything else going on until it was too late.

As a parent, this show hits so hard with the idea of keeping your kid's safe. The house's influence warped that idea to make Olivia "scattered"; it tricked her into making her think that the only way to keep her kids safe was by death. The house does this as a means to feed it through the consumption of souls. This last episode made me come undone and weep with the explanations, the dialogue and monologues, Huge's sacrifice for his kids, and how Nell truly saved her siblings as seen at the end. This show is much more than horror, it is complex, non-linear, and blends psychology and horror together with beautiful cinematography, a tremendous script, and an amazing cast. This show is everything you could want in a show and I love it even though it breaks my heart. Great reaction, guys 💙

i have been living for ya'lls reaction to this series and I hate that it's come to an end. This is easily my favorite series on Netflix and getting to enjoy it again with you guys has been a wild ride. I've loved ya'lls conversations, your ideas and thoughts and the raw emotions that come crashing out of the characters that were so well written and portrayed. It's been one hell of an adventure and I'm so happy you guys did this~ Well done

This, to me, as someone who is an Emmy voting member of the TV Academy, is by far the best show on TV for the past season. It has stayed with me longer than anything else I've seen this year. Exceptional in every way. I was extremely skeptical about what to expect since Shirley Jackson's novel is one of my favorite books ever and this show is nothing like the book. It carries the book's DNA, but it's a very different story and a singularly inspired original. Well done, all around.

I watched this show third time recently and noticed an amazing detail. Olivia's dress dramatically changes as the days go by. We saw in ep9 when family first entered the house, Olivia's outfit was way modern than the ones we have been seeing from ep1. I mean, Mrs Dudley outfit (the blue one when she says the world is cruel and all) in that statue room was one of the most modern outfits in the show (I really like how Mrs Dudley was shown as an angel when she was standing just in front of the angel statue with wings at her shoulders) Olivia's outfits were matching with the wallpapers of the house honestly. At one moment I even noticed how her gown was exactly same green pattern as the wall behind her. She was literally melting into the house... Amazingly written show!

I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, but just in case some people don't know: each of the kids, oldest to youngest, represent a stage of grief. Steve is Denial, Shirley is Anger, Theo is Bargaining. Luke is Depression and Nell is Acceptance, at the end (after Depression). Steve closes it all off because he went the whole journey during this show.

Just discovered y'all's reactions, and I was stoked to see your reactions to what is one of the most emotionally, even spiritually meaningful cinematic works I've ever seen. I cannot imagine disliking the show's ending, which is one of the best, most heartfelt endings I've ever seen. This is one of those rare, rare works that can actually change people, for the better. I love it dearly, and it was a joy to revisit it through your reactions. Now I get to rewatch the show myself and bawl my eyes out too!

Yep, it starts off crazy scary - then leaves you a puddle on the floor... Grand reaction/review... See ya next time... If there is a part two - season 2 - then it should talk about how Hill House became The Hill House - like why is Poppy crazy, etc?

Valyn McNeil the show was supposed to have 10 minutes on each episode explaining the ghosts stories. What happened to them, why they died in the house. I really wish this could be the season2 since they already have all the stories ready.

Valyn McNeil there is a season 2. The aeason 2 will be called The Haunting of Bly Manor. Check their ig account. The show is now called the Haunting for every season that will happen.

When you look at this show at a psychological stand point it's brilliant. Fear and Guilt are ghosts in our lives that if not faced or dealt with can destroy us. All the siblings are a representation of the 5 stages of grief and also within the family dynamics.

The ending of this series really hit me in the gut. Nell looked absolutely devastated that the house she had been protecting her siblings from got her dad while her mother looks at her own son like she's...hungry. the house not only changed her while she was living it warped what ever shred of her was left there with it.

This show! It appeals to our basic fears as parents and our endless love for our children. It has so much heart and that’s part of why it’s so amazing. Scary but kind of a fun scary for me anyway. Loved watching you watch it. I got emotional all over again.

Luke and Nellie where present at the final tea party and Luke buried his memories with drugs, which leaves Nellie as the one person left to be drawn drawn back first and 'awoken' by her mother. As you mentioned in part 1, Nellie was then there to protect the others.

*The most famous ghosts of Hill House before the Crain family run away :* - William Hill : The tall man with the hat. The same guy who died trapped behind the wall. "Fear and guilt are sisters. I knew a man once who knew those sisters well. [...] Every morning he went just a little more mad. He built a wall to keep it all outside. [...] But there was just enough room for him... And them. [...] And his voice left him and he scratched and whimpered. [...] Until his scratches just sounded like... rats in the wall. He felt small. So small. But that was his dream. And when he woke up, he was tall. So tall." by Trish Park. When he was young, his father Jacob Hill sent him to a mental institution as he was "clinically insane" and there William met the love of his life, Poppy Hill. - Poppy Hill : The young woman dressed as in the 1920s with burnt orange hair. Ms. Dudley explained that Poppy was clinically insane. - The boy in the wheelchair : He banged on the walls. He's the son of William and Poppy Hill. "I once dreamed his legs stopped working. They just... stopped one day. [...] And he couldn't speak, and then he couldn't do anything but cry. Cry and bang on the walls. Bang on the walls for help. [...] And he couldn't even see." by Poppy Hill. - Hazel Hill : The old woman on the sick bed. William Hill's sister. We see her reflection in the brass speaking tube, calling Clara who took care of her while she was alive during her illness. During the night of the big storm, she says not to trust Poppy Hill, calling her a liar. - The Clock-repairman : Hugh Crain tells his eldest son that Steven once saw a ghost like the clock repairman. The clock that was being repaired according to his book hadn't been repaired in years. Hugh had never hired anyone to fix it. - The dogs : "After Hazel's father died, she shot his dogs in the middle of the night." - The Dudleys' stillborn baby : While Horace and Clara Dudley were both working at Hill House, Clara became pregnant, but had a stillborn. Afterwards, in the house after dark, she began to hear the cries of her stillborn child, and having nightmares. Horace also once heard this crying baby, and after that day, they both decided not to go to Hill House after dark.

Oh boy. I feel you guys, I do. This episode broke me. I cried my eyes out, mostly with Nell's speech. The 'I loved you completely and you loved me the same' for some reason gets to me every single time. Because in the end, love is all that matters. Nellie was the purest soul and yet she was the one who suffered the most and had no one to save her at the end yet she saved everyone. If that's not love I don't know what love is then. Hugh's 'You and your sisters and your brother are my biggest pride' (or something along those lines) also made me bowl. Something about the father-child thing there hit home. This show was fire. I really hope they won't blow it with season 2.

That final scene with Nell talking to them all in the red room gets me everytime and the part when they show Hue with Olivia and Nell does as well and yes even the part where the Dudleys are in the house now with the wife and her two kids as well. That music is amazing as well and makes it even more sad. Such a wonderful show Mike is a master of horror and emotional minipulation and I respect him for it.

It’s okay Nikki! I lost it several times this episode just like you. They are really good at getting you right in the feels. This show was the best season of TV I watched in 2018. I’m so glad you guys gave it a chance, you and SithFurion are my fav reactors of this show. Nikki was right that the house convinced Olivia that the only way to keep her kids safe was to “wake them up” aka kill them but by trying to kill them she caused them to be messed up in the ways she didn’t want. A Catch 22 if you will. And Steve hit it on the head that Nellie had no one to save her but she saved everyone. Her and Luke are ❤️❤️ and the Dads last line gets me everytime. There’s so much to say but I’m so glad you guys enjoyed!!

What I love about this show is the expectations that you had from episode 1, just get blown away when you finish the last episode. You think you're just watching a typical scary show, but by the end you learn a lot of lessons about life, death, grief, guilt, anger, depression, forgiveness, relationships, addiction, and acceptance.
@Evija3000 Жыл бұрын
I think most things in the story are both real within the story, and also symbolic for the watcher. Like Theo's powers are real within the story, but for the viewers they're more symbolic of being an empath or even just generally trying to balance how much you get involved with the outside world and let it affect you vs how much you close yourself up for your own peace of mind. Similar with Luke's addiction. For Luke the top hat guy is the literal reason for his addiction while for the viewer he could be symbolic for addiction and the way it always follows you and creeps up in the especially stressful moments.
