The whole waking up thing is like, by "waking up" she means dying, she's basically saying that the real world is a horrible nightmare and if the kids were sent out there then they would suffer and the only way to stop it was to kill them (wake them up), that way their spirits are trapped in the house where they wouldn't have to suffer in the real world

Basically the House was messing with Olivia's mind, her sense of reality, her sense of self... And those visions of Nell and Luke was just that - The House messing with Liv. The saddest part of it all is that by trying to poison her children, Olivia inadvertently made those visions happen later in the future.

My reading of the first scene where Olivia thinks she's holding Luke when he's actually in Hugh's arms... is that Olivia got lost in time, which is something that happens in the house. It has a strange effect on their perception of time. Luke was in her arm, but at some point, Hugh picked him up to take him to bed. Because Olivia was getting lost in a moment of appreciating her children while they're still young and "safe" in her arms, she didn't notice that Hugh had already picked him up and started carrying him away. When she realizes it, it becomes a moment of her fear coming true, which is her children being taken away from her before she has a chance to even fully appreciate having them in her arms. Before she even realizes they're already gone. The house played a trick on her, playing on her fears of losing her children. This is the first instance of it happening. A small moment, but it's the spark of her psychosis. A fire that the house stokes more and more until it claims her.

I would just like to point something out, Olivia stopped Luke from burning down the house. One more thing, Poppy is the ONLY ghost actively trying to manipulate the Crain family. The rest of the ghosts are there, but they're not really trying to hurt them. Poppy is actively telling Olivia that the kids are dreaming and need to be woken up. She's actively making Olivia insane, just like her.

It has been confirmed that the children all represent the 5 stages of grief (grief over their mother). Steven is denial, Shirley is anger, Theo is bargaining, Luke is depression and Nell is acceptance. When the director and writre confirmed this theory you started to se the kids in a new light.

Hugh tells Luke that the Olivia he sees is made up from his head, so I don't think it's actually Olivia's ghost. I think it's just his coping method to deal with her loss. Kind of goes with the theme of how some ghosts are real, some we create, some are our choices and struggles, etc.
@turkeymcduckin7909
@turkeymcduckin7909 5 жыл бұрын
That's true, because the way we see her "ghost" hanging over Hugh is how she was in life. When we see her near the children, she looks haunted, as does Nell when she interacts with her siblings. We know multiple people have seen their ghosts in that form (Hugh and Theo both saw the mom in ep 8). So up to this episode, it's fair to assume that's her actual ghost, rather than how we see her with Hugh, following him around.
@crystalrose_pa

@@turkeymcduckin7909 Yeah the only time I'm not 100% sure about is when Nell sees her at the wedding. I think that's actually Olivia's ghost because if it was in Hugh's mind, Nell wouldn't be able to see her. Maybe Olivia was watching Nell and her siblings seeing them happy and thinking that maybe Poppy was wrong after all, maybe the world wouldn't destroy them - and that's why she didn't look all haunted because she was at peace seeing them happy. But then Nell's husband died and she tried drawing her back to the house again almost like, "See? I knew it! I knew the world would be cruel to her!"

I'm very late but I wanna add on. Hugh's main character trait is his need to "fix" things and this is shown in all the characters. Olivia included. They all at some point wanna to fix something they did or a relationship they were involved in (familial or romantical) but back to Hugh. He didn't properly acknowledge Olivia needed help (in his defense neither did she, they didn't have very good communication) so he tried lowering Liv's problems to something "easy" that he can fix. The problem is she was mentally ill and it was made worse over time until obviously it was too late. He never realized how ill she was until she was gone. It's obvious that as an elder the now understood that she did need help and how the house made her mental state worse due to the paranormal activity within it. Only as stated in his episode it was too late. Even as he was holding her dead body he unrealistically claimed he can "fix this" [fix her] this is clearly a sign of shock but he said it for a reason.

I was surprised you guys didn't react to that more than you did and assume you didn't realize that? Besides seeing a dead child on the ground and his own kids about to drink rat poison, he also saw all the ghosts when he was running down the hallway with the twins. Yes it's awful that Olivia got left behind in that evil house full of ghosts playing with her mind. But I feel for Hugh because he has witnessed his wife gradually going out her mind, he doesn't know why because up to that point he's not seen any ghosts just her odd behaviour and some strange occurrences in the house not enough to convince him, so he doesn't know that she has seen them or that they are speaking to her. He just sees his wife trying to murder their youngest kids with poison and is successful in killing one child who he doesn't even know and so saves the others, he pushed her into the wall but I don't think he meant to hurt her he was just trying to stop her and escape with the kids to safety, he had no idea that she was that far gone enough to commit suicide he went back to the house for her most likely to find out what's going on with her and get her help because now he knows she's not right in the head but doesn't know it's the house causing it.

You gotta remember that the audience is granted a perspective that the characters aren't always privy to. We can see what's going on with her but he doesn't have that information. He undoubtedly loves her immensely but she is a threat to their children, she tried to kill them and earlier looked like she was going to kill him too. He doesn't know why, he doesn't stop to think why, only that he needs to protect them. As a mum myself my duty is to my kid, to keep her safe, I would do the same in his position as much as it pained me.

If my spouse was trying to poison my children and there was a little girl who already died because my spouse killed them, I would take my children and get them to safety too. The kids were his number one priority and I would hope people do that even if their spouse is sick because that's a horrifying sight to walk in on. Also, Olivia has been losing it for a while, she held a screwdriver to Hugh's throat so he rightfully panicked and got them out of there ASAP. Poor Nell and Luke though, their mother tried to kill them and they watched Abigail die so no wonder why they're the most screwed up of the kids. I really feel for Olivia though, the house and Poppy made her think she had to kill her kids to keep them there forever.

6:09 The Director explains this scene by saying .. "To steal from Stephen King, we talked about how the characters 'shine' and that Olivia, being sensitive, as she puts it, kind of having a type of emotionality that is supernatural in the way she processes it, that she would have passed that down to her daughters, and that each of them would have gotten a splinter of that from her, if she was the prism of it. Theo gets the touch and Shirley has the dream sleep and the intuition and Nell is able to look across time." Olivia has the power to see across time - which she passed to Nell.

Hugh did the most sensible thing: Get the kids out of danger. Top priority. Then go back and see if he can help his wife. Anything else would have been insane. She already almost killed him in his sleep, she killed Abigail and it was sheer luck Luke and Nell were still alive. Hugh had to get the kids out first, he couldn't possibly know what was going on in Olivias's head. To him she was a murderess who was after his kids.

Well honestly it wasn't really Poppy manipulating Olivia, rather it was the house working through Poppy. Poppy met her husband in an asylum. She was already unstable. So, we could probably assume that the house distorted her view of reality the same way. She lost her daughter to pneumonia, and her son to polio(Wheelchair ghost that was banging on Theo and Shirley's walls). This probably sent Poppy over the edge and also why she is drawn to the twins. The house convinced Poppy that life is just a dream, and so Poppy truly believes she is helping Olivia. (in ep.10 it kind of hints that life really is a dream and that we can't understand it because we are existing within that dream until we "wake up", although it never outright says it).

You can also appreciate why Luke turned to drugs now. Having his childhood friend killed by his mom while everyone else dismisses her as imaginary... big boys know what's real and what's make-believe...

remember we get to see things from olivias perspective in the run up to all this. i'm guessing his first instinct was to protect his kids from the imediate danger (aka olivia trying to kill his children after having already killed one) so its not about leaving her and more about removing and protecting the kids.

The house messed with all of them. The game room, the reading room, the treehouse, the dance room, and the living room were all in one location. The Red Room. The house is a living entity. My guess is the home’s builder, Mr. Hill, is the entity that’s making the house live. He went mad and walled himself into the house. Along with his psycho wife, Poppy, and the only good ghost, Hazel, the house is a nesting ground for ghosts.

First time comment-er here! I started watching you guys about a month or so ago after I watched Hill House and checked out your reactions to it. This was my favorite show of 2018 and you two have great reactions (and great editing!) and seem like awesome people. I've since binged all of your GoT, Westworld, and Breaking Bad videos since those are some of my favorite shows too. Watching your GoT videos was the closest thing that I've come to that feeling of experiencing it again for the first time. Now I'll have to check out some of the other shows that you react to since you seem to have great taste!

Two sane parents should agree that kids are priority. Maybe if he was alone he would've stayed and help her but unfortunately the kids were there and Hugh seeing her try to poison their children and then seeing ghosts he just probably thought that whatever he could do he would do it after their kids were safe not before. He could live with that more that losing his kids because of it.

21:10 Yeah, it's true they did leave her behind. But when you think about it, Olivia saying "You guys go on without me" and the husband replies "How could we?", none of them fully recovered from her death so, in a way, they couldn't go on without her.

I didn't think about it till now, but this series is crazy identical to Stephen king's Rose red. I did some research and they influenced each other alot, but I didn't get the reference till the mom said something about "raining rocks". The girl in rose red caused rocks to rain down multiple times in the miniseries. Plus the room and items being red in hill house did it for me too. The oldest brother reminded me of Steven from rose red too. They were both skeptical of the supernatural until situations caused them to remember repressed memories of supernatural events. They even share the same first name. Just a thought

Hugh admitted to Steve in previous episode that he shouldn't have left Olivia alone in the house. But he had just seen a bunch of ghosts and his wife seemingly possessed trying to murder the twins, so it's understandable why his priority was to get the kids to safety first, then go back for her.

Hugh had the kids safety in mind before anything else and rightfully so. I would hope any parent would do the same after witnessing their partner kill one kid and try poisoning their other two. Putting Olivia in the same car with the kids right after what just happened would've been a very foolish move.

So here’s an experience of mine. Years ago, I was working security in Carmel, Indiana. I was in training, and the officer who was training me took me to one of the buildings assigned to our route. This was in the middle of the day mind you. So my training officer and I went through the empty building and did our required door pulls. (You try to open each door, in order to make sure that it’s secure). The building is two stories. Once we had completed our task, we went down to the main lobby. At this point my supervisor/training officer stopped me and advised me to wait and shut the fuck up. So we did. And not a minute later I heard the door handles checking themselves. In the perfect sequence of someone doing routine door pulls. I looked at him and he kinda shrugged and said, “Take from that what you will.”

The “House” uses a concept like a “vision” for the characters, feeding on their terror until it brings about the events it predicted for them. America is built on a lot of cursed land full of pain and terror and violence - and spirits easily embody that past and bring it about as hauntings. My personal opinion of the show😁😁

You wouldnt want to put unstable suicidal mother with the children in the same car too ;) he came back for her when kids are safe. Also waking up, when Nel hangs, mother says "time to wake up".. uh, powerful stuff.. Abygail takes the hand of her grandma probably, guessing from the story Abygails dad told to the dad that his mother died in the house . Such a crazy good ride

If only Hugh listened to Olivia when she was talking about her visions instead of telling her it’s all a bad dream then they wouldn’t have a problem. Also Mr.Dudley tried to warn him about getting Olivia out of the house but he did not listen until it’s too late. She tried telling him that there’s something wrong with her and he told her she was just exhausted because of the flip. Olivia was basically calling for help and he was just like “it’s all a bad dream”.

Nelly already said that she thought time was a point after another, a succession of moments but when she died she realized that it isn't, that's how she was thebent neck lady since the begining and herself as a child at the same time. That's how olivia could see the "future" because time it's not a line or at least not in that house. Sorry for my english tho

Kinda glad the comment section is pointing out why Hugh very obviously did the right thing by leaving Olivia behind. At that point she was a danger to everyone, tried killing 2 of their own children and DID kill another child. Why on EARTH would he take her with in the same car as he put the children? Sick or not, that's so obviously the right thing to do here, and frankly, I think Olivia herself when she was still sane would have agreed with her husband's decision.

I was very confused about that episode too! It was hard for me to understand what was the hell happened after she poisoned Gabrielle. I was confused about Gabrielle being an "imaginary friend" of Luke's. I didn't understand if she was a ghost or a real person!. Tbh, I would do exact same when the father grabbed the kids out of the house immediately after the wife tried to "wake them up". Oh hell no, the kids' safety come first!

The correct answer would have been for all of them to go to Aunt Janet’s. The kids are having screaming meemies, the wife is “scattered”, the house is not getting fixed anytime soon. They all could have used a break from there. That scene with Poppy and then the kids foretelling their futures was one of my favorite scenes in how chilling this show was. No jump scares, just pure tension with words.

18:52 His wife is trying to kill their children. 21:34 Time doesn't work "right" in that damned house. I don't quite remember what I felt or thought going into the finale. But I remember feeling the Craines had one vital advantage--they had each other, no longer as children. And they were going into the house having had some breakthroughs with each other, which made them stronger.

do you guys think that maybe Poppy put it in her head that she's "just dreaming" and has to "wake up"? like maybe her first interaction we see with her in this episode wasn't the Actual first time which is maybe why she's not as freaked out by poppy standing over Hugh in the bedroom? just a thought because of how many times poppy mentions that it's all a dream?
