@@willbeplayin Yeah, the first few episodes are character driven horror, then the middle episodes are straight up tragedy. Then, somehow, they merge all of that together through some kind of Lovecraftian alchemy, and the last couple of episodes are horrifying, heartbreaking and enthralling all at the same time. It's really quite special. - The Hound.

“Engrossing” is the perfect word to describe this show. Great reaction and adorable kitty! For a child to go through trauma, I know it sounds implausible, but adulthood can literally cause you to question what actually happened. I think about the Chronicles of Narnia series, when, in the last book, one of the original characters dismisses the experiences of her childhood as “pretending.” Or, for a real-world example, I can vividly recall playing on the front lawn of my childhood home. I was only four or five, having a teddy bear picnic, when an older girl came riding by on her bike. She asked me if I would go with her to deliver mail to a house down the street. Thinking she was so cool, I went with her. At the end of the street were some trees lining the parkway. One, in particular, was missing a large portion of bark. The older girl grabbed me by the back of the neck and slammed my head into that tree trunk two times. I ran home, crying, and my mom comforted me, telling me that strangers were “red lights” and meant the same thing: stop, don’t go with them. She said that even older kids could be strangers, “yellow lights”: slow down, be careful. Years later, I referenced that conversation, as an adult. My mom couldn’t remember any part of my story, and she insisted that it must have been a dream I had. The whole thing. And, after hearing that over and over, it definitely causes me to question my own memory.

Rhaegar the kitty says thanks! And all three of us are glad you’re enjoying our content! And wow, that is... woah. To have such a vivid memory, and then have no one else believe you. I can see why that would make you question things. Just goes to show what we’ve been saying all along is right. People need to have more belief in their kids. I hope you get answers one day, one way or the other. - The Hound.

One thing no one ever seems to pick up on with Steven is that he is CONSTANDLY dealing with the idea that his entire family is mentaly ill and they're going to kill themselves one by one And when he's seemingly calling his sibling and dad out for potentially being mentaly ill he's also dealing with the fact he thinks he's menatly ill himself , he's just too scared to really say it out loud Then there's also all the stuff going on between him and his wife which is also caused by this fear of his And he is just REALLY bad at dealing with all of that in a healthy, constructive way so he lashes out and says stuff he regrets Thats also why he denies all his ghost encounters and doenst tell anyone about them, cuz doing so would, in his mind, make him admit that he is going insane And sure, for us the audience its easy to say he should just finally accept that ghosts are real, but if we imagine this to be a real life situation, it would be a bit much to expect someone to just accept ghosts are real instead of believing in a plausible, scientific explanation I know he's abrasive a lot fo the time, but i really like and appreciate Steven because to me, he is the most realistic and relatiable person in this show Also i often agree with WHAT he is saying, just not HOW he is saying it Of course this is also just my take on it X'D
@TheDragonTheHound
@TheDragonTheHound 3 жыл бұрын
You make some pretty solid points, can’t deny that! I think Steven’s biggest problem is that he’s basically living in denial. Almost all his problems stem from this fact. His denial and fear lead him to get a little prickly, and that makes him hard to like. But, as you’ve said, a lot of that is easy for us to say, because we KNOW that the ghosts and stuff are real, and that he’s just in denial. I have a deep suspicion, that a lot of people, myself included, would be far more like Steve or Shirley if they were in this situation than they’d like to admit. - The Hound.

re: Stephen - denial is a hell of a drug but I am with you both: I absolutely love child Stephen, he's such a sweetheart. this episode is absolutely heart-wrenching and beautiful all at the same time. as for the coffin, that was absolutely Nellie knocking it over telling her family to shut the hell up and pay attention to her already; she wanted them to see her. hearing baby Nellie and baby Luke's voice-overs at the end of this episode always completely breaks me, no matter how many times I've seen it. oh and btw, congrats on hitting 1k! here's to 1k more! @@TheDragonTheHound apparently at the end of filming they had issues with their rigging, so they couldn't do too many takes and in the end they had to use shots that had some mistakes in them. If I remember it right, Theo falling off the couch was one of those mistakes, but the cast were so drilled in never going out of character by that point that everyone just reacted accordingly and in the end it fit the scene so well they used it.

There's a video on KZbin about the behind-the-scenes endeavour to do the seventeen-minute single-shot that opens the episode, and it's amazing that they pulled it off, especially as they had to keep bringing other characters in and out of the past without cutting, and that they had to connect the funeral parlour set to the Hill House set so that they could get Dad to walk between the two. Amazing direction, crew-co-ordination and performances from all concerned.

First, congrats on the 1k subs. I think we are all enjoying the emotional ride you are taking on The Haunting of Hill House so far. I especially loved your reactions and comments on this one. It does leave most speechless. This episode remains my favourite. From a story-telling perspective, the technical aspects of the shoot, acting - all of it is just so amazing. The end of Two Storms crushed me. The symbolism of nobody being able to see Nelly during each of the two storms drew a parallel to all those times that Nelly was weathering her own personal storms alone, and feeling like nobody was listening. The last line young Nelly delivers, "nobody could see me", changes slightly in tone and delivery from the rest of her lines. She now sounds defeated, like she realizes that all her calls for help were for not. Three more to go. Brace yourself for some scares and keep the tissues to wipe the tears handy as well.

And yeah, while I love pretty much every episode of this show, Two Storms is absolutely in the top three, for me. It excells on just about every level, and as you said, Nellie's delivery of her final lines is just soul destroying. And when it's taken in the context of everything she's been through so far this season, it just makes it hurt all the more. And yeah, three more episodes to go, and somehow, they keep getting finding new and amazing ways to hurt us. Wonderful... - The Hound.

I consider myself a hard man, but here I cried in the end. So heartbreaking when a little girl says she's there all the time and nobody sees her. Whenever the family quarrels, Nelly intervenes. She just tries to make herself noticeable but nobody sees her. It's so deeply sad. I have to point out these excellent child actors again. How rarely is it cast so well. How often do children get on my nerves in films and series because they are simply not good actors. The last good child actor was in walking dead as Judith and before that there was nothing until the sixth sence. Wow just wow In the whole episode there were only 4 or 5 cuts. That's another number on top of everyone involved in the series.

Yeah, the young Crains are SO GOOD. There’s one scene, in an upcoming episode, that absolutely floored me. With young Nel. And the final scene of this episode has to rank right up there, with my saddest scenes of all time. Utterly heartbreaking. And when you notice the pattern, of Nel always trying to intervene, when her family is arguing... it just makes it, and some scenes to come, all the sadder. - The Hound.

@@TheDragonTheHound You expressed concern at the end of the video that you might end up being left confused. I can assure you that every little thing will make sense. Not just the big things. Even individual mini-dialogues and the tiniest of clues add up to the whole picture. So if the show left you confused with the last episode, then you've just missed out on things. Maybe not looking or listening at the right moment. For that reason alone, a second look would be absolutely worth it. Then everything will come together at the latest. You also responded to the fact that people criticized you for talking too much and listening too little. I was one of them. But it wasn't a criticism, but a hint for your best possible experience, not for me as a viewer. Because it's very easy to miss a lot of supposed little things that would later be important. A second round is also worthwhile, because then you can also turn off the fear and see everything more clearly. For that reason alone, it is worthwhile. For me personally, this video had the best balance between showing the episode and your comments on it. Was very pleasant to look at. It was fun. Also cut and edited very well. 👍

Olivia and Nelly are The Two Storms, the two catalysts of this story that is why the family is reliving this grief. But at the same time this explains a lot. Nelly was able to move through time and space, so could Olivia (the mom) both were lost in one of the storms and both are dead now. Except Nelly didn't kill herself maybe one was the catalyst and the other the hero and the one to bring healing to the family. Shirley said that Nell was the one that always wanted to get them all together, i feel like that is her mission while the mother separated them through grief Nell is uniting them.. The Two Storms.... I think that Mike Flanagan has a good idea of what true horror is. The horrors of what happens to us in real life and a lil subtle jumps scares within his storytelling is remarkable. That is like his own personal brand. God.... This whole episode was so sad. I couldn't stop crying, especially towards the end.. "I was right here nobody could see me". But seeing baby Nell in that casket was too much for me.

I actually don’t dislike Steve. I think he is does genuinely try to help his family and does support all them in one way or another (either through money or how he supports Luke) He makes mistakes, but often his view of what happened on that night and how he is continuously left out of the conversation and not told anything. And people having the same hallucinations is an actual phenomenon, although not working in the way you’d think. (Mostly a dominate person gives other people predisposed to hallucinations the idea of a hallucination that they themselves are hallucinating, thus they think that they are seeing the same things), so chocking it up to mental illness is not far fetched. When you think about it, if you didn’t personally have those experiences and were a limited amount of information about like, Steven was told, it is easy to think of this phenomenon to be due to mental health. I also think Steven’s anger towards his father makes sense in his position bc to Steven, his father could very well have murdered his mother and created a bunch of these other stories. I think this family has so much baggage, hurt, and trauma that cause them to have so much conflict as they have t actually healed or come to terms with their mother’s or Nelly’s death.

Yeah, I think we might be a LITTLE mean to Steve. But he just makes it so easy... I do think, given how little he knows about that last night, and how little the father communicates, that you can’t totally blame his line. My only problem with him, is that even when he’s presented with evidence that the rest of the family might be right, he still doesn’t believe. Of course, if that were to change... - The Hound.

Notice how they all want to "fix" things? Nell wants to fix Luke and his addiction and fix her life and her depression. Luke wants a "fix" for himself but then goes to rehab to fix himself. Theo is a psychiatrist trying to fix children and their conditions. Shirel (or however it's spelled lol) wants to fix the dead, to make them look good for their grieving families. Even Steve wants so desperately to fix his family and their mental illness. Of course the Dad is a handyman fixing homes. And the mother is as well. She also wants to fix the dangerous world her children live in.

it seems scripted since she has following lines that need her falling to make sense (and Luke and Kevin trying to help her up), I mean how was she supposed to follow with the "don't touch me" if she wasn't supposed to fall?

When you are scared of something you may intentionally say it was something else so that you can handle it and gain some control. Steve is very much that way. He let Neli down do he blames others. He can't do anything against ghost so he says it is mental illness. He wants to make sure ghost are not real so he investigates ghost sightings so he can continue to not find a ghost there for making him believe even more so that it is all mental illness. If is was mental illness then he can pretend he is starting to o brake and that is how he saw his dead sister.
