When Steve screamed to his father "the wrong parent died!! " it was the last straw for Nell he went too far and she had to manifest herself in one way or another to make them stop. That's how i took it anyway. This whole thing is so tragic.

funny, I actually found the "one take" gimmicky and the acting to show its weaknesses with the forced long takes. strange how we all see things in different ways.
@kaneinight
@kaneinight 6 жыл бұрын
@@alienanxiety Something is only a gimmick when it's overused. One-takes are rarely done because most filmmakers and actors aren't skilled enough to pull them off effectively. Here it was used appropriately and executed brilliantly, which is no surprise considering Mike Flanagan is a brilliant filmmaker.
@alienanxiety
@alienanxiety 6 жыл бұрын
kaneinight I can understand people liking it, but the fact that Steven and Nikki kept stopping to point out "this is still the same shot" proves that the director has broken the dramatic connection with the audience and drawn attention to the craft. It's cool, but I just happen to think the best direction is unseen direction. It's all subjective though.

@@alienanxiety The fact they kept asking themselves "is this still one shot" proves you wrong. They knew there was something unusual about this episode, they suspected it was the long takes, but because they were into the story so much they weren't actually sure if they were right. I was the same the first time I watched it. I kept catching myself thinking "wait, there was no cut yet, was there? Did I miss it?" I think it's a really clever way to put emphasis on the relationships between characters, so much so, it's almost like being at a stage theatre. We get to see them almost "live" just being with each other, talking to each other and being present the whole time, even out of shot, instead of only when the director chooses for them to be there. I think it was a brilliant stylistic and narrative choice for this episode, considering it was all about their family relations. Also, you should really watch the BTS for this episode. It's amazing how much work went into pulling this off.

"I was here the whole time. I was screaming and nobody could see me." I feel that this is a metaphor, not only for Nell, but for all of them. They are so busy dealing with their own trauma, that none of them seem to see each other. I feel this show is a great catalyst for families and friends to hold serious discussions of mental illness as well. This family is dealing with "actual" ghosts, but everybody has ghosts in their past. And as a society, we need to listen more. Be there for the people we love. Be there for each other without stigma and judgement...
@eianfederle2715
@eianfederle2715 4 жыл бұрын
Well I think the main point of the show is whether the stuff everyone's seeing is either the result of mental illness or actual ghosts. There were many points in the show that leads to mental illness, but at the same time, there were also many points in the show that point to the stuff being paranormal.

Regarding Nikki's comment about the statues, the showrunner revealed that the Hill House set was designed to make the viewer feel as thought THEY were being watched by Hill House. I'm not talking about all the ghosts that appear in the shadows and the backgrounds of numerous shots, he meant the actual design of the set. The placement of windows, statues, light/lamps, furniture, everything was meticulously placed and designed to intentionally put you on edge.
@Evija3000
@Evija3000 3 жыл бұрын
Really interesting, makes me wonder how they did it. The statues definitely made me uneasy even simply for being life-sized, sometimes with focus shifting to them. Hmm, I guess none of the beds were by the wall, which means danger could approach from multiple sides (like the face in the first episode behind Nell). When they gathered during the storm it was in the middle of a room as well and on top of that the room had like 8 exits, which also doesn't make you feel safe at all. Same when Nell slept on the couch after her "bad dream". I'll keep looking for other examples.

Luke is my favorite Crain sibling because it seems like beyond his drug addiction, he’s an incredibly loving person who will do anything for the people he cares about. His addiction made him selfish and do bad things but we see his personality since he’s been sober for 90 days. He’s brave for facing his fears and that ending scene breaks my heart. As you can see by the other comments, this episode is highly favored because of its direction. The long shots are my favorite because it’s like a stage show. If you notice there were small moments of imperfections that the actors stayed in character. Theo falling was one and young Hugh stepping over a flashlight or a part of the chandelier was another. People also stumbled over some of their lines but it was kept in because it was more authentic. I really want to applaud the child actors because their scenes were long shots as well and they were so well behaved and stayed in character too. I think the kids need more credit in this show because they really bring it home for me.

Ok, probably a bit late commenting, but I do need to pass my thoughts on for consideration as Im pretty impressed with this whole show and Ep 6 in particular. 1) the entire interior set of Hill House and the Harris funeral home was built conjoined, before filming of even the first episode started, just so Mike Flanagan could get one single transition shot in one single episode. 2) the entire conjoined set was a maze of hidden passages and hidey holes so cast and crew could move around unseen when off camera. 3) yes, they built an elevator so the cameraman could do a smooth transition between the two storeys, and then the crew had to hide the rig and themselves in about ten seconds before the camera swung back. 4) they halted filming for a month, rehearsed twice a day six days a week, with fifteen cast and thirty crew, before turning a single reel. 5) the only CGI used was the shattering windows, and that was for safety. 6) there were no hidden cuts, the only cuts were the ones we see. 7) these technical achievements are vastly impressive old-school film making at its best. And yet, overriding all this effort and rehearsal and intense work, the one thing everyone will remember is the final static shot of Nell standing beside her casket and saying “None of you could see me. No-one could see me.” Seriously, this script was cruel.

Spot on Steven, think there was a total of 4 shots, only editing is connecting the shots together. There are articles where the director speaks about how they achieved it, basically months of planning/rehearsing etc. Think the longest 1shot is 17 minutes, anyone fluffs their lines and they all have to start again. Its an amazing achievement especially for the child actors. There were some mistakes/improvisations that they kept going and it just added to the intensity, like the touch lady falling off the sofa edge.

This episode is amazing, so many emotions playing out and it's beautiful done, but so heartbreaking and everytime we the viewer finds out another puzzle piece to the bigger picture just draws us in more deeply to this expertly crafted series. I hope they win all the things for this!

Hill House: Everyone is broken and awful to each other The ending of this one ruined me. Baby Nell and Luke just hit me every time. "I'll never let you go again, I promise" Ugh 😓😭

I counted 4 cuts in this episodes, making 5 long shots, which is amazing. the first is a smooth fade done digitally in the hallway between houses. the second was the chandelier crashing, and the other two were carefully hidden inbetween lightning strikes and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cut. Amazing cinematography.

That was the BEST episode and yes, the storms were only one shot. There's actually a video on KZbin where they break it down. Love your videos already excited for the next one.

I love this episode. It was such a good episode, i feel like I'm not supposed to be watching them fight with each other during that one scene where they bring up their issues with each other.

Such an amazing episode and more amazing performances by each of the actors as the adult and younger versions played off each other. Way to point out that magnificent single shot, Steven. It was filmed beautifully. Amazing reactions too!! 😉👍🏼👍🏼

this is not related to the show, and I'm sure you guys have heard lots of things like this from other subscribers, but thank you for your channel. I have lived alone away from my home country and moved from one place to another for the last 10 years. Today things were a bit tough, but when I got into the empty house, my first thought was 'Let's turn on youtube to watch nikki and steven's reactions', and that thought just calmed me down. And I have watched most of them, so I'm just rewatching and rewatching and yes, rewatching them over and over again. There's something really heart-warming about your videos, just with your interactions and reactions. I'm not usually a commenter, but please know that I am incredibly grateful for your channel.

This episode was the hardest for them to film and yes you are right it's full of one shots that they had to time very carefully to be able to get to the next scene and keep the shot with no mistakes as well. If you noticed though when the mother Olivia is walking down the hall the staues are looking at her and that too was hard to do because they had to switch the staues very quickly before the camera went back to the hallway and the staues were standing as they had been before.

not sure this is a show we'd want to watch more than one a week... it's is so good and is super deep, feels more rewarding this show after letting an episode sink in for a week.
