This olivia (blue dress) was a version of olivia before the craines came to Hill House, Hugh's memories and impression of Liv before it was corrupted by the house. But the ghost that Steve had been seeing, and Theo also saw, that's actually what Olivia had became at the end of her life, a version that Hugh continuously tried to hide from the kids for reasons come on later episodes

Also, good catch Nikki on the lady ghost in the cellar! Most people don’t see her. I’m pretty sure most of the ghosts are chained to specific rooms. Steve’s room has a young man in a tux, I think? The room where Nell’s name was drawn seems to have a child in it if you watch the tables and chairs. I think there’s a guy in the kitchen. This is not spoilers, just a theory; I think the stronger a spirit is, the more they can wander the grounds.

I love how each episode makes you feel more and more for each character. I didn’t really like Hugh that much because I thought it was cruel and irresponsible that he didn’t talk to his children and level with them about what happened to their mother, it’s a major reason why the three older kids, especially Steven gives him such a hard time. Olivia said “your silence doesn’t protect them” and it’s true. But he just wanted to fix everything. His obsession with fixing the house really did a number on his family, it was like one problem after another. That speech by Mr. Dudley was so good, I’m glad they stuck with that single shot on his face. It makes it much more poignant. It did a good job of explaining the lore of the house. Hill House isn’t just another haunted house that wants people to leave, it seems like it wants people to stay. I always figured that Olivia was in Hugh’s head. He’s a widower so I think that’s pretty normal. I just wanna point out that the other kids see Olivia as whole but remember when young Theo touched her in episode three? Hugh also went back to the house later that night so the head was split for a reason. Hugh and Theo saw some wild shit that the others didn’t see.

These are also special circumstances, I don't know if it would change much but at least their dad would have communicated with them. I can't imagine that happening and people telling stories about your family and your dad staying silent through all of it after 26 years.

@@Dularr Dude. This was a very special circumstance. He knew that his kids were seeing things, I have a feeling they would have understood. Like Luke said when they were looking at Nell's body, she didn't do that to herself and neither did their mother. I'm not saying go through the gritty details but he had 26 years to at least bring up a conversation and his kids experienced extraordinary occurrences (Theo's gift). Shirley and Steve were old enough to be able to understand something. He gave them NOTHING in 26 years about their mother. He left them to come up with their own conclusions and deal with the aftermath and didn't even have a conversation with them about. I'm no therapist but if something happened to my mother, I would want at least something to placate me. That was 26 years worth of no communication. I don't see how you don't think that's a problem.

These last three episodes build so much, and i think you lose something in the momentum of the show when you wait a week between episodes. This show was designed to be binge watched. The last three episodes for sure; where as Breaking Bad was designed to be aired an episode a week. In the end Steve and Nikki will do what they do. I was just giving them a suggestion so as to maximize their viewing experience. That's all😎

If you were to rewatch the show when you’re done you will see ghosts all over the place in scenes. You saw the one in the basement but there were more. Example when the police where down there the cop in the back had one standing behind him. Always look around the main staircase and you will start to see the hidden ghosts.
